    I just bought one at Sam's for $160. It had a jacket, gloves, painted box, and queen excluder but no book or burlap.

    When I settle down and stops moving multiple times a year I get some hives. Think I build them myself. I belive I go for a insulated layens hive because I live in Norway and we got long and cold winters.

      A layens is on our list of hives to build and learn about! When we start filming that I hope you join us on our adventure!

      @@RascalApiary ye layens seems like a damn good concept. For me the biggest feature is that it's isolated once and done. You don't have to wrap it and unwrap it every year. Looks like it gives the bees good chances to survive a harsh vinter and that is what I need where I live. Also think I build a few layens swarmtraps. Would be cool to get local bees that most likely got good genetics to survive in my area. Also then it's free bees 😁

    Enjoyed the demo and have a question about frames. I bought this hive in April, it came with the plastic wax board. If I remove it will the bees build their comb without it? Will check for the j hook since I have trouble getting hold of full frames. My kit did not come with the gear and am glad now. I have small hands and we had already purchaed the smoker and bee suit so it worked out well. That kit you have there is almost $500 on Amazon.ca, you did get a very good deal!

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 роки тому +1

      So sorry for the late reply. UA-cam was hiding it from me. :) If you remove the plastic, the bees will still wax without it. You just have to inspect more often as they are drawing the comb to ensure it is straight and in the frames the way you want. Some people prefer the plastic. I would recommend keeping every other frame with the plastic initially. This will help the bees draw the foundation less frames straight, and it will help you decide which you prefer. $500?!? Yikes! Glad I found it when I did. I still think it’s more cost effective to build them ourselves though. Thanks for the comment! Good luck with your new hive!

      @@RascalApiary Ha ha good old youtube hey.
      That's a great idea to remove every other plastic in frames, will start that next spring. The honey is for ourselves so we aren't worried about how fast the girls make it.
      Forgot to add the cost was $500Cdn so it's not as expensive as it sounds in American dollars:) But still you did get a great deal.
      Building your own is definitely the way to go. Not sure what we will do at this point as I have enough old hive boxes to do us for quite a few years. Collected them from an old bee keeper who stored them after the hives were infested with hive beetles 15 years ago. Will be a bit of work to get them in good condition again but will save money in the longrun. Not sure if I was lucky or not, lol.
      Take care and have a great day out there!

    What do you recommend for a person to do, to get started with bee keeping? I have a hard time getting to a class, as I drive truck locally Monday thru Friday, with weekends off. I did purchase a bee keeping beginner book. I would like to find a mentor in my area to see if they may be willing to help me learn. Any ideas on how to approach a current bee keepers on asking them to help and learn from them?

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 роки тому

      I love this question! It's one we answer the most often! For the class and information I'd refer you to entomology.ces.ncsu.edu/apiculture/bees/
      or
      extension.psu.edu/beekeeping-101
      They both cost money but if you're serious about beekeeping it's a great option.
      Secondly approach a current beekeeper like you are now! Beekeepers love talking bees and will tell you more than you'd ever want to know in one conversation!
      Here's the typical message I give people
      Start out by finding a
      Beekeeping club/association
      A mentor
      Look into certifying with your states association (if you can even better)
      Attend bee school before getting bees.
      Books we read: hive and the honey bee, beekeepers bible, the bee book, first lessons in beekeeping (from bee school). We have Beekeeping for dummies it's ok at best.
      Bee Podcasts we listen to are: beekeepers corner, beekeeping at five apple farms, kiwimana (plain fun), the hive jive, and beekeeping today.
      We also have our own blog at rascalapiary.com .
      Lastly, I will say the region you're in plays a big part in what you should do with your bees, that's why it's so important to research. Really understand the what and the why. That comes from local knowledge! We're in NC and our videos are gear towards basic knowledge and our region in NC. Our practice would be very different if we lived in Montana or even Florida.
      Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions!

      I just call them local at this point. When we started we had Italians and carniolans. That was four years ago, now they all act Italian, but some look like Russian, carniolan, and buckfast. Every year there's an influx of beekeepers in our area who order bees from everywhere. We haven't had to buy bees since we started. We grew from two hives to 20 hives pretty quick without buying any bees.

    I purchased a few things from my local Rural King and they carry harvest lane honey products and they are terrible products the boxes are not square and and cut terrible and the frames look like a 5 year old did them .the tops and inner covers are the only thing worth getting from them.
