Sailing With Dave
United Kingdom
Приєднався 12 лис 2021
This is how I learnt to sail from the very beginning to the present day.
My names Dave and I've always wanted to sail and the story starts in season 1 when I finally I got the chance in the summer of 2020 when I found my first £500 little wooden boat. "Mochyn Du" or "Black Pig" in English is her name and she's an 11 foot, 1984 wooden Mirror Dinghy and she's a beauty! Season 1 is all about Mochyn Du, how she taught me to sail and all the little projects and improvements I made to her. I hope you Mirror Dinghy fans will find these videos useful.
From here I progress, sailing and finding various new boats including a folding seahopper, a Drascombe Lugger and even a Biluta Packraft as I try to improve my sailing skills and prepare to go on wider adventures cruising around the UK.
There's no £100K Catamarans here, just me, my old and cheap boats, the beautiful UK waters and my sailing and DIY skills.
It's never too later to follow your dreams, so come with me as I embark on mine.

A New PFD For Dinghy Cruising
I've been really excvited for this. Its a new PFD but with a difference.
My old one has worked great for the past 2 years, but its aging a tad and i'm finding it's too small and has too little storage.
The one is the NRS Chinook Offshore and it has pockets, loops, attachment points everywhere. Its also the right size and i'm really please dwith it.
I'll do a review after i've worn it a bit but this at least gives you a decent overview of it.
Enjoy!

Why Drascombe Lugger Rudder Bearings Don't Fit!
Переглядів 2909 годин тому
Just a quickie today. I got home after being at Bala and got the old and new rudder bearings out and compared them. Sure enough the new ones are very different to the old ones and I can now see what I have to do. Hope this one helps someone out there! 🌐 My new website: sailingwithdave.com ❤️ Comments are open, ask anything you want in the comments section! 📢 If you enjoyed this video, then plea...
Setting Up My Drascombe Lugger Mooring And Checking The Rudder bearings
Переглядів 43116 годин тому
Today was a foul day. There's no ther way to put it. It just rained, and then rained harder!! So raincoat dinned, off we went to get Lulu onto the water! First job was to let her sit and check the newly installed Rudder bearings had been done right. There were no leaks at all, however we did run into a slight issue! Next up we decided to get the mooring strop and buoy setup. Even if we weren't ...

Dinghy Battery Box MK2 - DONE!
Переглядів 16414 днів тому
After charging and testing the new LiFePO4 battery, we get it connected into the new MK2 Battery box and that's it on this project. I have really high hopes for this version of the battery box. It's super light, slides in and out of the boat easily, it's away from any water and it's modular so anything can be quickly connected or disconnected up to it. Lake Bala Is Flooded So I Show You What I carry Onboard My Drascombe Lugger
Переглядів 72721 день тому
We arrive at the lake for a new season....or have we?! The lake's flooded so we can;t get the boat in and on her mooring so we take a look around, check on other boats and then duck in and out of the weather getting the boat ready. I show you what I usually take onboard the boat. I don;t carry much to be honest, but it's there for a reason! Enjoy! 00:00 Picking the boat up 02:01 Checking boats ...
The Last Day At The Boat Yard 2024!
Переглядів 58421 день тому
So, we come to the last day of this long and arduous winter season. I can't lie. It's been a difficult winter. We've had to duck and dive in between the cold and wet weather and even then it's been windy! But we got through it and we're almost ready for the 2024 sailing season. We have a few more tweaks to do but we can do those at Bala. Many thanks for watching and sticking with me through the...

How I Replaced My Drascombe Lugger Rudder Bearings

My Rudder bearing left me off the coast of Anglesey last year with a serious leak that was getting faster by the hour. Who would have thought 2 tiny screws could have caused that!! Use a peace of your webbing and make a crutch strap, or it won't ride up.
What a great convenient life jacket to have, while on your Sinbad Voyages... Practical too... 👍
Very entertaining! I can barely resist to buy one also 😀
Hahahaha love your energy mate, keep it up! Btw thanks for the video
Thank you for this video. I personnaly have "Décathlon PFD". The good things : they are made for the french 50 N registration but, in fact, they have 70 N flotation. They also have a strap to put between you legs to avoid the PFD to go up (as you showed us with your black PFD. The bad thing (for you) : they have no pocket at all...🙂
Looks good Dave but is that a tardis in the back of the room? 😊
Looks like a very good PFD, the designs of these have got a lot better. As you rightly said, if it's not comfortable you'll not wear it. I have a Palm Kola Angler PFD for the fishing kayak. Very similar.
A Wichard Rescue Knife (or similar) could be mounted to the upper left mounting tab. Hope to see you trying the PFD in the water.
It's great that you share your enthusiasm for your new kit, and give a rational explanation of both its function and the reason for your upgrade.
I have also been a Mooring Officer for 8 years with 120 odd swing moorings. Couple of comments on your work. Glad to see you mousing the shackle but therefore not necessary to wrench up the bolt. In the sea it would be hard to undo. Do tuck the wire ends away as they are a finger ripping hazard. Somewhere I guess you have a swivel on the chain, the weak link that needs to be checked. Finally I attach the mooring buoy to the top of the yoke or strop, easier to retrieve and stops it wandering off the mooring and catching someone if it is long. Cheers Dave S
Cheers for the advice David. I check the top chain part periodically, especially where the shackle is attached, but the chain was new when my mooring went in so it's still in good conditions. We have lost a few boats the past few years though, that have broken free. Fortunately they don't get very far. One got stuck on the nearby shore and the other at the top of the lake!! One of the boats has a very long strop and mooring buoy which I have to often negotiate to get out onto the lake, I know what you mean by keeping them shorter and not letting them wander off!!
Hi Dave your detailed lager musings are very entertaining and educational. I did away with the worst aspect of Drascombes after having had three types, by getting a Drascombe Driver. An inboard version with a Transom hung rudder and skegs instead of a drop keel. Being converted to electric power so perfect for shallows.
Many thanks for the comment David. Oh Yes, I think there was one of those for sale about a year ago. Bacially a Lugger but with an inboard engine. Definitely would make for a great shallow waters boat. The rudder on the Lugger is a bit of a pain!!
Hi dave. Is your battery dremal any good. Does the battery run out quickly and wot make is it. Many thanks Paul from Cornwall
Hi Paul. I love my little dremel and its definitely seen some decent use in the 3 or 4 years I have had it. I think the battery lasts a decent amount of time, i've never run out when needed, maybe needed the 2nd battery on high use days. However for me having a battery version is essential due to the remote locations I work in. I could run one off my camper battery but thats a bit awkward. Its a proper "Dremel" brand and you can get all kinds of accessories for it too for cutting circles and routing etc etc. I also have a little Drill press jig that I got for Christmas last year that turns it into a drill press. I use it in the van sometimes!!! I use it a lot more than I realise. When you work out what bits do what then it really is a swiss army knife!!
Everything needs a fettle at first 😊
Definitely on a Drascombe it does!!
Thank you for this video. As you said on your last video (in 2024🙂) ePropulsion can last a quite long time !
Yes, especvially on a lighter boat where you can pootle along quite merrily on 20-30% power.
Can't have too many tools in the workshop. Hopefully you get the bearing sorted without too much trouble.
Cheers Phil. Big job, made all the more difficult with dodgy fitting stuff! I don;t think anything fits right on a Drascombe, part of the "charm"!
you would think drascombe would keep parts standard or is it old spec re the new spec and company
I think Dave's lugger will end up like the Sailor's Knife, it will have had three new handles and four new blades, and be as just as good as the day he bought it when he comes to sell.
Hmmmm, well I have literally never had anything that fits, so this is no exception. The top bearing doesn;t fit at all, but the lower one at least just needs a bit of fettling!
Another useful little lesson on tools I have never used.
season 4 has begun lol great vid
i have always set mooring buoys with rope that is the maximum high tide length, and secured to top of block chain.
I htnk thats what I did last season. Of course no tide on the lake but I attached it to the chain. I thin I like that best.
Hi Dave,... Glad you got out there... Too bad about all that rain, though. You do a great job explaining, setting the bouy connector, thingy... Your story about the windshield, cracks me up though,... Get it? Cracks me up? Bad joke,... I apoligize. It could be serious... Be safe, & keep making your videos ! Take care...😃
Definitely needed to get that crack done and quickly. It ended up almost double the size by the time I got home!!
Thank you for this wet video.🙂 Do you know how long you could sail with you electric motor, slowly as in the video ?
Hi Christophe. If I keep the motor at 300W, about 1/3rd power, then it goes for about 5 or 6 hours. At full power it lasts about 1.5 hours. It's a little underpowered on the Lugger, noit quite getting her up to hull speed, even on a flat lake but its more than enough for a calm day out or getting on the mooring. I wouldn't use it on the sea though. I also have a home made scooter backup battery that works pretty well too, so plenty of battery for a long day out if theres no wind. If you search the channel you should find lots of videos about the ePropulsion outboard. Its particularly good on the Mirror. It'll last all day long!
@@SailingWithDave Thank you for your answer. 5 or 6 hours !!! I am surprise ! (on a good way🙂) In this case, I must think about ePropulsion on my sail and oars little boat (3.90 m, 250 kg) when I'm on the canal which goes all across Brittany.
@@christophe6065 Yes I think if you're careful then you can get that. There's a video where I use the epropulsion on the River Dee. That was about 6 miles and I was 80% the last half. I still had plenty of power left. The trick is to not get seduced into doing hull speed. Its amazing how much power you need to eek out thaose last 0.1 mph's!
Nice to see Lulu afloat again, you are getting better launching and recovering too! 😊
Practise definitely makes perfect and the trailer is now properly tweaked so she comes back on level. The new swinging cradle just took time to get right.
Hi dave, we're has the spray hood gone.
Hi Paul. On the back burner for now. It was a difficult project to get finished. The whole back of it became a bit of a challenge so I basically ran out of time. It's not dead, but just dormant once again for now!
Thanks Dave: could I suggest when your sailing season videos start you put a date in the comments for each video to make it clear what month events happened in. The weather for this video and state of the foliage, then in early spring, are after all the same as now in early winter.
I will have to try and remember! I do put the original date in a field when uploading so I was hoping it would show up somewhere!
@@SailingWithDave It may do and I haven't looked or listened properly. It was just that apart from the fact you were putting the boat in the water and not taking it out (so to speak) everything looked like it was this week.
I usually do lots of faffing about the first time out each season. Everything just gets smoother as the season goes on.
Oh ytes, lots of Faffing going on this season to get everything ready! I think you also get those "not sailed for a while" jitters so you want everything working properly!
You do great stuff 🎉
Thank-you very much Kimberley!
Brill analysis...thank you..🎉 But did you factor in the engine power level. Was it 6hp at full throttle..? Or something less..
Hi Kimberley, The outboard is a 6HP Mariner, but one thing was that the throttle was rarely above 30%, in fact I was surprised at how little throttle we needed to keep going. I guess its hard to work out what HP was being used as the scale of throttle to HP isn't linear. I also have the "Sailpro" propeller, which is better suited to sail boats. I think it gives the boat, almost like, more torque at lower speeds.
Good to see you again, Dave... Hopefully, you never get in a bad situation, on the waters,... just reading, while waiting to be rescued... Keep up your interest, and, I hope you're feeling better,..."Thyroid" 😃
Cheers Marc. Feeling much better now, yes I too hope I never need help on the water but you never know!!
Informative video Dave, I just want to say I've really enjoyed your videos this year, and looking forward to more next year. Keep it up.
Hi Donalh! Many thanks for the kind comment. Still plenty to come and glad you're finding them useful.
I've read the Frank and Margaret Dye adventures which are proper edge of the seat stuff.
I haven't read that book yet but would love to read it, although someone else told me it's the quickest way to be put off the sea!!! Apparently they spend most of their time on the side!! Bit like Webb Chiles and the Lugger where, granted he did cross the pacific ocean, however the Lugger was swamped for half the trip with him keeping afloat in his inflatable for weeks until he could bail the Lugger out. To be inspired often takes someone crazy to push the boundaries though!!
Thank you for this video. On your desk, I saw three little lights (red, green, white). Did you already talk about them ?🙂
Hi Christophe. Yes I did, last year some time, but they are "Adventure Expedition" lights. Right here: www.adventurelights.com/product/guardian-expedition/ Very clever little lights. The batteries last ages, they have a long range and you can flip the batteries over and they flash instead of stay on. I carry them as emergency Navigation and anchor lights, although on a dinghy you rarely need any!! Shoip about for them as the prices varied wildly.
There is a storm coming in, Storm Darragh, and we are goin to get a lot of rain plus 80mph wind. Sorry mate I think I'll stay home no lake for me.😰😰
Good advice, I htink this is the first of a few storms coming too. We're in for another good winter I think!!!
@@SailingWithDave I assume we are none-the-less going to get to enjoy during this winter, the last (wet) summer again vicariously through your adventures. I look forward to it. I swear there are traces of webs growing between my toes.
I love your videos! We have a small sailing dinghy and you have inspired us to do some overnighters on the sea soon! It is a GRP Enterprise, you may have heard of them. 👍
Many thanks for the comment Jago. Yes an Enterprise is the big sister to the Mirror in many ways. Both Jack holt designs and still popular dingies. Alas for me the Mirror was a tickle too small to take cruising but I do have plans to get her out on the sea next season. I sailed her at the end of last season again and forgot how much fun she was!
great watching these vids again what a lovely day that was , almost wants me want to get one myself (again)
Oh yes, takes me back a bit that one, those summer days on the lake were unbeatable. Such a lovely place when the weather's like that!!
Thank-you for sharing. We'll done
Cheers for the comment Tim and glad you liked it. Just watched this video myself as I remember the shackle going overboard. So glad it wasn't the block!!!
Hard to keep all the wiring neat in such a confided box. Jobs a Goodun'
YEah, its a bit of a tangle in there but not much you can do about that in a little box. Should be good.
Looks very professional. Looking forward to seeing it in use. 👍
Here's hoping! I think its tad too low but if it works then i'm happy!
Looks like you got this, Dave...👍
Cheers Marc, yes a lot better than the first one. This should be a lot more waterproof!
Coincidence! I've just been looking this stuff up with a view to expansion in the future. I have solar and battery as a portable back up at home. I know it's significantly more expensive but I use a power station. I would in your case too. It makes life simpler and that's best for a man as simple as me.
So Battery box MK1 used my old "all-in-one" charger but it was flwed really. the connectors rusted up quickly on the sea and as soon as any water got into it, it just failed. I salvaged the battery from it, but the rest was gone. It was a very old power bank, not very big so it wasn't a big loss. You definitely need better connectors that will resits the water and salt.
I just got a job done for the winter in the garden, good feeling isn't it?
yes, especially with the winter we'bve had!
I must have missed something... what did you wish to test with your rudder? Was it the placement of the bronze keeper under the keel ?
I think you;re referring to the new lower rudder bearing that I fitted over the winter. In order to check if it lines up you need to feed the rudder into the 2 bearings and you can;t do that onl the trailer, even if you move the rudder slot back to clear the trailer. I "think" its about right as there are guides in the fibreglass to set the bearing in. but until I test it you don't know! I couldn't do that today as I couldn't get Lulu into the water, but next week we do!
2024 : rainniest year on record in Belgium. 190 days so far...
That doesn;'t surprise me. I fyou look all aorund the world, heat and rian fall records are constantly being broken right now. It's not good is it?
Hi. Wot material did you use for your tent. Good job. Paul from Cornwall.
Hi Paul, Cheers for the comment. I used Waterpoof Ripstop Nylon, PU coated 80gsm. It has a Hydrostatic head of about 1200mm. www.profabrics.co.uk/products/waterproof-ripstop-nylon-pu-coated
history repeating itself in season 4 again , i remember black magic being taken to the club from next door by Ritchie and next minute the water levels were up , the key was in the boat Dave for the lock , but you wernt to know that then . nice to see her again on film as that was the last time i owned her . Lulu is looking great and looking forward to seeing the adventures in season 4 personal and mental health can have a great impact on us during the winter months and i know we have spoke about that, glad you are better and sorting things out since keep up the good work
Yes I agree on the mental health, us older guys need to talk about it more and also health issues. Not soldier on as we tend to do. Hopefully thge water wont be as bad as last season. I remember missing 2 weeks of sailing for holidays and then another 2-3 due to the water being super high!
Didn’t see that coming…. Hope you are better now. Looking forward to your videos as always.
All good now though, so hopefully going to feel a lot better this season
Thank you for this video. I hope your healh is better now. But, as you said, "winter does not help"...🙂
Definitely not. I hate the dark, the cold and the cold at the best of times!!! Cheers for the comment
So close, Dave,... almost... Hope your health is okay... Enjoyed your outing, near the waters...👍
CHeers Marc, yes very nice to be near the water again!
Glad you got down there, even if it does look bleak 😂 Hopefully you are feeling better now
