Dude… More videos like this, please!! I think you may have found your niche in YT sailing channels. A few folks have done these videos but this is one of the few of even those that I found to be truly instructional. Very well done!

Very good explanation. I like that this video covers more points than other similar "how to sail" videos. Additionally, it is easy to see how the lines are arranged so for someone like me who is installing all of the running riggings for the first time, can do it much more quickly. Thanks!!
Hands down, thos is the best tutorial without all the lingo like a robot (ASA) and using both the correct and I'VE NEVER SAILED BEFORE lingo. It's great for 1st timers, refresher, or someone that hasn't sailed in 10 years!! THANK YOU FOR THIS. I'LL BE PASSING THIS ALONG!! 🙏❤️🇺🇸⛵️👣👍
I am fascinated about sailing although I have no possibilities to do it. However I started to learn about sailing and watched a lot of videos about sailing techniques. All of them taught me something and maybe added new value to me but this video is the most clear (animation helped a lot) and best for me. Very well explained and fluent. Thank you sir!

This is an awesome instructional video. Best I have seen as it shows not only what to do but how each change affects the yacht. As a newbie to sailing, I needed this and have saved it for future reference. Thank you so much!
Sailor Susie was quiet and obedient avoiding mutiny throughout this voyage! We also learned that a ship has "one" master. We understand how difficult it was for Susie to stay quiet for the duration of this trip who was obviously anxious for some "tacking and jibing" under rough weather.
Great video ! we are about to raise the sails on our little Beneteau Evasion 25 for the first time in the next week or so when we have light winds in Arzal France.. I have only ever been crew on yachts and my wife has never experienced turning the engine off and the peace of sailing..! in the UK we had a motor cruiser for many years, we now live in France and we have finally agreed to learn to sail. luckily Arzal is a dammed river so we dont have to worry about the tide much, the aim is to just getting our girlie moving forward under sail and your video was a great recap on how this is achieved.. lol Thank You very much. I got my Day Skipper last year and have to say this video is perhaps the best I’ve seen at summarizing the basics (leaps and bounds ahead of what I paid for). Well done and thank you - a great refresher.
This is a fantastic video and I hope you do more like it, a la gybing/jibing, heaving to, adjusting sail shape for different conditions, etc. Your diagrams and explanations were far and away better than most so-called sailing how-to videos. PS When I saw Suzie (Susy?) at 14:00 in her sailor outfit (including hat!) I burst out laughing and had to replay that portion to actually hear what you said. She's such a great sport to be willing to be the star of these videos with you!😂
Great vid. Even though I know the basics it was still a joy to watch. Entertaining and informative. I like the little boat with the wind it really helps to be able to visualize the boats angle to the wind as your talking about it.
I like the way you explain things, so I'm a subbie now. lol I have been reading, just reading up on sailing for about 8 years now, but I recently went down to a marina to just see first hand and sure enough, within 10 minutes, I was onboard with a nice couple on their 30 foot O'Day. We have become friends, he just upgraded to a newer 34 foot O'Day and explained to me that until the 30 footer gets sold, I can come down to the marina and sail it everyday if I want....woo hoo. I'm writing my pleasure craft license tomorrow, and I'm learning as much as I can about navigation along my coastline of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada...but in reality, I probably won't sail out of the harbour until someone tells me I have gained enough helm time. We do have a huge harbour here in Halifax, it's something like the third deepest no ice harbour in North America, ( I won't put the deed to the ranch on that comment)...just sayin' One of my concerns, only because I'm not educated int his yet is ... FOG, there is a lot of fog on this East Coast and this 30 footer has no electronics to guide me, so I will have to learn how to read the weather so I don't get caught out there with no visibility.
Great story! The best way to avoid trouble is not to be in the fog at all... it's scary. At least have AIS and don't be where larger ships would be. It's not worth it. We've been in fog twice and I would say we just got lucky but it's not worth it.
For gybing, I typically take my main back to center, perform the gybe and then let it back out again. Only time that gets hairy is during high winds, where I might opt to tack instead and head back down. Good primer, bookmarked for my novice sailing friends who want to learn!!!!
Thanks and I will try to bring the main to center and then gybe. I will usually bring in the main as the boat turns and then let it back out as I got through the turn, but that only works because my wife is handling the genoa. If I was alone I could not do that.
Chef Phil here again. Ok, this was a great video Jason and Susy! I'm a novice and have been following you guys for a few months now. The only thing I've ever sailed myself was on sunfish back when I was in the Boy Scouts many years ago on a freshwater lake. I would love to buy a sailboat and learn how to sail with my wife. As I explained before we're from Pennsylvania and have been thinking about possibly moving down to Florida. You guys are a great team working together and made a very, concise, helpful and easy to understand video for beginners. I was a little concerned because I'm 53 and was thinking I was, perhaps, a bit old to do this but I was wrong. This looks like great fun and you just advanced my knowledge tenfold! Your video makes me want to sail even more! Thanks again for all the careful thought and time you put into this video. Appreciated you teaching all the proper terms and names concerning the different parts of the boat and equipment. I've saved it so I can watch it many times. Take care and God bless!

I haven't gone back and watched all your other videos but I do remember seeing a couple featuring your other boat. I thought that you and your wife had sailed a little before that. My wife and I are coming back to the USA next week from the Philippines. Been here almost 3 years now all through the covid mess. Looking forward to getting settled, get back to my catering business and hopefully taking a sailing course next spring/summer. Since we live in PA it's gonna be a little cold now lol and my wife is from the Philippines so she'll have to get over the shock of cold weather 😂. That's three reasons to possibly make the move to Florida: boating almost all year, warmer weather and a great governor/red state! 👍👍

I was taught to help me remember port & starboard and color of lights. It also help on Naval vessels which direction you travel the gang ways or walkways to keep from impeding foot traffic during drills. Port is red and so is port wine, so pore it forward hence color & direction. Starboard is stumble aft hence direction and this has to be green since port is red. So, at night if I see the running lights and red is to my right and green to my left, I can assume you are heading toward me, if it's the other way around, you're most likely heading away. The Bow breaks forward and stern meaning steer is also called the fan tail, a Naval slang for prop.
Did I do that? LOL... whoops.. my mistake was that I connected the sail graphic to the mast instead of the bow... too late now... only watched it so many times I never want to see it again LOL Thanks for seeing that!

This is great! I sailed Topaz M's so 20+ foot boat seems daunting but this cleared up what all the lines are for and the proper names. And once you know what it's called it becomes a lot easier to look it up :)

Ok, I'll think about that, thanks. I think I'm good at docking but it's scary as hell in a sailboat compared to the power boat! I liken it to driving a car on ice.

Question is the jib always smaller? Or does it have a special location on the boat? Thank you again for your video. Love and Light.
Good vid! However bringing the main to the other to sail wing on wing side is like an "accidental jib". It is "safer" to bring the Genoa on the other side especially when you don't jib. Normally is down wind the fastest course ( wing on wing offers the biggest sail area to the wind) for a boat and less prone to get seasick since the wind and the waves come behind you and not from the side. Please keep up you great work!
Thanks. A tail wind is my least favorite since the boat lacks stability and tends to wander down waves. Down wind is the worst point of sail from a sea sickness point of view (for us). There have been exceptions to this, like on very calm down wind days.
seems easy but bet it is a lot of work and constantly monitoring the wind, etc. But basically this would work for any size monohull? would it be the same for a cat?

Nicely explained Jason Just one mishap your diagram for the whisker pole should have been on the genoa not the main.

Good vid! However bringing the main to the other to sail wing on wing side is like an "accidental jib". It is "safer" to bring the Genoa on the other side especially when you don't jib. Normally is down wind the fastest course ( wing on wing offers the biggest sail area to the wind) for a boat and less prone to get seasick since the wind and the waves come behind you and not from the side. Please keep up you great work!
Thanks. A tail wind is my least favorite since the boat lacks stability and tends to wander down waves. Down wind is the worst point of sail from a sea sickness point of view (for us). There have been exceptions to this, like on very calm down wind days.

FYI, at 6:40 you have port and starboard tack on the wrong sides. Important not to get that mixed up!

seems easy but bet it is a lot of work and constantly monitoring the wind, etc. But basically this would work for any size monohull? would it be the same for a cat?
