My band and I played in this Gemini Lounge a number of times during the summer of 1973, and it was a pleasant club with a good crowd. Of course in later years we'd read about what had gone on in the basement--and that was chilling!

My girlfriend lived on Albany Ave. We used to walk past the Gemini Lounge. Never went in. I knew girls who were gangster groupies, who dated married members of his crew. I thought at that time, that they were just wannabes. Never had a clue how dangerous they were.

Nothing hardly ever happened in that basement. It went down UP-stairs. The lounge/bar was a jig. A place used to lure their unassuming victims. The real action happened in an apartment attached to the rear of the club.

Good job with this bro. DeMeo's a fascinating character for us mafia buffs. I lived in Copaigue, Long Island, near Roy's house in Massapequa while all this was going on in the late 70s, early 80s. The thing about Roy, his son said he was a solid family man. Said he never missed a birthday, they watched Disney movies together eating ice cream sundaes, home every night, never spanked him, was respectful to his mother, didn't cheat on her. You would never know he was the same guy hanging guys in the shower in the back of the Gemini. Most people only focus on his efficiency in contract murder, but they tend to forget DeMeo was a money-making genius for the Gambinos as well. The FBI claims the Empire Boulevard operation masterminded by him was the largest and most profitable car theft ring in the history of NYC.

@@Will21st Everything I read about him and especially Al DeMeo's "Sins of My Father" book doesn't give any indication Roy was unfaithful -- but, even if he was that would be the least of his evils lol. He trafficked porn in the early 70's so I wouldn't be surprised. I do know that some psychos live very upstanding and faithful domestic lives. Loyal to their spouses, home for dinner in the evenings, helping out with the dishes, kissing the kids and tucking them into bed each night. But once they leave the house, the monster comes out.

The main lessons I learned from growing up near that neighborhood were 1) keep your mouth shut and 2) you only get one warning. I remember way back some drug dealers were hanging out too close to a high school in that area, and they were warned not to deal hard drugs -- the "influentials" in that area did not want their kids hooked on hard drugs. The drug dealers did not heed the warning, and two of them "went missing". Everyone got the message.

DeMeo was a loan shark and began his loan sharking in high school. He had a job delivering groceries so he had the money to loan. The majority of his victims were people who wouldn't pay the money they owed. Chris Rosenberg was the guy who dismembered the corpses as he once trained as a butcher and kept his butcher saws and cleavers. Rosenberg was the one who threw the towel on the mark and inserted the knife to stop the heart. They used a pool liner on the floor to contain the blood. DeMeo's brother was KIA in Korea and that really hurt Roy.

That whole area is or "was" mafia area. I grew up there. Around the year 1990 I saw a mob hit a vicious beating of a husband and a wife. 5 big white guys jumped out of a old camaro and beat a couple/husband a wife. beat the hell out of them with sticks reaaaal bad. I was 11 years old when i watched this happen. On a different occasion I insulted some kid that I didnt like and I was advised by my friend's father that this is very heavy mafia area neighborhood and that this neighborhood is not the place to insult anyone. My friend's father even told me that their was mafia living on his very block that they were living on. He told me of the names of the families that were living in that neighborhood area. He said that it even though was a extremely beautiful area to live - it was also a very deadly area to live. Back in the 1980's-1990's there were some very vicious/deadly people roaming those new york streets. My step father is italian. I used to hear him and his brother talk about nino gaggi and john gotti years before they were in the mainstream media and famous. I used to live on bath avenue too. I used to see the italian mob social clubs all over the place, that was during the 1980s.

The Gemini is Not in Canarsie, it’s the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. Canarsie is a few miles to East. if you go down Flatlands Ave. past South Shore High School which is at corner of Flatlands and Ralph Ave. that’s the beginning of the Canarsie area and it keeps going to the East to Fountain Ave dump. Also, that side door was a stairway to the second floor apartment where Roy and crew, Anthony Testa, did their work.

It wasn’t that door, it was the last door, the actual apartment with the awning. Awesome video man....chilling to think about it and actually see the drive by. Henry Hill was told to meet Jimmy Burke at the Gemini Lounge after his famous drug bust to “discuss his case.” This was early 1980, Rosenberg was already dead but Roy and the twins and dracula were waiting inside for Henry. They tried to grab his wife. The famous scene in Goodfellas where Karen goes to get the dresses from Jimmy in the back alley, that is loosely based on the Gemini lounge.

    Good video.
Demeo wasn’t killed by John Gotti. The feds picked Angelo Ruggerio and Gene Gotti on a wiretap, talking about the contract being offered to John Gotti and Frank DeCicco.
They couldn’t get to Demeo because Roy had a “team of killers around him.” John Gotti allegedly passed it to. Nino Gaggi was Roy’s capo and sponsor.
Paul Castellano didn’t want to make Roy Demeo. Gaggi vouched for him. It would be his responsibility to deal with Demeo and he could get close to him.
Demeo was paranoid over the mess Chris Rosenberg created by killing and robbing a Cuban cartel boss’s family member and friend. Rosenberg used the name, Chris Demeo to introduce himself and almost caused a war.
Roy chased down and killed a vacuum cleaner salesman, thinking it was an Cuban assassin. If Gotti and his crew calling a meet with Demeo at that time, would’ve tipped Roy off. If they missed, Demeo might’ve flipped. The
Demeo got Castellano wrapped up in the stolen car ring and was committing unsanctioned murders.
    He was out of control.
    Salute.

You could charge $50 for a 1hour tour, or $75 for a 2 hour tour that included a stop somewhere to eat lunch at a famous mafia eatery. In a buss that holds 20 people, that's $1,000 / day for a 1 hour tour. So even 1 tour / week and you'd be banking $52,000 year for the equivalent of working only 1 week's worth of work the entire year.
