Was this taken as a DI (or direct output even) from the pedal? It sounds really dry
We took an XLR straight out FM9
@@premierguitar Ahh that will explain it. No idea what it was like in person but I imagine it would have sounded a little more natural if you mic'ed it instead as dry patches are made to incorporate room noise but you would probably emulate that on direct patches for recording otherwise it sounds a little ... unnatural.
A wizard is never all analog or digital; he plays precisely what he needs to.
Well stated Doc. To choose one or the other would limit creativity.
Myself, for the last 46 years of playing I've been a analog-guy, that said, I'm totally open to these newer digital rigs.
My only complaint, I've been playing through the same Fender Twin Reverb I purchased new back in 1976, I just can't imagine these modern processors lasting that long without totally failing. Again, that just goes to my age and mind-set, newer products are not designed to last very long as regular updating of equipment is now the norm. Phones, computers and even vehicles are no longer designed to last very long as they'll be left behind due to technology advancements.
And that is my crux, I have a difficult time spending what some would consider a significant investment for a product designed to be replaced within 5 to 10 years.
All that being said, the flexibility and creative possibilities are amazing, not to mention that Twin Reverb of mine isn't getting any lighter to carry!
Nice Gandalf joke.
@@TheCyberMantis Indeed yes.
And to be fair, there are worse things to be called than Gandalf. Of course, there is Gandalf the Gray and Gandalf the White! LOL To continue this, if Gandalf played guitar he would be fortunate to play as well as Mr. Govan.
It’s just sent to him by the gods and he makes do
Great comment
01:17 It’s rare to see Guthrie speaking proudly about himself.
He seems really proud to be working with Hans Zimmer on these film scores :)
Hans Zimmer couldn’t have chosen a better musician to work with.
I've never heard of him speak out of context.
I think he was just preluding the conversation with the fact that he was able to do those sound effect with a digital fx.
Up
3:35 what a sound! What effects were even used on that thing?
Waaaw he even plays on the Zimmer Dune OST... OK now my mind is absolutely blown. 💯 This guy....
-Insert Universe meme
Let’s face it, it’s not sexy but it’s practical
is he gonna make another album
The fact Guthrie played the bagpipes in Dune with his guitar is absolutely mind-blowing for me...that was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, mainly because of the epic score
What scene is it actually?
@@dimi409 I suppose the one when the Atreides family lands on Arrakis for the first time with their huge ships
@@dimi409 when they arrive to Arakis and Josh Brolin and his army walk outside the ship
@@anubisrocker Ok, amazing stuff!
A mind blower from a wizard guitarist.
I’ve seen people with huge set ups do nothing, and then there’s Guthrie whom will blow your mind with that pedalboard and couple of guitars. The Aristocrats show was worth every penny.
But what's inside a fm9 is bigger than any huge setup...
The company that makes that pedalboard "Fractal Audio" makes the best sounding equipment in the industry. That's why all the big guys use it. It sounds amazing and you don't have to lug a bunch of heavy ass tube amps and cabs around. In-turn it saves you money, time and you get the same exact sound at every gig. What else could a person want? :)
@@Funny-bf8xf Pretty sure the big guys use Helix and Quad cortex as much though. They all sound great
Fractal isn't just some kids toy...they produce the best modellers on the planet. Plus a lot of big name guitar players are using modellers and plug ins these days

So So SO glad Guthrie is back on social media. He's the only guitarist, other than Robert Fripp, who made me want to practice. Guthrie, you are guitar!
You should just want to practice. ThT is when you're "in tune" with the universe.
So did he switch to digital before or after battling the Balrog?
After, I imagine, when he became Guthrie The White
During
Guthrie can play thru literally ANYTHING and sound amazing.
the greatest living guitarist!
Yup. He can connect into a concrete wall and tear it up!
No way. He sounds the worst he has ever sounded imo with this . He needs to go back to amps and pedals . He doesn’t even come close to sounding the same imo
@@peezymeds1580 Maybe you're forgetting that on stage, even real amps and cabs are mic'd into the P.A. And this is what the audience hears-- a mic'd amp and cab. Not the same. And yet it still sounds great.
Also, anyone can play though a FM3, FM9 or Axe FX II and sound amazing. They pretty much play themselves.
Guthrie’s own Gandalf comment is hilarious considering he IS the grand wizard of the fretboard. Dude can sound like and play anything he wants. Truly one of the most amazing musicians of modern time.
We got a few wizards out there. Guthrie, Petrucci, Romeo, Loomis, Kiko.... etc.

I've been building tube amps since the 80s so I am old school. But I have to admit, I absolutely love my Headrush. I think we can have both.
Amazing to hear an old school tube guy compliment the digital approach with the Headrush. Good on you for your objectivity!
The timing of this Rundown couldn’t be better, just the other day I’d just been Googling what rig Guthrie had been running on this latest run of Aristocrats shows after spotting there was no traditional guitar cab behind him.
Guthrie could play anything and make it sound incredible but the dichotomy of his modern fully digital and compact setup on one side of the stage and Bryan’s utterly old school mega stack of doom is pretty cool!
One pedalboard to rule them all!
😁 Very good.
@@markknight6445 absolute best guitarist on earth!!!! and middle earth!!!

@@markknight6445 Nice!! sincerely one of my fav players, even if there is some sort of sorcery involved!
@@p8emusic398 😄I could not agree more. He seems like a very humble and nice guy too.
He's not precious.
A truly fantastic guitarist. A technical master whose virtuoso skills don't drown out the simple beauty of music.
exactly, he's pretty much perfect in that sense
Guthrie Govan is a musician which has a marvelous intellect, well spoken and when he touches the guitar; the angels sings.
I played a modeler straight to PA with a symphony in Puerto Rico
... and what Guthrie says about the sound guys and stage volume is bang on. You just have to remember to use the high and low cuts otherwise you're going to get a lot of foul looks from the sound police. The hardest part of the gig was knowing full well that what I was hearing through my in ears was NOT what the audience was hearing. That was a little alienating, but if you're a "pro", you'll ride it out and concentrate on playing the right notes with the right picking dynamics. That's what really matters.
I wouldn't have predicted Guthrie working with Hans Zimmer as an outcome, but it just feels correct. They do amazing work together!
Glad to hear him say how HAPPY he his with his current rig. At the end of the day that’s what this is about right?
I used to be opposed to digital modelers until someone reframed my thinking on them. They’re not supposed to sound like a live rig; they’re supposed to sound like a mic’d up rig through your monitors. That being said, digital is so versatile and simple, it really makes sense for any situation where you’re playing through a decent sound system.
I'm pretty sure the FM3 has separate outputs for you to send to FOH and your amp simultaneously with the cab+power amp turned off on one of them. So it can do either or both if you prefer that.
@@plumbummusic2051 It does, and i use it that way.
Time to step up the game for Rig Rundowns when modelers are involved.
For example, an AxeFx can be (and often is) the whole artist's rig, similarly to this case.
Even though it is contained in a single unit, conceptually it is still a signal out of a guitar and into a rig made of pedals, amps, cabs, microphones, just like a real one.
Artist : "I'm using an AxeFx (or any other modeler)"
PG:
Q1 "what amps/models are you using, what for?"
Q2 "Are you trying to reproduce the rigs/tones used on X album or do you have a different approach?"
Q3 "Stock IR cabs, Third party, custom made by yourself, what cabs and speakers?"
Q4 "For rhythm/lead/clean work, do you switch patches/amps or keep the same one but turn on/off pedals, boosters etc, or do you use mainly your guitar volume to control saturation?"
Pretty much the same as a physical rig.
Considering how much time Guthrie spent toying with this unit during lockdown, his unique and varied experience, the way he plays, and how articulate he is when explaining what he does, this could have been a goldmine of information (and also huge advertisement for Fractal Audio :D ).
THAT WAS HIM doing the bagpipes thing on Dune?!?!? Amazing! Loved that piece.
Guthrie gives the guy space to speak .. and he says nothing.
Guthrie tries to talk and the guy keeps talking over him.
As great as the digital is and sounds (has come a long way) these digital boards WILL fail. I had a Helix and the thing was brilliant, few years later there was a software failure and the warranty was already done....same thing happened to my buddy 2 days before his show.
I went back to pedals and a marshall tube amp and am never lookin back!
Vintage Amps and analog effect routing is even more prone to fault & issue than digital all in one compact. Valve are like glass even differente temperature make them sound as they like... Just a cable not well soldered within a pedalboard could cause issue, noise and a show stop... And a lot more... Relability is not an argument for analog. I'm sure Guthrie wants to simplify his life with digital, The reason why he uses just one or two guitars at all.
woah. he's the bagpipes?! mind blown.
The frustration forum dwellers feel when they see a guitarist objectively more skilled than them using gear they deem unacceptable is honestly hilarious
People will have the audacity to only ever play in their room then go and tell a world touring Guitarist how a rig should be made😂

The Last Rig Rundown Ever Made
Guthrie is the Chuck Norris of guitarists 🤘
okay-okay nice but Guthrie has the sound in his hands...
I finally got me a Helix about 6 months ago. At first it's mind numbing all the choices and options you have at your feet. But once you get the hang of it and get comfortable, there's no going back. And this isn't some multi-effects board like a Pod or anything you ever had. These are studio quality models. The sounds are stunning. I took 34 pedals to my local Guitar Center and sold them ALL. I only have the Boss TU 3 left.
I got a Helix a while back too. The thing I love about it, is the intuitive interface. You can use it without having to read the manual every 5 minutes.
@@zedcarr6128 Exactly. At first I was like "holy shit, I will NEVER understand this thing" and 2 weeks later I am flying around, creating scenes, snapshots, etc. like I made the thing.
Friggin sellout
Yes! In my case I have a Fractal and an Eventide, which, between the ,2 give me an entire galaxy of sounds. Consequently, I only have a few effects pedals-- ones that are very unique that the Fractal and Eventide don't do.
@@stevedrake360 Uh, I'm curious. What are those few effect pedals that Fractal and Eventide can't do. And are you talking about the kinda old Eventide H9 Max?
This interviewer sounds like he couldn't care less. Which is sad because of how utterly incredible Guthrie Govan is and how much he can share
I noticed that as well. Huge scandal.
This interview seems really rushed. Don't know if it's because some time constraints or if the interviewer just couldn't care less...
@@heavydiscotrip4846 Yes indeed, and i dont like it. Guthrie is such a giving person besides his brilliant playing.
No matter how many times you hear it, it never gets old. It's the player 1st. then the gear.
So many guitarist think they sound great by letting you know what vintage pedals they got but you have to be able to play, then play well to know the sound you want in your head.
You watch everyone switch to digital now that Guthrie's done it. 😆
Well to be fair, Fractal already is used in countless Arena and Stadium rigs around the world (Metallica, Deff Leppard, Journey). It's hard to beat honestly. Every amp and effect in the world at your disposal, and they are 100% consistent in sound nightly with zero maintenance. And for small tours like the Aristocrats, you can't top the convenience of being able to carry your whole guitar rig around in a backpack. Especially when most of their gigs are fly-in one nighter's or single bus tours that are hitting smaller venues.
As if it wasn't already hard enough to get an FM9. Now we for sure won't ever be able to get one.
@@TheCyberMantis Meh, just an Axe-FX 3 and an FC-12. That's what I did. Wouldn't trade it for the world. :)
@@brianjones8432 I will wait for the FM9.
But that was never mentioned in this video.. And i've never heard anyone try and elevate their guitar playing stature by boasting about pedals either. Literally your whole comment is based on an idea you have in your head, and not on reality...
Vintage Amps and analog effect routing are more prone to fault & issue than digital all in one compact unit. Valve are like glass even differente temperature make them sound as they like... Guthrie Govan is such gentleman!!
Is Guthrie playing? Cool I don't care what he's playing through.
The lesson learned from this: Plug Guthrie into any rig and it’ll sound better than 99% of active guitarists alive today.
I dont think going digital is a step forward. Especially the 'screaming rock thing' sounds so digital and just plain bad.
Going digital is an option. And now more than ever it's an option many artists are taking given the variety and modeling ability. While you're certainly welcome to your opinion, I've seen countless people like yourself fooled in a heartbeat the moment there's a cab onstage, simply because they hear with their eyes. I'd pay good money to see you pick it out in a blind test. But hey, you do you. :)
Pro tip-when you've booked the most articulate guitar player alive, let him talk
These things are just tools, nothing else! something Digital Fans or Analog Fans will never understand, as they are only fanatics.
I think his open minded approach is awesome. Amazing player!!
Bottom line… the audience can’t tell the difference between a real amp and a digital one.
@DJ Moose I know that. It wasn’t my point.
@DJ Moose It’s cool DJ. The digital stuff has gotta so good, I doubt if most people at a concert would be able to tell. As long as it sounds good, that’s all that matters. ☮️
@DJ Moose can you though?
Bottom-est line... The vast majority of the guitarists swearing by tube amps in this comment section wouldn't be able to tell the difference in an actual blind test either. Guitar players are just as guilty of listening with their eyes as an audience is. :)
@@brianjones8432 Right Brian!
Cool cool dude...and he didn't have to lick the arse of Sweetwater \m/
Possibly the only thing I could have heard today that would make me think I ought to check out the Dune reboot was learning the GG worked on the soundtrack.
Guthrie is such a treat, he even knows about the Gandalf jokes. Legend.
The cleans sounded great. Then the screaming rock thing appeared and it was harsh, brittle and terrible.
I understand the need for small and light rigs due to logistics, economy and so on, but mate....that solosound.... Not good.
The rumor says the guy is still standing there since then waiting for the strange things Guthrie promised to demonstrate
He is like Gandalf of guitar, a true wizard
too short, i want more sound demos, that rig sounded great from the bit i heard!
The more techical and busy the the playing, the less important the tone is, so it's not surprised that so many technical players are going this way.
It has nothing to do with how busy or technical the music is. It's all just a matter of how good the Amp modeling is now. And Fractal has nailed it. Guys like Neil schon from Journey, Phil Collin and Viv from Deff Leppard are all using essentially this same rig in arenas and stadiums as well. You can't beat being able to carry around this kind of versatility in tone, and you can't match the consistency with tube amps.
Guthrie joined the Dark Side... Welcome!
I’ve been on the FM9 waiting list for quite some time- after 50 some years of gigging with a 2/12 amp and a bunch of pedals, I really want to create new sounds. More and more times, the sound man at gigs that provide pa and a sound man find my guitar just too loud and hard to control
The problem is the sound guy. And the venue. And the band. Do what i do. Stay home and play tube amps alone in the basement. Best tone of my life
I would love to see a segment from Guthrie about how he programmed his amp sounds. Things sound killer here and he always has a solid take on dialing shit in
Right? To me it looks like he really spends a lot of time playing and creating patches
We need Arquetype Govan!! Jejeje
Do not take him for some conjurer of cheap tricks. 😜
Where are the promised Gandalf jokes? The video has been up for almost an hour!
i slept in!
Gandalf sounds good Guthrie. Not just for your hair, but because you are truly a wizard
... And new jeans as well. Crazy times. 😱
About time! 😉
Everyone else is switching and there's little legitimate reason not to.
Mayer, Metallica, Petrucci, Neal Schon, Def Leppard, and just about every Worship artist on Earth.
Light, easy to carry. Sounds just as good, if not better. Reamping's a breeze; recording.
Anyone who wants to carry a 70lb amp, cab, pedalboard, cables, etc, for the load in/out, be my guest.
I like carrying an entire stadium rig in one trip. Technology always wins in the end though there will be holdouts who swear by their audio religion.
Wow, the stage is so clean.
EXCELLENT - Finally something new from the best guitarist on planet earth!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guthrie Govan is a very slim guy, isn't he...?
I really hope he is eating and drinking enough.
CHEERS.
Guthrie must have gotten on the waiting list early. 😁
The fact it's Guthrie - that, and his work with Mr Zimmer (no less) would be more than enough to put him to the top of the queue. Think of the publicity fractal can now use. As he said, he's doing this purely because this was his setup on the Zimmer tour - it worked there so he's happy to test it here (some fans will object). Mark Knopfler has also just gone digital too (uses Kemper - so not true digital...uses real amp 'snapshots'). Me? - I'm old school, and there's still too much of a difference - you can't beat standing on stage in front of a good tube amp cranked....food for the soul. That Guthrie will use real amps for his next album tells you where his preferences lie.
@@ChrisM541👍 I fully agree... and of course was kidding about the waiting list as any company would want Guthrie using their stuff if he would choose to. Real amps are awesome. They are what all these digital amps are mimicking after all, but the convenience and versatility and minimal tradeoff for "feel" is what we each have to weigh for our own applications. I love my real amps but my modelers make more sense a lot of the time.
@@ChrisM541 I'd guess another factor here is that when you are a professional touring musician, but not a big enough act to have a road crew that moves all your stuff around for you, then getting your entire rig shrunk down to the point where you can carry all of it onto a flight without checking any luggage is a huge deal. He can literally carry his entire rig around in a double gig bag for his guitars that he carries like a backpack and a separate little hand bag for his FM9 and expression pedal. That's hugely useful for someone like him.
Guthrie is the man!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guthrie for World President!
3:15 since a very old Guthrie's video where he shows his "Leslie" attempt, Ive always wanted to learn this style of playing but I cannot find many examples. Can anyone help me to find more examples of this style?
And this is gonna be the future of rig rundows :D
Guthrie is how I think a musician should be. Takes his craft but not himself seriously. Guy is really a phenomenon. Love the aristocrats such mind numbing great musicians. I can listen to this guy talk for hours....& I’m a bass player lol.
Guthrie can do whatever the f*ck he wants. Gandalf hath no problem dealing with trolls.
As technology gets better and we get older.........
100 watt heads and full stacks.......are not practical
Especially in small clubs
Guthrie the White, Guthrie told me to do it.
I'd be halfway convinced that Guthrie is a hoax put on by Steve Coogan as a side project between gigs if it weren't for the fact that people have seen him play, myself included.
He's just on another level
My admiration for this wonderful human being is always growing. I love listening to him open his world of perception to us through his eloquently crafted words and compositions. What lucky souls we are to live concurrently with such a marvel!
Guthrie could play thru a line 6 spider and sound better than 99.9% of guitarist on the planet. Dude is on a different level.
As good as his playing is, he's become a great personality more than ever. I think he needs to do more 'podcasts & talkshows' based around guitar but with no guitar in his hands. He is hilarious!
I'm not a fan of digital. And while Guthrie can rightly be proud of emulating bagpipes, he's not the first. I believe Angus Young has done this, and Big Country's Stuart Adamson was certainly doing it forty years ago: ua-cam.com/video/tM9I6ZtpThM/v-deo.html, and lets not forget that the motorcycle on Bat Out Of Hell was actually Todd Rundgren, on a guitar: ua-cam.com/video/Thp8-MI7hyE/v-deo.html.
I need Guthrie Govan, Mikael Akerfeldt and Devin Townsend in a room together, talking about music. 😂
A lot of cats are doing this now and, from what I've heard, they are getting great results! Whatever is easier.
In the band I switched to digital (HELIX) just because of simplicity..I mean..you walk on stage, place the Helix, use one cable for the FOH, plug your guitar...and you are good to go...no cab, amp board, cable dance..setup takes 2 Minutes
I love my Helix. And I have always been into tube amps. But they stay at home and I save my energy.
@@StratsRUs yeah my wall of amps stays safe in my studio..lol. And if the Helix is set up correctly it just sounds easily 98% like the "real deal"

More Catweasel than Gandalf, which I’m sure Guthrie would appreciate.
Ill bet if you put amps behind him and used the Axe fx everybody would say it sounds great
I’ve owned a high end modeler for many years but keep it in my studio. I switched to a Headrush Gigboard for gigs and it makes everything much easier. The sounds are more than good enough and setup is easy. I was spending too much time switching programs while performing. The audience doesn’t care about the gear. If you’re playing blues then a tube amp is perfect but if you’re playing a variety of styles a modeler will open up new sonic opportunities.
ultimate respect for guthrie work and humbleness. love how he dedicates to every piece of his craft.
It would be nice to know what he eats instead and how he does it with such a skeletal body to support the weight of a guitar for the whole concert. This is a real magician's mystery, not how he plays, where he plays and what equipment he plays with. Still, he remains one of my favourite guitarists.

I like the "warm sloshing milk" before the screaming rock....
”The screamin rock thing”really sounds like shit Guthrie come on!Even the clean sounds are horrible. You need a real amp to push some air in to a microphone. And the fake cabs simulator doesn’t anything like the real thing. You don’t have to carry 6 Marshall cabs and 12 heads to get a huge/good sound.Get a small Fender hot rod deluxe combo like the Fender ML and that’s all you need. The promoters can always rent one and fly with your effects.
