Why parents need to give so much and then suffer themselves....I have seen parents taking loan for marriage and then slogging in their old age to repay that loan and they suffer a lot of that marriage fails and their daughter comes to stay with them with their two children ....so money lost, life lost and peace lost...better educate the girl and boy and let them marry without any dowry and also must love seperately in their own house ,not with any of the parents....

My parents were against dowry, but my in-laws asked for dowry....I was given lakhs worth of jewellery as dowry....after my dad passed away, my mom has given the entire property worth 6 crore to my brother...how is this fair...if my in-laws hadn't asked for dowry, I would have been left with nothing now because my parents were against my education as well as a career

What's wrong with parents giving the girl what she wants or whatever we can.... No one can give exact equally to children. Can they sell the only house parents built?.....
Why is it given at the time of her wedding, and sometimes assets in the name of her husband? The timing and nature of the giving is the issue at its core.
Demanding and expectations is the problem here. It's too bad.

I AGREE THAT WOMEN WERE NOT GETTING EQUAL SHARE IN Property. That needs to be rectified....But that is not the case now.. People started to calculate... Even then they will give more to men (boy child) because he has to do his ritualistic duties after his sister's marriage also... You can calculate that also..

Coming back to dowry as property topic...in olden times, if they give land to girl since she was going to husband's place, it is of no use... And they don't want to create chaos by including an outsider to do agri in their village... So they will give her in form of gold... Nowadays if two houses are there they are giving it to each kid... They are calculating & giving at the time of marriage itself as gold & property if any for girls...
Again I'm telling extracting is wrong.. But getting her share as dowry is not... Actually this is increasing the chance of getting women's share...

Being a Nadar whose native is Kanyakumari, I come from one of the communities in Tamil Nadu which deal with huge amounts of dowry. But it is preposterous to expect men not to accept dowry when the law gives away half of the man's property and puts his family in jail in case of a divorce or dowry accusation.
It is bullshit when these women speak about gender equality. Not one of these women who marry the traditional way would want to marry a guy who sits at home and does house work. I don't tell these things out of thin air. Kerala and Kanyakumari have always had a culture of sending their women abroad as nurses to earn their dowries. Most of these women earn way more than their husbands yet would despise if their husbands chose to stay at home and look after their children alone. These men actually look after the chldren as well as go to work after they themselves have amassed some amount from the Gulf. But once any of them stops working all hell breaks loose. So woman doing household chores is not something on an equal basis. A surrogate mother and a maid are cheaper if we are comparing on a cost basis. What about the woman's rent when she stays at the guys place? It would be only fair if they invested it together.
Unless the laws are made gender nuetral these issues of dowry would continue. If you push one gender unfairly too far, there will be consequences. The same has happened with the Caste based reservation which has led to brain drain. While you quote the Western societies blatantly, you forget that they have broken families which are a huge burden on the state. Can India afford that? Fortunately, High Courts like the Bombay High Court think rationally and have started ordering recently that a woman who is educated can not claim maintenance and survive like a leech. Hope Tamil Nadu learns from such cases and reforms its laws.
