We learn to speak before we learn to read. We learn the complexities of language before we learn anything about tense, gender, or conjugation. This kid "speaks" music. Learning to read will only improve his understanding of the language and allow him to become a greater musician. Outstanding!!!

As a music educator, I can NOT STRESS ENOUGH how important this step is for you, Jayden. At this juncture, learn everything now - while your mind is fresh. Too many church musicians give up on reading because they are LAZY and do not want to read. I am SO HAPPY that your mom is pushing you to learn to read. When you become a teenager, you will be able to walk into any church and name your price because you will have both the abilities to read what is in front of you AND to play what you hear!

I agree with you 100% but you got to tell the teacher that she need to focus ONLY on teaching him how to read and not waste her time on other stuff because I think he got the other stuff down packed, Let's be honest-this little boy is extremely talented and I think he's better than the teacher in this video in my opinion!!!

    • @lindafreeplayqueen

LAZY? I can read music but I can't play by ear so to call someone lazy because they can't grasp everything is insulting. I've found musicians who play by ear get more gigs because a note player can't play everything. I'd rather play by ear if I had a choice.

@@lindafreeplayqueen I play the piano by ear and can't read a lick of piano sheet music. However, I wish I could read piano music to enhance my chord vocabulary. But, every church gig I got came from me playing basic chords by the ear. And I live in Mississippi. And I play the majority of songs in MAJOR chords only.

If i was his teacher and he walked in playing that I would be like, "...dang... I'm glad i know how to READ music. At least I got that...."

its amazing, to do both, i play by ear but i also took formal lessons for years in classical music but got the big head and thought i didnt need them. i took lessons for 11 years and its been 10 years since i have sat down and read music. needless to say i can no longer read. i make great money playing by ear but if only i was a double combo reading music, hopefully he sticks qith it.

no question...Hayden is very mature musically for his age, but he needs to understand what he's doing too. I've dealt with too many musicians that never learned to read, and inevitably they hit a brick wall, and that's as far as they can go. Jayden is 16 now, and he's playing amazingly well....far better than I'll ever be able to play, and I've got him by 40 years.

The great thing here is that Jayden has a foundation of chord progression. Having structured lessons are indeed useful (though I imagine this might become tiresome if the talent does not match his). An important question is what does Jayden want to do with his talent. Another is which direction does his parents desire to see his talent blossom? After learning some technical music language, he could easily be directing a band. Its great to see this gift in someone so young.

Being able to read music is even more assurance and insurance for him in being able to cover all aspects of music. Some times one will not have a chance to hear something first in order to play it. If u r in a situation where some one brings u sheet music to be played on the spot and a lot of jobs criteria is that one be able to sight read, as they say ''two heads under the hat is better than one'' for the more you know the more you can profit, for one can never be to educated on any subject.

Will have to agree and at the same time disagree. Learning to read is important and it will get him respect to a degree but this kid will go places regardless of what musical path he takes. When its all said and done, you have to be able to throw down. This kid does just that. Look at the teachers reaction. She first shook her head in disbelief, then she nodded with approval. This kid speaks everyones language. The ability to do that will not come from sheet music.

True statement.... When I was 7or 8 years old and the Michael Keaton, Kim basinger version of Batman Came out with Jack Nicholson as the jocker. Prince scored the movie. Does anyone remember scandalous?? I remember getting a keyboard that Christmas and trying to learn the them song on the strings mode. It just came to me out of the sky like a gift from God. It's like my fingers already knew where to go. I was amazed myself even though I was playing it. I never looked back and the more I played the more complicated sequences I was able to play. But to become chic corea, art Tatum, Herbie Hancock and the greatest of all time oscar Peterson it not only takes the gift but countless hours of practice. You can't have the gift and not practice as well as you can practice until you turn blue in the face if you don't have the gift you're just waiting time hoping and wishing 😬🙏 it's Strickly God given go pray about it 😁

The look on his face at the end is like are you serious? Don't take a kid like that to just any teacher. He needs a master, someone who can stretch him. If he wants to read music he should be at a conservatory, or otherwise under a gospel or jazz master. He could easily audition into a program and get scholarships to learn for free.

See this is the good side to not knowing how to read. There is nothing that tells him that a particular chord does not fit. I can read but my left hand is not that good. OMG.

THEIR IS NOTING WRONG WITH PLAYING BY EAR BECAUSE THAT IS A GOD GIFT ONLY. READING MUSIC IS OK BUT IT'S NOT THE DEAL BREAKER AT ALL IN MUSIC.IT'S ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT PLAY BY EAR THAT MAKES A GREAT LIVING.JUST KNOW NOTHING BEAT GOD GIFT EVER.I HATE WHEN PEOPLE THINK THAT YOU HAVE TO READ MUSIC 2 BE THE BEST WHEN GOD ALREADY BLESS YOU 2 PLAY ALL THAT YOU HEAR IN THE NAME OF JESUS.PLEASE DONT TRY 2 MAKE IT BE THAT HE WILL NOT HAVE A GREAT LIFE IF HE DON'T KNOW HOW 2 READ MUSIC.GOD GIFT IS THE BEST.
