I'm really enjoying your detailed explorations of the Drascombe Lugger, the detailed looks at it, because it's such a legendary boat, having allowed Webb Chiles to sail from California to Hawaii then to the South Pacific and across the Indian Ocean to Saudi Arabia. Your straightforward style is also great -- no intros, no music, no nonsense like that, just your engaging way of exploring the boat.

Many thanks David. I read webb Chile's book across the Pacific where he actually swamped the boat. I figure there are certain books a drascombe owner should read!! A good read none the less. Glad you like the format. It means we get straight to the content and it's also easier for me to get out. Loads more to come.

A mixed day for sure. I'm glad the stuck centreplate was easliy fixed. I hope your back didn't complain too much the following day.
Another keen monarchist here. Too many don't understand the value they have to the country as they only see things in terms of pounds and dollars.
    Nice film, thanks.

Cheers knucker. Yes I was fearing that centreboard would be a problem but all is well!!!

Sometimes things just don't go like you plan, leastwise you can sail. I usually have some nice spring weather by now, but they're calling for more snow. So hurry up and wait!

Very true! especially in sailing. The weather has been particularly funny this season but being on the lake on a boat is enough for me!

You will do better to weather by setting a headsail and main. Keep the mizzen until later. You are doing well!

I agree. If you like to feather, as I do, or point in to the wind when beating in gusts, then the Mizzen will get you into irons quite quickly. I find myself these days furling it entirely when beating. It seems to not make any difference at all to speed. The only time I keep it flying when beating is if i'm on a course where i'm not too close to the wind, say on the sea or in lighter airs where the extra sail area may help a little bit.

Enjoying your videos. When beating l would have expected you could sail closer to the wind, most dinghies can sail up to 40 degrees to wind, some 35 degrees to the wind, thus your tacking angle should be max 80 degrees. Could you point higher by sheeting in main and jib more or does that slow the lugger too much? The main would probably work a bit better if it was tighter to the mast on the luff. This of course is easy for me to say from a distance and l have never sailed a lugger.

If l am sailing my Fireball the main in the exact center of boat when going upwind if boat is not overpowered.

Yes I think I have a lot of tweaking of the sails to do and the more I sail her, the more refined I can sail her. She definitely likes to come off the wind a bit though. Seems more efficient to increase the angle slightly in exchange for a bit of speed.
A lot of lugger guys make a boom, so next season may look in to that too, just to try and get some shape to the sail when beating.

Lots of tweaking to do. I think tying the sail better would help hugely getting the sail flatter, also I do have a system on the horse traveller that can fix the sail into the centre of the boat. Maybe should bring that back again.
