Always felt Orbital should cover this tune - and when they did, they made it sound like it was always an Orbital tune!!! IMO, one of the best electronic / dance cover tunes EVER.
My memory is abit fuzzy and I forgot what the jinn told me to run yesterday? Why have the real jins become antisemitic 😭 what happened to Kabal?😭 oh jinns don't want end of the world to happen The F face off with the duck lips orange pip was the logo of a coin waiting to be filed Clash of the Titans jinn scene Together!
my entire childhood in one piece of music. Watching Dr. Who was a weekly routine, that was truly wonderful. Orbital remixing this timeless themetune is the perfect blend old meets new in the most amazing way!
The first time I heard this was a revelation. Of course! It just made perfect sense. What a genius idea. The surprising thing is why no one ever did it before Orbital. I mean, the Dr Who theme is electronic music from the earliest era of "techno" - old old old old old skool!
I remember this night like it was yesterday. A packed field, happy faces and Phil & Paul kickin' it large. I went to their last ever live performance at Maida Vale (R.I.P John Peel, you were a true gem), and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Thanks Phil & Paul for giving us many memories of raves/clubs in the late 80's & early 90's, Glasto in the sun & rain, individual and progressive tracks like this, and head-mounted maglites. We will miss you, and thanks for the memories.
Don't condemn all live electronic music to 'press-play-and-jump-around'. Aint no law says electronic music is hands-off and 90% prepared earlier. NOTHING stopping musicians performing 100% hands-on, meaning if they suddenly lifted their hands, the music would turn to chaos, lose rhythm, or fall flat. You don't need a sequencer before it's "electronic music", that's just 1990s thinking. Electronic drums, synth, FX, instruments and machines played live by people can be electronic music too.
Actually, it was written by Ron Grainer, and Delia Derbyshire and Dick Mills spliced bits of audio tape together to make the music. It's covered in an extra on one of the first two DVDs. (I got the box set and can't remember if it was Unearthly Child or The Daleks that had the extra.)
Big 7 donnor with kid pen in his mouth at the big fat Greek wedding to open what? To counter what pain? Where? When? How? Al tyre? 😂 he's looking at you kid 😂
This is one of the greatest auditory infractions in all of history. Inspired greatness, from the greatest, by the greatest, for the greatest. I wish I had found this on an album since time immemorial. But alas, I shall remain forever content knowing this is among me. Long live the great Dr.
Legends....watched these at liverpool mountford hall. Half raving my t*ts off, half telling my bro off for puking thru the last half of the gig...lightweight, since disowned..
Got that jolt discovering a CD of Edwin Astley's "Secret Agent" and "The Saint", expecting some mis-orchestrated drivel and took a chance -- and sure enough, it was all original tracks from the original series (Plus! The original theme from "The Avengers", which somehow got 'added-on'!) 'Found Orbital's cover of Ron Grainer's great "Dr. Who" theme some years ago; this performance is different, but just as fun.
iam big Delia Derbyshire and BBc radio phonic workshop fan for the the original she cut every note and part in this song from magnetic tape where recordings of the diffrent notes and keys was recorded . if the sound was 2 secounds long she cut out 2 secounds of the sound in the key she needed and mixed it all toghter with tape spilcing she is the master of the dr who theme try too see the alchemist of sound god movie abourt this techmic
I was there!! So drunk and emotional (it being the last Orbital gig in England), screaming uncontrollably. You can probably picture the scene. Still the best live band and the best track ever!
Love the inflatable Dalek at the end. Actually, I love everything about this. I saw them in NYC about 7 years ago. I was right up front, and at the end of the night, I screamed "DOCTOR WHO!" until they played it.
I really do like this sort of music. Many years ago I saw Tangerine Dream in a church in Germany. They were really busy keeping all the oscillators going, along with minimal tape back up. I can fully understand how atmospheric these concerts are. Also, having tried to make some of this type of music, I can now appreciate that putting it together is not as easy as one might think. I have some Chemical Brothers, Front 242 etc but I am old and in need of education on what to listen to!
Even more amazing than this track is the fact that samples were not harmed in the making of it! DW was a big influence on the brothers and it was a live treat for at least 6yrs before they had it put out on a record. Look at me with the facts, huh? Quality tune
My dad was here when mom was pregnant with me, and the deafening applause moment was when he came to the conclusion that the Whovian lives on. That was a relief, I'm now a Whovian myself
orbital fueron el mejor concierto de musica elctronica ke nunca vi y luego los motormark, aunke pq les vi en una sala pekeña y super acogedora, fueron geniales.
Orbital are the Paul and Phil Hartnoll - the first Dr Who was William Hartnoll, their grandfather. It's only fitting that his heirs should create their take on the finest piece of electronic music ever written... Orbital RIP
This was always used to be my Glasto close every year, would catch them performing this while walking across behind the crowd on my way to start work at midnight. Good stuff!
all the people saying "what a waste of a venue" or "techno should never be live", i think i speak for 99% of people when i say lipsyncing, pressing a play button, or a band playing live is all the same because at the end of the day your at the concert for the atmosphere, friends, to party and pay tribute to your favourite artists, everyones having fun and thats what its all about, to a rock band playing the same song 1000 times at 1000 concerts its on par with pushing a play button.
Front 242 has a lot in trackers as well. Which doesn't mean they're not musicians. Especially in Orbital's case you could say they're more like the director of the symphony rather than the musicians. :)
Um... Or maybe more like composers. That's not easy. Even knowing the decks well doesn't equate to a soundscape of beats& tunes and melodies. Distortion. Loops and whatnot. This is composition my friend. It's a gift. Can't learn this. They are the original rave scene tunes too. Come on
Through out the years I always come back here.
Always felt Orbital should cover this tune - and when they did, they made it sound like it was always an Orbital tune!!!
IMO, one of the best electronic / dance cover tunes EVER.
Watching this vid. My 6 yo sez "Mom, this is the beginning of Doctor Who". I am the proudest Mommy on Earth right now.

the group mankind did a fairly decent version of the theme tune back in the 70s
Wtf this is very very very beautiful
they did this tune justice... proper tune... love it.. goose bumps listening to it...
Dr Who is very possibly the most timeless sounding TV-show theme ever.It must have sounded very futuristic in the 60's.Orbitals version is great too.

I think I have their Maida Vale show on MP3 somewhere, definitely remember it being introduced by JP!
We have Delia to thank for all this electronic music... pioneer of sound / techno since 1962.

@@delerium101 ? How is it hard to believe I was there?
I wasn't 'here' so to speak but I saw this live in the boiler room iirc in about 2004 and remember that this performance gave me chills
Lucky you :) I was not there, but I still remember listening to this track first time on my PC around 2002, and it was still mind blowing :D
The Dr Who theme on Acid I adore this version it’s got such guts and vigour and punch
Haha that beachball at the end was a dalek, absolutely epic
I was there I was peaking on mushrooms when this was on !! Truly mental felt like I was in a mental asylum based on the moon 🍄🌝🎇🌠
You start tripping and see William Hartnell telling you that speech right in front of you
Hartnell's voice...what a great doctor he was.
I saw them perform this song about 5 feet away at a small venue in Denver back in 2001. I could have died a happy and content man that night.
I would kill a man to go back in time and watch this live.

This version right here! This is The One!
💫
It’s the version I keep coming back to.
Love the way it segues into Chime at the end.
This is brilliant. The Dr Who theme always makes my hair stand on end anyway, something so...otherworldly about it...
I've seen Orbital live a few times and the best dance act live. This song brings back some good memories. Thanx for the post :)

awesome reworking of a british classic tv theme tune.
That day you randomly looked at the back of CD covers and saw track 7 "Doctor ?" and thought. "NAh, can't be... fuck it, I'm buying it!" And it IS!

Wow you're such a genius.

I saw them last night in Leeds and they certainly did play it. Was the last tune before they went off.
Its on Live at Glastonbury: 1994 - 2004.
one looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong show
I hit the "Like" button so hard, UA-cam started bleeding...
I loved them tossing the Dalek into the audience! Hilarious!
Wonderful live performance! Look for the Audience 'tossing around the Dalek' at the end... I like think Ron Grainer would've given it a nod. :D

Best version of the Doctor Who theme by Orbital, but only after Delilah Derbyshire's original masterpiece nothing will ever beat that one!

Awesome. I've been an Orbital fan since Orbital II. I've never seen them live and I probably never will now that I'm married and with kids.
