Anyone that pass by and want to help or support Klong Toie community you don't need to only donate money, I have a challenge for you, if this video reached 200k (so please like and share 😊), I will go to be a volunteer with Bangkok Community Help to change klong Toie (I got an idea), Thank you for your support 😇

Tremendous episode! For me, this is a perfect example of two things: #1 - You can overcome any odds against you if you have the determination to do it. Which leads to #2 - Never look to the government, any politician, anyone else to come and be your savior; you have to do it yourself. That's why these tremendous charities like 'Bangkok Community Help' perform miracles such as was shown; they have the mindset of "just get out of our way, we'll do it ourselves" and why they've completely earned the financial and material support of me for the past year.

Great guys and yes, they just get into it and get things done as needed, and they don't mind getting their hands dirty, they are at work 24/7 to help many communities and they deserve all the praise.

If you think any politician will fix it, you’ll be waiting forever - they only want votes, power, and money.
Why isn’t any fixed it yet? Exactly…

I have been very fortunate to call Father Joe of the Mery Centre Foundation a good friend for many years. What he has achieved with the help of many locals and also expats and friends abroad is simply amazing. And one thing that is also very special. Everything they do is in cooperation , friendship and mutual respect with the local buddhist and muslim community. It's an example from this very poor community to the rich western world.

Nice Khlong Toei video again ! Love it that you make respectful videos instead of click-sensation.
    (1) time 19:23 where you say that "i safely bet that any job application from someone with an address from a place like this would just get ignored(..) i'd love to be proved wrong" --> A few weeks ago I met someone in 70 rai part of Khlong Toey community who works at Intercontinental Hotel (near Chidlom BTS). Not a high paying job, but still at a 5-star hotel. Though there may be some bias (we'll never know), they are not automatically rejected.
    (2) Just before that you brought up the arguement some may have that a bus is only 8 baht, street food is only.. etc.. to justify low wages. Indeed those cheap prices can't make up if the wages are just TOO low. I know a woman there who stopped working as a cleaning lady somewhere along sukhumvit, because the price and time to commute from Khlong Toei community was just not worth the low pay. Now she sells fried surimi and fish balls in front of her little rented home in front of flat 22. She makes even less money now, but at least she's home. Also commuting means changing several busses/songthaews/motocycle to get where you work.
    (3) Moving indeed means completely destroying their very strong community spirit. I have friends there, know quite a few people there and can't imagine the effect of moving and breaking up this community.
For instance the old lady Gregg was talking to at time 22:56 I know her also, she's from lock 6, but I see her sometimes at 70 rai sitting and talking. She can't walk without her stroller. No idea how she would cope if forced to move and seperated from people she knows so well.

I remember the days when it was really not fun there because of the drug problems. There are still problems, but it is better now. And you meet absolutely lovely, friendly people there. When you visit Klong Toey, please show respect for the people. A lot of people have worked really hard to improve the situation there, and especially behave yourself when taking pictures!

It's not an easy problem to fix. I did a VR short film about one disabled lady and her plight living and trying to survive with all the talk about relocating everybody. Which didn't happen. The film did win an award at the Hollywood Guerilla Film Festival for stories about wealth inequality.

Pat, thanks again for this coverage and bringing awareness about these people in these communities. As I have mentioned before, I lived near here in the mid 80s while attending the International School of Bangkok on the old campus on soi 15 Sukhumvit. While I noticed these conditions back then, I have a better awareness of it and often reflect back when I watch these types of videos that you and Global Travel Mate make. One day, I hope to come back to Bangkok and volunteer with Bangkok Community Help and look for ways to raise money to donate.

This video, your best ever from my perspective, reinforced that view but also gave a much better viewpoint of the people who live there. Look how beautiful that basketball court is!!! Wow! As an American Hoops Head, I've always argued that nothing brings a community of young people together like just having a playground with a basketball court in it and I know that extends to Futbol for much of the rest of the world. Clean water and gardens and libraries aren't too shabby either. Props to the organizations putting in this work for Klong Toei. Great Video Pat!

What a great way to start my Sunday morning! Very interesting Pat, i have never felt uncomfortable anywhere i wandered around Bangkok in my trips there.... Interesting to see the railway line splits as it gets near the river, i wonder if both branches see trains? And have you got out in the morning yet to film the oil train working along this line?.....

By far, this is one of your most interesting videos. As much as I like the « vanishing Bangkok » set of videos and the « Bangkok Noir » set, This is where it hurts but it’s also where the city’s heart beats. The bit at the start with the two media agencies overlooking the klong communities is priceless.
What is obvious is also the very Thaï way of « not mentioning » anybody. Let’s not offend anybody. Ahem… There’s a king for a good reason and his father did a lot.

Amazing. I moved to Khlong Toei right after the reopening in 2021 but lived in one of the better apartment areas. I lived there for 6 months and passed the “slums” several times as a short cut to get home from the park or the fresh market. I wasn’t aware how poor living is there. Thanks for showing this area from the very inside and showing what social activities can change in these areas of Krung Thep🙏
