Joe was a committed socialist to the very end. All of The Clash were unapologetically their own style of left-wing. They had something to say for the downtrodden and disadvantaged, to quote Billy Bragg, they pointed to where the barriers were. From the very start they said in no uncertain terms that they were anti-fascist and they acted on that impulse until the very end. And even for songs and lyrics after that Joe was still singing for the abused immigrants and refugees (like in Shaktar Donesk) and supported workers rights and strikes until the very end of his life. A true legend of punk rock

Well, when I was 16 in 1979 and I saw the Clash for the first time in San Francisco, I thought Joe was pretty profound, too.
I think his comments in this clip, whether scripted or not, pretty much sum up his philosophy, which is reflected in many of the Clash's lyrics.

There used to be a bigger gap between tory/conservatism and socialism in the 70s than it is today. I have heard clips of Joe critizising the Labour many times during the late 90s/beginning of the 2000s. He once referred to Blair as a "slime ale" even, hehe.

I think Joe was an honest persona, you can feel inspired by his work, so many influences he had worldwide with the result of quality music... I mean The Clash and then Joe S were The Only bands that Matters! and if he were alive he would be touring this world out, shouting his views out as good as he did it! Hail The Clash!

aye apparently The Clash themselves when they saw it, they despised it. Joe Strummer said "We didn't like what they were doing with the black people, because they were showing them dipping into pockets and then they were shown being done for something and that was their only role in the film ... Who wants to propagate that? That's what the right wing use, 'all blacks are muggers' which is a load of rubbish. After that rough showing I've never seen it since and nor have any of the Clash." Joe Strummer was not "full of crap", jpchico61 and don't you dare insult him!

Joe Strummed was just human. Full of crap maybe, but not more or less than everybody else. But he got one thing, he could write a good song. And this, it's not like everyone else.He was one of the most exciting rock'n'roller of all rock history. Not like everyone. Anyway, if you want a Saint, try some pops tar, not a rocker.

Well... Joe was just a libtard, all artists were in those times, except Johnny Rotten. The question is, if he was still alive today would he sing for the migrants, the LGBT, against Trump... would he be a liberal ? I don't think so, his simple speeches during those years were rebel back then even though they sound astonishingly dumb and childish today, but back then it was forgivable

Also jpchico61, Joe Strummer was not "full of crap", so don't you dare insult my icon, my messiah and inspiration right in front of me. If anyone's got "simple logic", is someone just looking for simple answers, much like the far right tend to do (and the far-left i will admit). Also I met Ray Gange himself at a benefit gig for the anniversary of Joe Strummer's final London gig before he died, in Kensington and he was the DJ that night and a nice guy. Why do you think he wouldn't turn up if you thought he made Strummer look like a 'twat' in this film in which he and the Clash themselves hated when reviewing it, for what he was saying? You've got it all wrong, mate.

Joe Strummer Was A Left Wing middle class Champagne Socialist. Joe Was A Bit Thick.
The Stranglers Were A Real Band, The Stranglers Were A Right Wing Conservative Intelligent Band, With Great Lyrics. The Clash were a bit Dim, They Were left Wing Tossers.
The Stranglers were intelligent, Right Wing and Very Talented.

@@linfieldf.c.supporter2405 The Stranglers were not a right-wing conservative band at all they played benefits for political prisoners and made anti-rascist comments in their lyrics. They may not have taken part in Rock Against Racism, but they did bring reggae group Steel Pulse on tour with them and Jet Black publicly defended them when receiving audience abuse for their outspoken black political lyrics. Don't be so closed minded🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
I'm a massive Stranglers fan but The Clash far surpass them in terms of social and political awareness, musical ability and cultural significance. The Stranglers were beyond doubt an excellent band (up to The Raven where it trials off) but The Clash revolutionised music forever, with strong lyrics with deep meanings and profound points and with razor sharp instrumentation melding punk, ska, rockabilly, hip hop and more. The Clash were all very intelligent individuals and combined to make something incredibly profound.

I don't know which left wing parties you're thinking of, because we've had a government for 12 years who chomp at the bit for any chance to sew seeds of division - who demonise the desperate who have been rendered as such due to the actions of the Tories. It's like someone stealing your food and then saying you're a danger to society because you're hungry.
Beyond that, the only major opposition - an opposition born from working class roots - wants to disavow its roots and cosy up to the millionaires and billionaires.
Again, a working class party firing it's MPs for joining a picket line of a worker's strike is like someone stealing your food then saying you're a danger to society because you're hungry.
