Hey don't underestimate the moles from the dwelling, their worse than lizards Also enjoy getting insta killed in the cosmic ocean immediately when you spawn in
yeah instakills are very prevalent in the game. regarding moles i find them less dangerous on their own but when paired with other enemies or traps they are a big nuisance
One of the greatest things about the Spelunky series is that because you don't unlock anything, you're just as equipped on hour 1 as you are 1000, only your own growing skill is what dictates how a run will go.
yeah me and my friends have had stupid arguments about roguelikes vs roguelites saying that a big difference is that traditional roguelikes don't have stuff like unlocks. The only thing to rely on is your skill with spelunky which makes it feel much better when you succeed.
I have 40 hours in spelunky 2 and havent yet gotten past olmec... but this video makes me want to revisit spelunky 2. Very good video and you deserve more subs.
I beat the game at 100 hours on the dot, and the intro made me realise there is a whole other ending and secret world I didn’t know about. You never truely escape the grasp of spelunky 2
its so strange the amount of people that beat spelunky is often random, it took me 30 hours to beat spelunky 1 and 33 hours to beat the normal ending of spelunky 2, and at 66 i got the cosmic ocean, but the rest of my friends took from 50 to 150 hours to get to tiamat boss
Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are in my opinion some of the hardest and greatest games to have ever been made. Just the pure joy of learning how to improve over each run and discovering the nuances is the best.
The randomly generated messes that are the levels lend themselves to comically bullshit deaths but also insane clutch moments. Even after hundreds of hours in the game you can have a fresh experience that leaves you feeling exhilarated. Great video!
I appreciate the comparison to a rube goldberg machine, and I also liked how you emphasized that Spelunky is very much its own game. These are two points I agree with that I haven't seen anyone else mention in videos about Spelunky so props for that I guess
When I first watched this, I’d thought it was one of those channels with thousands of subscribers who are practically professionals at this kind of thing. You definitely deserve more subs!
Wow, just wow, the amount of effort put into such a video for a very small channel is impressive. You have a loooooooooot of potential man, also you earned my sub if it wasn't clear enough.
I developed a new term for this game: getting spelunkied means you get comboed to instant death by an enemy, a trap, something that blew up or all of the above
The game is difficult simply because almost every mistake or fumbled jump is an instant death for the player in a game with perma-death and procedurally generated levels. The game is crazy unforgiving for any mistake.
Im currently working towards my first CO win, 7-72 PR atm, and people that don't play this game just cannot understand how unbelievably hard it is. That is until you give them the controller and they cant clear dwelling after an hour of trying lol
I don't find them all that dangerous on their own cause they don't stun you or anything. they can be a big pain if paired or grouped up with other enemies though
The mole is quite dangerous due to how large of an area it covers. Pretty much every other enemy stops being a threat if you leave the room it's in... But moles are eternal. Unless you take time to kill them on sight, (which takes some time to wait out) you can get ambushed while dealing with other threats.
Spelunky 2 is great. The only issue I have with the game comes from cosmic ocean being too long that it’s just not too fun. I might just be malding because of my hitless cosmic deaths, but it’s just too long lol
At 3 minutes and you still haven't mentioned that if you stay in room was it 2.5 minutes giant ghost spawns which splits into more parts that work little differently after some time
Good review. As a Spelunky 2 player there's nothing I didn't know, though the video is well made. But from the title I was expecting something else, ie. an explanation of why Spelunky 2 seems difficult, but this is deceptive as it's actually not. Which would be a cool theory to try and prove. Eg. you expect such a responsive platformer to be played in a rushed or casual way, but if you take things slow, monitor your surroundings, and plan ahead, it's not as hard as it looks. There are lots of videos on why Spelunky 2 is hard, so seeing a video with counter points would be very unique, even if the video's final conclusion is that yes, it's actually still hard 😁
Yeah i spent a while trying to make the video feel unique from the other spelunky videos but I couldn't find a way of making it very interesting. This video is a very basic, general overview. Maybe someday Ill make a more in-depth video.
Spelunky was hard when I 1st played it when I was 4 years old, I'm lucky that I was able to get to cosmic ocean before 24 hours of playtime in the 2nd one because I had experience from the xbox 360
As someone with 2.8K hours, I can assure you that it gets better, and you can master your movement and your capacity to predict events, to be able to survive 99% of the situations only with skill Disclaimer: Im talking about pre co, you dont wanna get there :)
I mean the enemies/traps aren't hard to deal with on their own, but them combined can lead to you having to think, and the 3min timer ia rushing you so alot of the time you've going too fast to think through about the caveman's corpse getting yeeted into you Also after playing for a long time your brain is literally too lazy to think haha- is it just my first attempts that are better than usual- Also because of this most of the time it doesn't feel like it's your own fault for dying, since most of the time you're the one who's not careful enough...maybe because of the timer or just laziness idk Also a small nitpick about CO, I'm good enough at the game to get there consistently, but it's just not fun mate, like "Good job you beat the unique challenges of this game...now do it ten times over but with more insta kills and with no sense of direction, yay, I dunno it's just not fun, like at all ;-; Also yo essay with good editing from a small channel, Amazing, keep up the good work :p
While not a necessity by any means, I’d recommend you get a high refresh rate monitor because your computer can definitely run it at more than 100fps, and it feels a smooth
People starting Spelunky 2 : "Damn that game's so hard and unfair" Me who have 2300 hours : "I cannot understand why everyone is saying this game is hard"
I think a lot of this games difficulty is artificial, derek just made everything lead to a cavalcade of death, And by far the stupidest thing ever added was flowing water/lava. as all that did is add new ways to get softlocked. thanks Derek. but no thanks
Its super mario.. for ppl with gaming chairs. Im really fuggin good at games. Still, take your eyes or attention off spelunky 2 and you wont make it past the first world lmaooooo. Getting ruined is just skill
U real snoop dog
Being good at Spelunky is not mastering every possible situation. It's knowing when to say 'hell no' and run from it.
I feel like that's true to an extent but sometimes running away doesn't solve the situation and sometimes there is no option to run away.
