You are so close. That is looking great. You are now an expert on the Caterpillar D4 Dozer. You know it inside and out. When you go to the excavator project? We want to see you use the Cat to make adjustments as needed. You know, like moving "things" into place. Straightening things out. Make a ramp, make a pit, you get the idea. You already have it planned! 😉 Thanks, Matt! Lovin' this build! 🤩
"I've never operated one of these before." This has been a helluva ride! Watching you and Tally Ho has been an absolute joy. THANK YOU for the content! Love this shit, so long as it's vicarious. Hands on and I'm an absolute waste of carbon.
So many of you UA-camrs look SO SERIOUS when you're working. Reminds me of monks assiduously hand-lettering manuscripts! Tickles me to see someone else that loves machines like I do. This rebuild is joyous to watch!! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this project. I've watched every minute since you pulled it out of the woods. I look forward to seeing this ol' machine working again. Congratulations, you're almost there. Also looking forward to the excavator rebuild. You da man!
Matt, that starter unit is CRYING out to be painted black! I know you are sick of painting but you really need to paint it black. It's so cool to see this project coming along so well.
There is no one who loves her as much as you do. It is so cool to see it being put together. There is nothing wrong with using a roller and brush to paint her. All you can do is remove as much rust as you can then clean, prime and paint. It is looking good. I hope that it will run great and serve you well. Thanks for the video.😃😃😃
Hi Matt, loving the story!! May I suggest, when you rebuild your waterpump (unless the manual states differently), put the front seal in backwards, so the 'lip' is facing outwards. Otherwise when you grease it, it has the potential to force one of the seals out. It will be protected well enough from debris under the pulley, and still prevent dirt / moisture from entering the bearing. Just my 2 cents worth, anyway! Looking forward to your next instalment!
Greetings from the UK, watched the whole series so far, looking forward to seeing it running. A respite from the mess the UK is in politically at present.
when it is up and running, I will legit watch an hour video of you do nothing other than pushing dirt around, plowing, whatever! been with you from the beginning. excited to see it start! appreciate you taking us along the journey! cheers ~
With that bright cat yellow paint nobody is going to notice the rough spots in the metal. You got her shining like a new dollar. Hard work is paying off Matt. Can't wait to her that kitty come alive.
Gotta hear that new motor purr! I would have left the original patina on it, but at 71, don’t know if I would have had the energy to strip and paint, so there ya go!
Charlie is looking good also! Working in the evening adds a interesting vibe to your videos ; brings back memories of working late in the garage during the summer.
Just a note on that manifold gasket: Permatex makes a copper based (ULTRA COPPER) sealant especially for that application (exhaust sealant). Nice work!👍
The Algorithm brought me to this video, really really enjoy the style! It's long, but it feels really chill. I actually kind of like that you don't go into great detail about everything you do, that's a lot more sustainable I think, and you still highlight really interesting parts (the clutch adjustment for example!). Will be back for more :)
I been watching your channel off and on for last 2 years.Im 60 now.My dad was a korean b-29 tailgunner based outa altus oklahoma he got out in 55.and his dream was starting his own construction buisness in minnesota well he was poor and bought lots of bulldozers and a case backhoe.my dad dyed at 47 years old from liver cancer.i still caint find the minnopilis molene backhoe he had he always worked on that.I found the guy that bought my dads old trailer that dad hauled behind his dumptruck he also bought the case bulldozer with bucket.he said i dunno how your dad did that cause trailer it never had no wood..dad just drove it up and wiggled on the steel beams and it sure wasnt legal but dad did it.dad had a d4 bucket one and he bought i dunno a huge bulldozer with a ponymotor he got it running 2 times enough to push a hillside away into a road then it dyed again.i was just a kid i remember doing iumps to see if i could hop from ground to top of tracks
Hey Matt, ain't it fun working on old ... stuff!:) Two hints, take a piece of wire and make a sharp bend, maybe in the vice, and then cut it off real short like a hook. Hook that in the broken nozzle on your can. I have been able to get the broken piece out every time. Also where the casting is pitted where the flange bolts on use exhaust sealer. It will fill the voids between the gasket. Lots of work! Great job. Can't wait to hear it run!:)
Matt, you're doung one seriously OCD job on the Old Dozer it deserves. Every step pf the way you've improved your abilities at the restoration process needed to do it. Absolutely no doubt that your excavator will get the same attention to detail. They'll be the perfect pair to expand and improve your Duck / fishing pond.
Matt, if you are looking forward to seeing this machine up and running, half as much as I am, you will be an excited man. I really like your attention to detail and the time and patience to put things back together properly. Thanks for the update sir.
I usually turn a spray can of good stuff upside down in a holder, and punch a very small hole in it to relieve the pressure... Then make a bigger hole and empty the contents into an appropriate spray or squirt bottle... Works great, saves a lot of waste... 🤓👍
npalen, you are absolutely right. One of my best buds had almost lost his shop because of a rogue piece of slag that landed on some oily rags lying on the floor. Luckily he had to go back into his shop to retrieve a personal item and found the rags on fire and making bunch of smoke.
It has been truly a pleasure to watch you restore this 72 year old machine from a prior century (like me who is tens years older)!!! Sincere thanks for the hours of enjoyment!! You exemplify the cliche that I was taught “Always choose the harder right over the easier wrong!!” Whenever I was tempted to take a short cut, I could always hear Dr. Thomas’s voice admonishing me!!
I work midnights so when Hillbilly, TwinSticks. C&C, Dirt Perfect are all on , sleep is an afterthought. But well worth it. Love you guys. Can't wait to hear it purr. God bless👍🇺🇸
I just bought a 1961 Allis-Chalmers H3 dozer that needs some fixin'....it doesn't need as much work as your D4 but seeing what you went through to resurrect yours gives me faith that with lots of manuals and youtube videos I'll get mine going too. Thank you, Matt!
*- Great video for us all, Matt... Congratulations with the continuing sprint to the finish line.* *- I was yelling at the screen earlier..."I remembered my hose clamps this time." **29:25** Phew ! ! !* *- And, yes, I worried about when "we'd" be removing the water pump to deal with the pulley shaft inner bearing...**10:00**, and the answer is...**38:36** "On the next video I will rebuilt the water pump."...hurrah(?)*
Great choice on the rad pipe. This is definitely not the time to ignore "minor" things. A day spent now could be a lot more time if it failed in the future.
Excellent job, and it looks beautiful. Keep up the great work. I think spray can products were designed to land on their nozzle and break when they fall from working surface heights.!
Matt, another awesome video. Thank you for putting the old girl soon to to be back in service. Your narrating, problem solving and mechanical skills are truly amazing. Keep up the great work!
Awesome again. The way you take care in building this dozer it’s gonna last another 50 years . Your kids will be able to use it. Think of all the things you will be able to do now. Can’t wait to see it fire up.
The two best tools in the arsenal, GAS AXE and BIGGER HAMMER. Thanks for your hard work. She’s lookin’ good. I can’t wait for the first breaths of life!
Lookin Good Matt, You'll be "puttin around before Christmas??? You can probably pull the stem out of the spray can by running a screw in and pulling it out. But knowing your resourcefulness you've probably already tried. I like your use of the engine hoist. I've never had one and too old to buy one now but it would have been a worthy purchase for me. I work solo just like you. I've used the three point and the loader on my Kubota's for some of the heavy lifting. I've got a "story pole" for the three point and the loader. SUPERB work SIR!!!!!
when ya break off the tip on your can of pb blaster i punch a small hole in the top to bleed off the propellant and then pour the liquid into a spay bottle, much easier than trying to push the broken tip to use the blaster.
You got that caterpillar D4 looking good it's almost ready to go to the ball. Haha it's a joke but it does look very good and shiny have an excellent day
Grinding in the rain at night, not for me! I used the foam roller on a cat exc, worked great. Now using on a bigger Cat exc. Straighten the arm that hits your leg? Looking like a dozer now, nice work.
Looking really nice and you are getting along with it. There will always be problems along the way with old equipment and you just have to fix/replace as you are doing. Thanks for the video.
Just a suggestion, get a small container like a paint mix container ,turn the pb blaster upside down in it and push on it until it empties into container. Then get a dollar store spray bottle and poor it in there. You would be wasting the pb blaster, lol
I always liked the look you achieved. In my work I've always called it "repaired to new" it's that look that old things get when they get fixed up well. You can still see the evidence of their age but they look new otherwise :)
Both seals or you’ll be sorry…….ask me how I know…….. and from an old mechanic, get a BIG can of Permatex Anti Seize- paint every thread that you ever might have to take apart or adjust in the future. From farm machinery, aircraft, sea going boats ( ships to some ) and now living in the northern border of NewYork, read salt covered roads for 6-8 months of the year- silver slime is your best friend. Also comes in gold if that’s your persuasion. Life changing stuff!
She's beginning to look like a machine once again. Looking forward to seeing her run.
Ace!!! She’s looking stunning. Amazing work Matt. So much effort, determination, massive presses and new skills learned. Epic series.

Cammarada would be proud of your fan pulley disassembly.
😂 he would have cussed it out as a stupid design, got the gas axe and cut it off then welded up a new system!

if this Chanel was a DVD box set I would buy it and cherish it for ever. good content

Better that the water pump leaks now than later! Amazing how much you have done! Looking forward to clanking and smoking!
Greetings from the UK, watched the whole series so far, looking forward to seeing it running. A respite from the mess the UK is in politically at present.
Dude, you get a LOT of work done! And of lot of it's done with the crickets in the background. I need to be more like you!
when it is up and running, I will legit watch an hour video of you do nothing other than pushing dirt around, plowing, whatever! been with you from the beginning. excited to see it start! appreciate you taking us along the journey! cheers ~
Me too, watched every step since being saved from the woods. Kudos for patience, persistence, and skill.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Very nice of you to help the nephew develop his interests.
The symphony of crickets is awesome. Keep up the great work! Thanks for the video.
With that bright cat yellow paint nobody is going to notice the rough spots in the metal. You got her shining like a new dollar. Hard work is paying off Matt. Can't wait to her that kitty come alive.
Looking forward to seeing the old Girl starting & moving

My favourite restoration on UA-cam ! Thank you for the pleasure to watch your videos.

Same here !

Sneaking in a video while I'm at work. Dirty pool Matt, dirty pool.
Send all your dozers to Matt - he's an excellent painter, and I know he enjoys it so much.

You need a belt stretcher. I recommend pulled pork barbecue.
Plus extra fixin's.
Be careful using the torch around flammable materials. Something can smoulder for hours and then catch fire in the middle of the night. Nice video!

Great Video, Your attention to detail and not cutting corners is a pleasure to watch.
Thanks for sharing I’m looking forward to seeing her in the dirt the D-4 is a nice size little tractor very handy for all kinds of work
I just bought a 1961 Allis-Chalmers H3 dozer that needs some fixin'....it doesn't need as much work as your D4 but seeing what you went through to resurrect yours gives me faith that with lots of manuals and youtube videos I'll get mine going too. Thank you, Matt!

Excellent Craftsmanship and intense attention to detail....🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great choice on the rad pipe. This is definitely not the time to ignore "minor" things. A day spent now could be a lot more time if it failed in the future.
Excellent job, and it looks beautiful. Keep up the great work. I think spray can products were designed to land on their nozzle and break when they fall from working surface heights.!
Bought a new Bayou back in the late 90's ,those were good 4 wheelers.
Great work & looking real spiffy for old girl.
I remember when you draged it in .
Amazing getting to see a real start to finish rebuild.
Matt, another awesome video. Thank you for putting the old girl soon to to be back in service. Your narrating, problem solving and mechanical skills are truly amazing. Keep up the great work!

Another stellar video. “I need to get my other wrench.”
Breaks out the cutting torch. 🤣
The two best tools in the arsenal, GAS AXE and BIGGER HAMMER. Thanks for your hard work. She’s lookin’ good. I can’t wait for the first breaths of life!
Butcher
"The other wrench"😂
The best rust penetrant is a 50:50 mixture of ATF and acetone, in a spray bottle.
Those are character marks. Lol got her looking good. Almost ready to dance. Good job
I like the way the exhaust manifold is held on there makes it so simple to take on and off
Wow Matt you have come a long way with that D4!! She looks real good!! Best of luck with it, see you next video.
Been following along with this project Matt, I`m amazed how you have done it all on your own, great work.
Absolutely stunning workmanship!! This machine should do you great service!!
All the best from Surrey BC Canada
Lookin Good Matt, You'll be "puttin around before Christmas???
You can probably pull the stem out of the spray can by running a screw in and pulling it out. But knowing your resourcefulness you've probably already tried.

SUPERB work SIR!!!!!
I'm loving it. Can't wait to see it running AND WORKING. 4K format is excellent.
Gonna look good when D4 is done. And should work as good as it looks
Thanks for another great video, always enjoy seeing the progress on the old girl !
when ya break off the tip on your can of pb blaster i punch a small hole in the top to bleed off the propellant and then pour the liquid into a spay bottle, much easier than trying to push the broken tip to use the blaster.
Getting so close and looking so good!
Congrats to the winner!
BTW: The left tail light is out on your trailer.
mice ate the wires 😢
And one of the rear tires on the Kawasaki is mounted backwards!
Damn good video Matt. Cant wait to see the winch on Salvage workshops channel.
You got that caterpillar D4 looking good it's almost ready to go to the ball. Haha it's a joke but it does look very good and shiny have an excellent day
Great job Matt as usual get it cranked up
Can't wait to see smoke , it's been along time coming, fine work
Matt's words of wisdom, "This is not the time to be lazy". 28:25
More Hillbilly! Awesome!
Nice work ... it's great to see you dedicate your focus to one project until completion.
Looking good Going to be too nice to see it working again but we know that's why you got it
21:40 "let me get my other wrench out, cut scene to torch" LoL
Blood, sweat and tears.... Matt gave it all. Respect again and again.
Dang you have done an amazing job. Can't wait to see it working. I hope you plan on some of that.
Your attention to detail is amazing!
Take a small self-taping screw to pull the rest of that plastic out of that new can , it will work.
Man you’re not messing around, this is awesome! Love the video.
That machine is beautiful....what a job you have done.
Matt, great to see your progress. She's looking great. Your resolve and thorough work is a thrill to see!
Curiosity plus commitment plus confidence, awesome triad.
Quickest 43 minutes of my life, sweet looking machine loved every minute of this build
I can’t wait to see this thing start
What an absolutely fabulously job you are putting down on that machine! I fully enjoy every minute of what you're doing! Simply GREAT!
That Cat is looking fantastic!! Great job.
I'm so ready to hear this thing running! Amazing progress! Thanks for posting!
Looking good. A family friend had a dozer like that he used it every day logging. Great machine.
Good morning Matt, have watched every step of the way and you are doing a fantastic job 👍👍👍
Thanks Matt, some really enjoyable and informative entertainment!
Wow! What a terrific , job! I can not wait to watch you turn the key over on the dozer.!
Just a suggestion, get a small container like a paint mix container ,turn the pb blaster upside down in it and push on it until it empties into container. Then get a dollar store spray bottle and poor it in there. You would be wasting the pb blaster, lol
Coming along well! Great Job!!! Keep it up! Cannot wait until the next video!
Getting so close. I can't believe this is the same hunk of scrap you dragged out of the woods back then.
I always liked the look you achieved. In my work I've always called it "repaired to new" it's that look that old things get when they get fixed up well. You can still see the evidence of their age but they look new otherwise :)

Matt, red locktite is for high temperatures.
Blue will fail and act as a lubricant allowing studs to loosen due to heat and vibration.
It must feel good to be making good progress assembling, job well done so far
