Sounds like head crash (collision of the extruder), if your print bed isn’t level and that nozzle tip runs into the glass it’s common to shatter them (user error in calibration). So don’t just replace it, check the level was of the bed or you’ll end up doing this again every week. Ironically had to buy a new glass plate for my machine today, the part was really stuck on and me being stupid thought I’d manhandle it off, nope! It’s still stuck on that chunk of the glass, haha! I think that’s only the 2nd or 3rd glass bed I’ve broken but ironic it broke like the day before you wrote this comment. It cost me $3 at Lowe’s for a cut 8x8.5 inch plate (anything 10x12 or below is $3, cutting charge is free), so if you break another one because it does happen, you can buy replacements pretty cheap locally (I guess hazard of shipping a single piece is really high so they have to quadruple the price from what I’ve seen).

But none of the files I sliced had any similar issues. I also took issue to there being on strain relief. Being that it uses mains voltage I think it's that much more of a concern. I love your videos. I am upgrading my 2018 Tevo printer to a Zesty Nimble direct drive setup. I am stuck on the section on how to adjust the Vref values on the stepper motor ic chips. There is hardly any information on this particular model. Do you adjust the Vref values from the pots or is this model software selectable for the Vref voltages?
well done mate!!!! congrats :), I just bought a tevo tornado, and I want to change the diameter nozzle to 0.8mm so I eager to see your video about it. Again excellent job and keep going!!!
Thanks Pablo. I did a lot of the ground work for this mod during my review period so it shouldn't be too much trouble to generate the video. Still have to tweak the slicer settings a bit.
My guess is that they will continue to ship the green ones (old version)out until there are no more in stock and then ship out the newer gold versions....They should reduce the price of the older version and sell the newer version for the going price...just my 2 cents....
Word has it that Tevo shipped the last of the old ones some months ago, but some of the vendors stocked up and are now liquidating the old ones but some are claiming that they are the 2018 versions. This may be because they switched over to making the new versions after the Chinese New Year which was sometime in February so technically the old spec ones made in January are 2018 machines but it's misleading to consumers. I consider this to be a vendor issue and not a Tevo issue.
Great review Michael. Although I'm not planning on getting the Tornado, you have raised some excelent points that I'm planning on doing with the CR-10s which should be the same (or adaptable). Transfer the electronics to the base, so looking forward to your video on that. Planning to get and extra complete hotend and install a 0.8mm nozzle (and a Noctua fan) which should make it relatively easy to swap between them. Ideally I would like to convert my CR-10s to be 24v, but I think that might be a bit overkill, so I'm thinking it may be better to install a 240v (UK) bed heater. Just remembered, I have a spare genuine E3D Titan extruder, so probably will install that too, perhaps the E3D hotend too when I find/design a suitable mount. Regarding the BL Touch install, the dupont plugs weren't very secure, so I've ordered some JST's just to be sure, still waiting for the EZABL. On that note, I would like to configure the standard Marlin firmware for both the BL Touch and the EZABL, so will have a search for info on both. Keep up the great work mate, I really appreciate it.
Hi spike, I assume the CR-10S has a fatter PSU because it powers the bed. THe Tornado one is quite streamlined as it only powers the nozzle. I'mhoping to fit everything under the bed without rising the frame but that might be too hard. If it helps with th BLtouch I have a video that goes through the settings on a version of Marlin closer to vanilla: ua-cam.com/video/BV11-VOQjMc/v-deo.html
I have heard a few have broken the build surface on this new model, you think that was build surface issue or operator error. To those looking to buy the 2018 model on eBay be aware that some of the Chinese sellers are using "2018 Tevo Tornado" for the search benefits when they are in fact selling the old version. I just had that happen.
Michael, Please don't use paper to level the bed use a set of feeler gauges and pick the distance from bed to nozzle you want. As using paper I assume you are expecting 0.1mm or 0.004" which should be a pretty standard size. However, one set of gauges will be good for 100's and more cycles and should probably not cost more than a couple AUS $ and will be so much easier in the long run. If you ever need to adjust the distance on anything else then you will already have a set. Sure a bigger print volume but what are print times like?
Hi Dominic, I start with paper but then do a live adjustment for the next print after. Print time get long pretty quick. A model scaled twice the length is four times the volume. Other people are more patient than me, that's why I'm going to fit the large nozzle.
Michael, You have to customise yet your cura profile/slicing etc to allow for the larger nozzles? Can the extruder (wheel especially, keep up with that much 1.75mm filament out and retract on faster prints. Sure you do but watch out for filament detritus about the extruder. I'm curious as that is why I stuck with 3mm on what was a K8200 as the sheer volumes of plastic that needed to be printed and 3mm worked better? Linear advance at speed has some interesting effects. 1.75mm I ended up with lattice walls and not solid ones as the layers laid down with not thick enough as the extruder couldn't keep up, I thought it was skipping until I looked at what was printed under a microscope. Effects with 1mm nozzle are even more interesting! On Ender 3 usable limit seems to be 0.6mm and 80mm/sec on thinner walls I don't have a Tevo to test it on.
Still 1.75mm filament but I did have to slow down the feedrate and retraction speed to stop it stripping filament. It added print time but was still stupidly fast compared to the 0.4mm nozzle.
hoping you could respond. New to printing, received a tornado from a friend, that same black gold version. Been having alot of issues with adhesion, seemed to be fixed with hairspray, which is messy and a paint to remove prints. My prints have alot of stringing and layers are poorly formed without any good structural integrity. Ill use 40 infill in cura and still things just dont look "solid" the way they do on these videos. Im using amazon basics pla which was given to me with the printer, everything else is stock, I already cleaned the extruder. Any recommendations?
Yes, the hardware is ready, but I'm trying to finish the silly string tank first. Hopefully not too long. I don't expect it to be complicated compared to the tank.
Hey Michael, I'm really on the fence about this printer. On one hand I've heard that it has the salmon skin issue with prints (or at least the 2017 version does) and the smoother board solution could no longer be implemented on newer units. My second issue is that I've heard this printer's wiring setup is extremely dangerous as the main voltage line is not grounded at all. Did they fix this in the 2018 version or is it still a hazard? And lastly, I see the 4 screws on each corner of the bed and I'm wonder if they are included in the "300 x 300 mm" surface that you can print on or if the extruder head can't actually reach that part of the plate? Thanks for the great review though!
Thanks for watching and commenting. I had TL smoothers ready to go but didn'tneed them. No surface artefacts at all with this printer in my testing so far. I can confirm that the main power supply from the wall is earthed. Can't comment on earlier versions than this. After adding strain relief to the bed wires, it's not a bad idea to add additional earthing cables from the main and bed frames back to the control box. I'll be covering all of this in a video this week. You can decide if you think it is too much trouble. Screws are outside the printing area by a little bit. In the video when I show the LED logo box printing, that illustrates the full 300x300 bed area.
That depends on your power of self suggestion. I'm not good at self suggestion and generally weak in believing. Therefore two different types of smoothers had no effect on my old Tornado model and they probably wouldn't have an effect on the new one either.
Does "gave up the Ghost" mean the SD card corrupted and is unusable? Great Review You are quickly becoming my go to reviewer, plus your additional content is A+
What is the difference between this one and the green one they have on their site now? I can buy one of these for 250 but the green one is 340 wanted to know why
My test print was a different color than what filament was in the nozzle, I don't really think they are honest about it... Also I was missing a screw to screw the 2 main frame pieces together.
Hi, I wanted to ask you something, is it better for you to buy the printer from the Tevo store or on the Internet? Thanks so much! congratulations for the channel ....
I bought the Tornado from their store, I got very good customer support. I've heard of people buying from third parties recieving horrible support and service.
Thanks x the answer, in your case the shipment was long and you paid the customs fees? then you think this Tevo Tornato is fine or with the same price I recommend another 3D printer? Thanks so much!
I love my tornado already. Can use a few cheap upgrades but runs like a champ, it's basically a better and cheaper CR-10. In my case, I bought it off the official taobao store, however the international warehouse across the china - hong kong border did not accept the package, the support was very helpful assisting me to get it reshipped directly to me without using the warehouse. 24 hours after it was reshipped I recieved it.
Great video. I'm shopping for a new 3D printer, so this helps a lot. I have a slightly unrelated question though, does anyone have experience with the Geeetech A20 (not the dual extruder A20M)? I have been searching for reviews on this printer, but haven't had any luck. I like the price point for the A20 and it has a fairly good size build volume. I just don't know how it would compare to something like the Tevo.
Went to the link. A little iffy... They say ship color may vary and show a green older version in the box. Which one are they shipping??? Really want one but don't want stuck with the older version. Thank
@@TeachingTech I am in the process of working it out. So far they claim they ship which ever is in stock and feel color is irrelevant. I explained the one advertised on their site has many significant improvements. Will keep you updated. Thanks Larry

@@TeachingTech very true but the water warms up pretty quick and that's what helps remove the print you can also use a can of compressed air upside down which leaves no actual moisture. Because this is tempered glass it's much more difficult to crack even under Heating elements. My bad never goes beyond 60 degrees Celsius so it seems to be perfectly fine every time
Very nice helpfull video! I want to buy my first 3D printer and looking at the two printers you own; Tornado (~€290) vs Ender 3 (~€155). Still doubting though.... Have you ever thought about adding a laser (for cutting purposes) to one of the printers?
If you have the extra coin, go the Tevo Tornado. Please see my strain relief follow up video though. They are very similar machines, but the Tevo is bigger, has a better mainboard and has the very fast heating bed.
@@TeachingTech i'm struggling with this same question. It's my first printer and will use it with the kids to learn 3d design. The Ender 3 looks more straight forward out of the box, but the Tevo more advanced. Worried specifically about the glass adhesion with prints being an issue.
Awesome review,, was the .8mm upgrade a simple nozzle/ filament change and changing the print setting to .8 filament in the slicer?? or did you need to do custom firmware? also did you instal the stepper dampers before all the test prints in this review? also how would you rate the Tevo quality wise vs the Cocoon apart from the obvious avantage of a bigger build area ? im looking at upgrading my cocoon to Tornado or even Nereus ?
This review is not for the new user. This printer is not for the new user, or for someone who is not going to go full in. If you dont have time to learn how to change gcode, or think you can learn it on the go, this in NOT the printer for you. Tevo's is concept of Product support is a Facebook group that is would be more appropriately titled "UPgrade and MOdify your Tevo Tornado." The most helpful advice I received was "be patient, you'll get it eventually". This isnt my first printer. Stay away from the Tornado unless you are willing to spend the hour needed to strip the build tack cover from the glass. You need to be willing to put up with lousy prints with any printer at first, but you have to because you have to "print" axis supports according to the support group. Save your time buy something with REAL customer support. Like the CTC Bizer, the Tornado is simply a clone of a better brand, although my Bizer was friendlier.
What’s the point to have a nice looking bed which needs to be always taped? Also the main voltage on the bed without proper strain relief and safe connection is highly dangerous. I wouldn’t recommend anybody to buy such a thing.
For PLA, it works perfectly as bare glass. Also, there are other common options, such as hairspray or gluestick, that are very common for the CR-10. This is a normal situation and therefore not fair to consider to Tornado problem. It would be negligent of me to recommend the printer without mentioning the strain relief, so I made it clear it would be my first mod. I fiited this: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2748197/ yeaterday. It will be covered in a video this week and this link is now in the video description.
I understand your point. But I think we are past that point where 3D printers are being sold unsafe at the first place. Doesn't matter if it's lack of security options in the firmware, naked main voltage on power supplies or cables/connections which are always moving and are known to break without any security. I wouldn't buy/give such a printer to my sun because I know it's a time bomb. And you can't rely on that any self made mod make it safe (maybe safer, yes). At the end you're saying by using this mod it's perfectly safe. But it's not! I had already many broken bed cables and I know there are ton's of reasons why it happened. It's like recommending an unsafe microwave and saying "it's a good and safe microwave unless you use it in a full metal case". I like your channel and watch it for a long time already. I just think such a live threatening security things need to be more outlined and pointed out. Otherwise I can see a next horror story in the news about 14 year old boy and the dangerous 3D printer.
Hopefully you agree my covering the fix in my coming video is up to scratch. I think after Angus and Joel made the videos bagging the CR-X manufacturers might do a bit more in house testing from now on.
I can't, doesn't matter how good you will do the fix. Working with a main voltage (240V in some countries) is dangerous and should be done only by certified technicians. It should be by design safe (special cables, special connectors and safety features) and this design need to be certified safe. There are regulations for that for good reasons. By suggesting doing that fix and make it look safe afterwards you're putting yourself in a position where you can be sued for that if something happens. I'm not sure where you live but in Europe and USA that can happen very fast especially because you're a public person. Just an example: Someone inexperienced does this fix on your advice and did it wrong. During operation of x hours, the cable ties rub on the cable and expose them. Unlucky guy reach out at the back of the bed (for whatever reason) and get's shocked, heart stop beating. But he told one day before to his family how great the printer works now after all the great mods being done and what a great guy Michael from Teaching Tech is who provided all this guides. So please don't make this mistake and include a disclaimer and all the legal stuff if you really think it's a good idea and you would recommend to buy/use this printer to your relatives.
You make some good points, I appreciate it. I feel like me making a video to make the printer safer will have far more potential benefit than not making it and having existing owners use the printer as standard. You have convinced me to have some prominent warnings and disclaimers, thank you.
I ordered from the link you provided, they guranteed me a black and gold one but sent me the crappy green one. Dont put your name out for them they are ripping people off with the bait and switch! I am pissed off!

Hi Michael, Ah yes, the PSU may well be a bit fat on the CR-10, I'll wait to see your video. Thanks for the link, another superb video.
No tevo's red or green sticker?
Nice! It took me about 2 hours and alot of aceton when I removed iy
I like the look of the new much better too.
It seems really tough to me. Do you know any details on how they broke it? Thanks for the heads up on shonky ebay vendors.
It was on the FB Tevo Tornado users/owner group and the person that reported it says he was just adjusting the bed level.
That sounds like it had a crack all along. Mine seems very, very tough, like a stove cook top.
Hi, are you still working on the "All-in-one" mod? Where the control box is underneath the printer itself?
Been staring at videos like this while i wait for the FedEx folks. Looks like a good purchase!
Please watch the follow up on fixing the wiring, it's important.
@@TeachingTech Link?
Did this model needs Smoothers to resolve salmon trouble or they correct on this 2018 version?
Had zero surface artefacts which surprised me so I guess it is resolved.
Just got. i’ll be waiting for must have mods for this 2018 version. Thank you
just swap out the drivers for TMC. I didn't notice any artifacts before or after upgrading.
Gianfranco Panico Still need smoothers
That depends on your power of self suggestion. I'm not good at self suggestion and generally weak in believing. Therefore two different types of smoothers had no effect on my old Tornado model and they probably wouldn't have an effect on the new one either.
hello. Do you use any glue, spray or blue tape to print PLA ? O you just print on glass directly ? Thank you
Does "gave up the Ghost" mean the SD card corrupted and is unusable? Great Review You are quickly becoming my go to reviewer, plus your additional content is A+
SD card stopped being detected by my PC or the printer. Not even an option to format. Thanks for the kind words :)
I would think direct so you can get better customer support if any issues arise (not that I had any).
I bought the Tornado from their store, I got very good customer support. I've heard of people buying from third parties recieving horrible support and service.
Yes, perfect example.
My extruder is clicking during like the raft and first layer, what can I do to correct this? Thanks!
Sounds like too close to the bed, nozzle opening doesn't have ough room for extruded filament.
Yes you were right. I leveled the bed again with less tension and WOW filament is laying down and no click! Thanks!
Nice printing!
I haven't used one sorry. Maybe join a Geeetech group and search there.
What is the value of Vref tmc2100 in the extruder in the tevo tornado? Thanks
Have you tried to dissolve some ABS in acetone to make your print stick on the bed?
i can print on the tornado with tpu very nicely
did you ever make this an all in one unit and relocate that control box? this is something I very much would like to do and see done!
Video with all upgrades that you made?
So far I've had a few follow ups: bug nozzle, cable strain relief and grounding, cooling duct. All in one is more long term.
Went to the link. A little iffy... They say ship color may vary and show a green older version in the box. Which one are they shipping??? Really want one but don't want stuck with the older version. Thank
That is the link Tevo gave me. When I follow it I see the gold one..? Perhaps contact them first to make sure.
Just got the 2018 model. It's the old green model and not the one you show...
Bait and switch!
Where did you buy it from? If it's from the link Tevo gave me that has gold version pics, you should complain.
@@TeachingTech I am in the process of working it out. So far they claim they ship which ever is in stock and feel color is irrelevant. I explained the one advertised on their site has many significant improvements.
Will keep you updated.
Thanks Larry
@@luckylarry5112 you will have to let us know. Before seeing this video I didnt know an updated version existed, I now know it does but how do we get ahold of one now lol.
I have this printer.simply spray a little water on the bottom of the print and it removes instantly.(cold water)
If the bed is quite hot, be careful not to crack the glass!
@@TeachingTech very true but the water warms up pretty quick and that's what helps remove the print you can also use a can of compressed air upside down which leaves no actual moisture. Because this is tempered glass it's much more difficult to crack even under Heating elements. My bad never goes beyond 60 degrees Celsius so it seems to be perfectly fine every time
It doesn't have to be a lot just has to be a tiny bit while the glass is still warm
Very nice helpfull video! I want to buy my first 3D printer and looking at the two printers you own; Tornado (~€290) vs Ender 3 (~€155). Still doubting though....
Have you ever thought about adding a laser (for cutting purposes) to one of the printers?
I haven't considered the laser because I already have stand alone laser cutter.
Great video. What is the mainboard that it uses?
Lol I did not finish watching the video when I asked the question. Sorry. Thank you for the great review on the tevo.
No problem and thanks for watching.
I want to start to do villa molding do u recommended this 3d prentar for architecture job
sooooooo where are we at with this all in one design? lol. just curious i sure you are hella busy! thanks for great videos!
the cr has stop and go. Does this one resume after power outage or is it just over? and start over if power out? thx
Thanks for sharing 😀👍
Interesting printer 👍
better the ender 3 or tevo 2018? would be nice to know your opinion
Worried specifically about the glass adhesion with prints being an issue.
which one do you prefer print quality between Ender 3 and tevo tornado?
Tevo doesn't have any moire/salmon skin, but Ender 3 is a bit nicer on the vertical surfaces. Toss of a coin.
My Tornado prints pretty damn flawlessly and I would choose it over the ender 3.
WHERE ISTHE LINK FOR THE DAMPNERS?
Added for your convenience.
Great video. Your Channel is so cool. Congratulations.
Thanks for watching :)
This 3d Printer resume print Can you use it? Or not.
Not supported as standard on this printer.
hi you would know how to configure skr1.3 for tevo
I have the same printer but for the love of Christ I can’t print with it the first layer don’t stick and I have levelled it so many times 😭😭😭
Anyone using PVA with this printer? Trying to figure out the right settings.
Great review :)
Thanks for watching.
Thank you great video :)
Power failure resume Print how to use..
Wrong printer.
Interesseting printer
Thanks for sharing :-)
Great review... ^.^
Thanks for watching.
I ordered from the link you provided, they guranteed me a black and gold one but sent me the crappy green one. Dont put your name out for them they are ripping people off with the bait and switch! I am pissed off!
I'm very upset to hear that, especially if they guaranteed the black and gold. Please insist that they fix this.
You look like you're in a picture frame.
