Wow! Just getting into NA Flute and am blown away by the diversity and yet simplicity of it all; love your tutorials, they really break everything down into understandable steps; keep up the great work you do in bringing joy to the lives of those who appreciate the beauty of the song!
I kind of happened upon this scale by accident a while back and had a lot of fun with it - before I knew it I had played for a few hours, wetting out every flute I own numerous times. I find it gives you more flexibility on the mood of your song, and found variants/mixtures of it went well with old jazz standards like Nature Boy (which I'd love to see an arrangement for). Thanks for taking the time to create and share these videos, they've really expanded my playing in a very short time. Would love to one day get to one of your schools, a couple of gals in our local flute circle had been to Zion Canyon and they absolutely loved it. Take Care!
+Just Be Meditation Thanks feedback! I often play the same phrase literally in two different keys - mode 1 and mode 4 ... a nice way to introduce variations ...
I've always ignored mode 4 as no one previously had explained it in a way that made sense. Thanks clint for explaining this prolly. Now I know why I'd want to do this, and I've just double my flute keys as a bonus :)
+Vera Shanov Wow ... Vera talking about music theory!! Go Vera!! Yes ... Ron Volkman, for example, mostly plays in mode 4 because it lets him come *up* to the root note of his melodies, because there are now notes below the root in mode 4.
+Clint Goss I'd heard the reference to Mode 4 but never really found out what it meant/was, your vid made the explanation plain and simple, plus I found out I now own double the flutes !!
A few of my flutes need to add the sixth note when lifting third and/or second holes to get the pitch correct. For example: xxx xxx| xxx xxo | xxx xoo | xxo xox | xoo xox. The only flute that this works well on is my bass D. The others I need to tweak to get the pitches consonant. I hope this doesn't mean my flute was not properly tuned. I do have a sensitive ear, good relative pitch so if something is slightly off, even a bit, it's noticeable to me and not pleasant. They are all High Spirits purchased new directly from Odell. I just assumed that these were the flutes individual alt fingerings. Thanks for the materials on your site. Especially the "pops". I never noticed how much I relied on it to end notes until I started learning others songs (I tend to just make up my own improvisational pieces). The more I thought about it the worse I got. Something that was natural became over thought. Had to go back to basics on that technique as it had become a habit to pop.
This is cool. I just walk around the house noodling between the mode 1 and 4. It's amazing how different the same flute can sound! Switching between modes in the same tune really gives a lot of options. If my phrases start to sound rutted, this really changes things up! Is it possible for the flute to sound dissonant when playing between these two modes or does it just always work out as two pentatonic scales working together with different leaps and steps or do the notes have to be carefully structured to create a pleasing melody? To my beginner ear it all sounds good.
@@ClintGoss I have a 5 hole flute, I tried this and it works fantastic, only downside is that you have only 4 holes to play with then :p. Still fun to toy around with. I'll be buying a 6 hole flute soon anyway so I can play anything without limits
@@ClintGoss After I cover hole 4, I use every open hole available, the one that's always closed is closed and the 4th one is covered , leaving me with 4 ones remaining to play. It sounds really good still.
No I meant to play a phrase on 1 flute then switch to 4 and use another phrase on the same flute in such a way to connect the two. some phrasing works, others make my dog howl, but he seems to howl less than he used to. Practice will determine what works for you as everyone has their own pet go to phrase that works for them.
Hi, I would love to have a naf in low key ... from Flutopedia I came to you!Hi, I would love to have a naf in low key ... from Flutopedia I came to you! you know a good manifacturer of naf?I would also like some advice on how to choose the note that most suits me .. Thank you for your attention. Greetings Matteo Morandi (Italy)
+Christian Briggs Mostly, yes it will. Mode 1 and mode 4 are (if you stick with the pentatonic notes) one note apart. So they are very consonant. But also realize that they have different locations for their root notes ... which also does make them a bit different.
relistened again to mode 4, thanks again!
Oh Clint, what a treasure your teachings are. So grateful. Namaste!
The world is lucky to have you. Namaste.
Very nice Clint, going to be practicing this soon 👍
Thank you Clint! One more helpful video of yours :)
Hell, there’s also mode 3. Now let’s play the blues.
Well ... I'm thinking mode 3 is really major mode - using
This is just brilliant, and I am very much looking forward to trying it out. Thanks so much Clint for directing me to this video!

thank you so much for making these videos!! The Mand scale changed my playing, now Im sure this will even more . Hats off to you sir!

Learning so much from you. Thanks
just a fantastic explanation. ...thank you sooo much !!!!! you guys are awesome!!!
+Cj12sings Thanks so much!!
Fascinating ideas here. Time to go play with my flutes. I also love +Roger Simmons idea of using the two modes/phrases in the same song.
+Just Be Meditation Thanks feedback! I often play the same phrase literally in two different keys - mode 1 and mode 4 ... a nice way to introduce variations ...
It really gets interesting when you combine 2 and 4 in the same song.
+Roger Simmons Do you mean the two flutes, in mode 1 and mode 4?
I've always ignored mode 4 as no one previously had explained it in a way that made sense. Thanks clint for explaining this prolly. Now I know why I'd want to do this, and I've just double my flute keys as a bonus :)
+myaccountagain I think a lot of people that Clint plays with play in mode 4 more than mode 1.

+Christian Briggs Yes, well, flute makers might not be so happy with me for that (!!)

Yes! What we are showing in this video works on many, but not all flutes. Tweaking is sometime (maybe often) necessary to get the "correct" pitch ...

Would be cool to tell us what key the flute is in to start with!!
A new thing! However, the 5 hole flutes are out of the game aren't they?
Not really out of the game, just not quite as easy to pull off. On six hole flutes, the fingering
@@ClintGoss I have a 5 hole flute, I tried this and it works fantastic, only downside is that you have only 4 holes to play with then :p. Still fun to toy around with. I'll be buying a 6 hole flute soon anyway so I can play anything without limits
@@kino266 I actually use the notes *below* the (new mode 4) root - the two notes can lead up into the root and that works well!

Hi Clint, which key is the first flute you played and which key is the second flute you played that matched please.
What flute and key are you playing?
Hey Clint, this might sound a bit daft - If you play a flute in mode 4, in will be harmonious with itself in mode 1 ?
+Christian Briggs Mostly, yes it will. Mode 1 and mode 4 are (if you stick with the pentatonic notes) one note apart. So they are very consonant. But also realize that they have different locations for their root notes ... which also does make them a bit different.

Yoda of the NAF world...
Play, you must!
Imaging our parents telling us that as kids ...
really, the unloved finger,? the finger that makes the native American scale possible? Is it the unloved finger because its the native scale finger?
Of course, a tongue-in-cheek joke ... But sometimes it takes a bit of extra love to get that finger moving after it has been dormant for so long ...
