good idea strapping the stuff in your shop down before confirming the blower fan works .. i've heard the blower described as an asthmatic elf blowing through a straw

Personally, I kind of appreciate LR's puny low fan speed cos it means I can leave it running all the time rather than switching it off and then finding it's seized up when I try to switch it on again when the weather's cold.
I guess it means I'm wearing out the motor more quickly but, honestly, I've never had a fan fail in 20-odd years.
Conversely, I HAVE bought a couple of LRs and found the fan was seized when I first tried to run it.
Hence, running it all the time seems like the best option.

I'm been design and producing heat exchangers for 20 years.. the most important thing is the air go through the heat exchanger not around it to do not loose efficiency.

That’s how these units control temperature - in the strip down video, you see Mike free up the flap which is hinged at the inboard edge of the matrix and has its moving edge near the inlet from the blower. When you select fully hot on the lever, the flap should move across the front of the housing to expose the matrix and block the bypass, forcing all air through the matrix. When you select cold, the flap moves flat across the front of the matrix and allows all the air to bypass it for maximum ventilation. It’s a big improvement over the SIII unit that had a similar matrix and fan, with the temperature controlled by a valve that restricted the engine coolant flow through the wet side of the matrix, so the airflow was always impeded by the drag from the matrix even when selected to cold. The valves also tended to seize and pose a restriction (even in good condition) to the coolant, so they system never provided the heat the Defender type can.
@@nickboylen6873 the flap is to skip the heat exchanger.. the most important thing are the air seals back in place ... Some Defender never get really warm 😂
The heater itself is not an issue but getting coolant hot enough to transfer the heat - when I fitted the early type of heater to my 3.9 Isuzu, I removed the air control flap and had the matrix surrounded so no air could go round the sides, I also drew air from the footwell not out side of the vehicle - it gets so hot I cannot run it on the second speed once the engine is up to temperature BUT The Isuzu takes coolant from a different place on the engine ( just behind the thermostat) and that makes all the difference!
@@1977Timp, yep. When I rebuilt my 109, I used a Defender heater to improve its performance, but was careful to make sure all the seals for the distribution system were renewed and working, and filled all the small holes in that lower fascia duct. The old fascia and heater assembly were full of holes, mostly screw holes in the fascia from previous owners, but a fair few rust holes, and the plastic hose from blower to matrix (deleted on Defender) was split all over the place! The thing didn’t have a chance!

Mate if one looks inside the Squirrel Cage Fan you will see an arrow indicating direction of rotation. For some ungodly reason on all Defenders (TD5's and onwards) that I have worked on with the Blower plugged in and switched on from the Dash, and the heater NOT mounted so as to check the output, they have all gone backwards. Now the funny thing is when a Squirrel Cage Fan runs in reverse it uses less power because its almost running in a vacuum but the motor is not getting as much air flow so it can heat up more (the mounting plate is the heat sink as well as the L brackets and the outer casing onto the Fan housing). End result is I always have to switch the cable over by cutting and swapping them around and rejoin them back up correctly and cover in heat shrink. So even though you "tested" the heater from a battery, when connected to the wiring harness, don't be surprised that its still running in reverse (no airflow).

Wow what a heater!! I had an old Smith's in my ser2, the shin burner.. it would rattle and dim the headlights when it was on but couldn't even displace a small fart...
I wonder if there would be money in making plastic replacement heater boxes.. no more rust, designed by a human instead of by accident

funny I've just come in from taking mine fully to bits. every rivet out. Took the motor to bits :( brushes and com worn out, not even possible to just fit new brushes! That £120 i need to find. All the metal is going for blasting and will be painted and rebuilt. That motor is the same 'gate' as my original. Where did you get it from?
Have you ever found anything valuable in the heater casing when you have taken one apart. I found rather a nice diamond engagement ring in one once. I always wondered if some girl had thrown it back at their boy-friend and it went down the vent. Other than that it has been small change. Great video Mike. stay safe. Yorkshire Rob.

Type in 'self-adhesive foam sheet' into Amazon - lots of sizes and densities, and pretty cheap
Was that seal around the bottom of the matrix to stop air blowing past between the matrix and the housing into the engine bay? Not the three piece but the other one. Also closer fins increase pressure drop so the passengers will never feel a powerful blow of air. There pathetic to begin with anyways...
You could be correct on the seal but they made the matrix bigger to compensate for the tighter fins - they actually blow quite well - the restriction is the hole in the bulkhead and the outlets in the bottom dash

Depends on what heater box you have for a quiet life - the 300Tdi and Td5 have longer matrixes but have different pipe outlets - not easy to retro fit a long matrix into a 2.5 NA for example

I cant find a motor for my defender so i chisseld the small edges over that keep the blower motor cover on at the back its actualy very easy just tap them back i then removed the fover and saw that the amiture us below the brusshes of the motor i took off the hamster wheal luckely it came of easy not stuck as on my other motor so i removed the armiture replaced the clip that was loose i bent is close inserted it back on its correct spot cleaned and oiled the swiwel phosthor copper bearing checked that it sot iver the brusshes wich it did i replacd the cap again and tapred the metal back with an old air tool chissel sharpened ti easeiy tap rhe metal over again to hold the dovwr in place a plate over the top and bolted to the exsisting 3 fan to metal plate nolts will also work actualy well atleast my ran works again and blows a dog out of a bush its ont thing you havent done yet Sir strip a defender heater blower motor.
Well done! Those blower motors were used on many, many vehicles in the past - Minis, Jags, Land Rovers and others
They can run in any direction - you just swap the wires over
The wheels are handed, not the motor.
Getting the wheel off is the hard part, but once removed, I have salvaged them by soaking them in diesel, then let them dry out a bit, and turn the shaft with a drill as it is 99% of the time the bushes that dry out - once free apply 12 volts and I bet it will work again!
Prob been easier to buy a nice new defender at this rate 😊

@James Cunliffe look at the new defender it’s got so many ecu in it in ten years maybe 15 it will be scrap ! So yes buy a new one, one that can’t be fixed due to ageing soft ware and electrical components that will not be able available I love nothing more than repairing old machines like Mike does in fact I wish he would come and stay on our farm for a week check our workshops out play with our collection of Land Rover ! But really you need to learn sarcasm and sarcastic comments when you read them or don’t assume everyone is thick and has no mechanical skills may I ask what you do for a living ?
