Great video Jim! Congrats on the grades! I think covers other than SI (with superstars) will do well also. Lower populations and much less printing of those issues. I think the key will be condition, cover appeal, and who is on it. Covers with Jordan, Brady, LBJ, Mantle, etc. will do well. Have even seen Subscription SI Jordan covers doing well in good condition. Thanks for sharing!
WHEW, if there's still no 9.0 or higher Tyson or Magic 1st issue covers, I can't wait to get mine graded! I went to the last game Cal played at Tropicana Field with one of his mags in a rigid holder and a section cut out where I wanted him to sign it. At the end of the game a line starts forming behind the Orioles dugout and I'm right near the front! Then 2 lines form. Cal comes out and starts signing at the other line. I look up and that line is halfway around the stadium. I sat there about 10' away watching Ripken sign for about 15 minutes hoping he'd take pity on me and sign but he didn't. Was cool being so close watching him do his thing! Love Ripken, such a class act
Wow I have so many questions. First off when I saw that first slab at .5 I thought to myself that "Jim has lost his midas touch" because you usually get fantastic grades I could only hope to get. I actually started laughing (sorry) because I've never even seen such a low grade. Of course you more than made up for it with the other mags. Now my questions. 1. I've never seen one of your mags come back as a subscription issue. I always worry about that because a lot of sellers have become really adept at removing the labels without leaving any trace or residue. Is there anything you ask the seller or do you do anything to inspect the magazine before submitting? 2. Can you actually tell by looking at the graded mags that they weren't pressed? Is it that noticeable? 3. I have several copies of the Big Ben and Lebron on campus editions. Why would you request pressing those considering they are basically more like pamphlets than a real magazine? Would pressing make that much of a difference in something that is just a couple of pages? 4. What membership level with CGC makes the most sense? Here's an idea. Maybe make a video on what you think are very underrated or overlooked issues that could be worth a lot of money in a few years.
Hey, I laughed too when I saw that .5! 1 - I've had several issues that I thought were newsstand come back subscription. That's the risk everyone takes buying raw issues, you never know until they come back from CGC. I always ask the seller to confirm if it's newsstand, but many of them just don't know. I look at all my raw issue in various light, under magnification and under UV light before mailing them in. 2 - Yes, I can usually tell by looking at an issue whether it's been pressed or not. to me it's noticeable. 3 - Thinner magazines are actually more susceptible to spine ticks, and spine ticks that break color. Plus finger bends are just as likely on a thin issue vs a thick one. Does it make a difference? What's the difference between a 9.6 and a 9.8?....almost nothing! So if you're looking to get the highest grade possible, then yes, I would get them pressed. I press every single issue before sending for grading. 4 - The best membership for most people is the $149 level. That's because you get a $150 credit each year. So if you grade at least 5 magazines a year, it pays for itself. Underrated issues is a good idea. Next podcast!
@@cgcsportsillustrated5290 Thanks for answering all my questions Jim! Keep up the continued great job. I think I should probably get a good magnifier like you have on your desk. My goal is to send in 50-75 issues to CGC this year, so do you think I should get the $299 membership?
@@victortoombs4754 if you submit at the cheapest tier at $32 each, you’d need to submit about 50 issues a year to make that worth it. That’s because the $299 membership gets you a 10% discount on all grading fees
@@cgcsportsillustrated5290 Do you remember the podcast you did with a fellow collector that found some pristine older issues? That made a really great video and that would be another idea to do more of those in the future.
@@victortoombs4754 I just need to find another person who stumbled across the find of the century!😂. Seriously I’ll try to find another collector who wants to come on, good suggestion

Thanks Rick! Yes, I think any magazine with a big star on the cover and a high grade will be collectible
Another successful submission. Congrats!
Thanks my man, this one was a roller coaster!

Maybe that .5 is a 1 of 1
It’s definitely a 1 of 1…that’s nobody wants, even me!
