    Thank you for being so realistic about living and integrating in a small rural community. Coming from one myself I recognize the deep sense of belonging that such an environment creates. Puck will be a greater sharer of that by being part of the life of the local school. Not everything is about ‘book learning’. Living with such educated people she will not miss out on that either.

    When I went to live in London in the 1960s the house where I rented a room had no bath or shower. So early in the morning I had the use of the kitchen and a basin for what was called sponge baths. This is how everyone operated on the street. I should also add that this was in the east end near the docks. It worked for me.😊

    In the Volkskrant I just read an article about some dude named Jeroen. Everything he build off grid on his land in Portugal was destroyed by the wild fires. He was really sad but told about the great help of the off grid community there in Portugal. Everyone is helping him restore his cabin and such. Thought that was nice to mention. Great community you people have over there! 👍🍀🧚‍♀️

    Public schools in Portugal are good and free. Only need pay the food 1,50€ for lunch and 0,40€ (for breakfast or for afternoon snack if the kid stay extra hours because the parents work until late).
    The books are completely free and they ask only in the beginning of the year for some coloring pens, colored pencils, some cardboard's (my region they ask for 10) and two notebooks, less than 12€ for this. They ask for this small list of utensils because they want that the kid take all the works they make in kindergarten to their home.
    Right now they start with English in first or third year (about 6 or 8 years old, it depend of the school some schools start only in third year because they think that the kid need to know to read and write to start learning another language).
    And they help the kids that come from other countries to learn Portuguese. But you need to help your daughter right now because in the school the teacher only can speak english and not dutch. Going to be a little bit harder for your daughter and the teacher because ""no one"" in Portugal have any knowledge of Dutch, my advise is start to teach your kid some words of english.
    Good luck in your projects. :D

      I would disagree with your advice on multi languages ,Artur. Obviously all children are very different, but with my own children I took your approach and focused both on my mother tongue and the school's language when my children were pre-school age. In hindsight I'd have only spoken my mother tongue with them. I think it would have helped them to be more fluent in my first language. They'll quickly learn the school's language..it's the dominant language: the language that they need for friends, school, shops, everything. Kids know that and as Lea is saying will usually pick that up very quickly. My mother tongue they only need for talking to us ( parents) and whenever we visit grandparents. So they have less practice and perhaps also less motivation, as they know we'll understand them anyway if they use the school's language. So I thought I'd just add my thoughts here for anyone reading along.

    🇬🇧 If you have a spot suitable for a shower build a structure with a galvanised tank over it and maybe the heat of the day would warm it enough for a shower to be comfortable. And maybe in the winter another separate solar panel. Look at Kris Harbour who built a joint shower and composting loo.

    Goats need a strong inedible cord that connects them to a strong long stake in the ground if you don't want to lose them(since that's cheaper and easier than fencing). They don't need any infrastructure. They gladly sleep in the rain in the open.

    Wishing all the best to a wonderful, hardworking family. Portugal is a nice country but not a perfect one. I am Portuguese and grew up in a community where the majority of men worked the land, my grandfather and his brothers all owned their own homes and were owners of small plots of agricultural land. My grandmother baked artisan bread, biscuits, sweet bread, raised her own chickens and looking back I think that was wonderful that I had the opportunity to watch my grandmother lit the brick oven to bake her delicious bread. Cheers!🌺🧡🥚🥚🥚🥚🧡🌺

    Many viewers might not understand the climate of Portugal and the particular micro climate where you are. I understand your property is near Castelo Branco. This is the nearest Portuguese city with Wikipedia climate info. One of the most important climate statistics that can be found is that the winter low temperatures do not get so low as to require foundations into the ground or excessive insulation to reduce heating costs. Cooling is a greater need. With this in mind it is easier to be a pioneer and start with little cost. Regarding building a home structure I hope you investigate Rammed Earth and or an abode dug into a hill side.
    Many European countries are now looking for people willing and able to move to village and rural settings, as you have. Many offer property with a low price, though they need much in rebuilding. Agricultural development is sought after. You are on the best path.
    My wife and I live in Troy, NY, USA. Our first house was a neglected 110 year old structure (old in terms of USA), it had no functional kitchen and a very rudimentary bath, both of which were fully rebuild with in 10 years. Our climate and temperatures here are similar to Northern Europe, lots of cold and snow in winter. Good luck to you.

      Cooling is much more important indeed :) We are thinking of an earth bag house, partially dug into the hill. Will see though ;)

    Goats is the best idea to clean the land and in a sustainable way, and yes fencing is important.
    Good price about 10.000€ for a little more than 3 ha.

    Goats would love all your lovely plants... I wouldn’t go there until you are ready, when the time comes, if it comes. I love old trees, and old buildings... etc. I’m with you Lea!
    I think your decision to send Puck to school is a good idea. Nothing is set in stone... if it doesn’t work out you may need to try something else but the important thing is to try!

    Lea do you know what type of olive trees you got growing? are they table olives or are they a oil variety?. I love your videos.

      As far as we know and have been told by the previous owners the olives are of the cordovil and galega variety. Cordovil is mainly for olive oil but can also be eaten as table olives and the galega is specifically for eating they are big and are harvested green.

    As an engineer, I also looked at the rocks used for the foundation of the deck, although it works, it does place extra strain on the wooden structure, certainly you have some seismic activity and it taxes the structural integrity of the platform. encapsulating the rocks to avoid shifting would be the simplest way to offer longer term stability/durability.

    Careful with constrution, even if theres no foundations., winter can be harsh.
    Most of the places can have small construtions to supporte agriculture than sometimes are legalized as habitation but fines can be harsh and fires can be a life or death problem in long term. Any site near a small village usualy have possibility to construct or small abandon houses cheap to buy and reabilitate.
    Castelo Branco is very hot in the summer and very cold in winter.
    You guys already have a land but I would advise to recover a tradicional abandoned house with land and invest in recover it as a family project, usualy when theres even a ruin you can use it easly legaly and provides better protetion in winter with snow or very strong wings, the most important is the roof. The climate is generaly good but theres cycling spikes of harsh weather that shouldnt be ignored.
    To buy any property forget the agencies or sites, talk to locals for ok and low prices, water sources like wells, water mines, springs and water lines are very important for what you want to achieve, and sun exposition is very important to grow some things. Good luck and careful with the permits and legal stuff.

    Do you have a ruin , as long as you keep to the outside wall area you don’t need planning permission otherwise the Portuguese chaos means you can build & pay the fine which is considerably less than using architect and/or surveyor, just keep in with your neighbours.

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  4 роки тому

      It really depends on what you want to have on the land and where in Portugal you would like to buy. It is very easy to find land on various websites or ask a local real estate agent to go and look with/for you. We don’t consider Portugal to have a worse bureaucracy than other countries we’ve lived in. It will never be a fun thing to have to deal with, but when you speak the language or bring someone who does we found everyone very helpful and cooperative.

    How do you get your post? Do you have a PO box, do you collect it from a local post office, or is it delivered to?

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Mick, we have a mailbox in the village and we showed the local mailman where it is and that seems to work alright. Maarten passes it on his walks with Louis or when doing the recycling. A neighbour accepts bigger packages for us and brings them to us on his tractor usually accompanied by lemons and/or wine. However we are thinking of opening a PO box because some viewers have asked for our address to send stuff and we don’t want to put that burden on our neighbour.
