Ian is the photographer I regularly follow on UA-cam. In the past, I followed other photographers but when they started talking about their van or anything other than photography, I gave up. I like his unique approach that doesn't mix with other photographers just to increase those ratings :-) on youtube. Ian's information is always relevant and helps you progress. Thanks Ian.

I'm an amateur and have been using my now 12y old Canon 7D for family, community and local sporting events. I have recieved a modest inheritance so as you say , I've splashed out on a new Canon EOS R6ii. I'm in for quite a learning curve and there is a local airshow in about 6 weeks. 🐯

I keep one step behind, waiting for the new camera to come out, then I wait a bit and buy the now ‘old’ one. I’m an Olympus user and still use the EM1 mark iii, as I don’t think for my level that it’s worth upgrading, even to the OM1. Just upgrade the firmware, but keep buying lenses, some new, some used. Lovely ‘wavey’ video, Ian.🇦🇺

Not really a comment about buying new cameras, but until 2012, I lived in your part of the world Ian before moving to Southern England. From 2002 until I left, I was shooting photos with an old Canon EOS film camera. My daughter was growing up at the time also. I have hundreds of photos of her plus the beautiful landscapes of Pembrokeshire. Recently I have had the best ones scanned as high Res Tifs and to see my old photos on my computer has been amazing. I still do photography all be it with a DSLR now (although I did recently buy a second hand film camera again), and it's nice to see that I took some cracking shots back then even when I didn't have the modern technology that makes photography a whole lot easier now

I have downgraded my camera gear over the past 12 months (as many might see it). But to my mind, it's the exact opposite. I have managed to dig myself out of the rabbit hole I was going down. Thinking I needed the latest and greatest camera tech. Whilst I still do shoot digital, I have gone back to early digital when there was the cross-over between film and digital. These cameras and their so-called 'low-tech' do place certain constraints on you as the photographer similar to shooting on film. You have to work harder to get a half-decent photograph. That is no bad thing and makes photography ‘real’ for me. and dare I say it....."fun again". I have also purchased several 35mm fillm SLRs. along with a 6X6 and 6x9 medium format bellows camera. (I’ll likely shoot mostly B&W on those). I bought some kit to develop B&W film at home and enjoy that ‘start to finish’ ownership of my work ending with a print. I have also put up 3 gallery style shelves at the back of the living room that I got from IKEA which weren’t that expensive. No point going to all that effort for my images to be just stored on the computer.

My last camera body upgrade actually meant downgrading by 6mp Canon EOS-R to R3 but the rest of the features of the R3 are so fantastic it was worth losing a bit of definition. As for lenses it's a constant evolution, I used to spend money on Motorcycles, now I can't ride so it's camera gear 😛 my problem is when I upgrade I still keep the old stuff so the cupboard under the stairs is rather full now 😁

I've been using a Nikon D3200 for the last 9yrs. I bought a Nikon D750 last week from MPB, only because I wanted it. I felt I deserved a jump to full frame. 😅 . I have a Sigma 105mm macro lens and a nikon 24-120mm . I love macro photography, which is what I've mostly done for the last few years. Now, I'm turning my attention to Landscape as well.

I always enjoy and benefit from your videos. Thanks Ian. I decided to take a different approach to new gear this year and just for fun purchased the now 10 year old Fujifilm X-T1 with a Sigma 56mm f/1.4 lens. The camera is actually in fantastic condition and the 56mm is a great lens. The sharpness of the shots is just unbelievable. Bought a used package deal for a great price. Play time!

I am a newcomer to photograpghy , since 2020 , I upgraded from a bridge camera to an apsc dslr 1 year ago , added a couple of used lenses, and a used flash . On a tight budget with a long wish list .... Next upgrades when funds allow are better tripod and a laptop or PC upgrade for processing as my old laptop throws a wobbly sometimes ( often ! ) especially when masking in post process . I made the switch to shoot raw , and manual , or TAv mode ( Pentax version of manual with auto iso ,) about 7 or 8 months ago and its really improved my photos , in addition to Watching great and wise photographers such as yourself Ian , this has really helped me learn , thank you .

Within the last year, I upgraded from a Canon T3i to a Canon R7. However, I do believe that spending money on training/acquiring knowledge is a lot more effective for improving my photography. This is the reason why I just purchased Ian's Landscape photography composition eBook. I think it is a great way to encourage him with creating new content. I did the same with Nigel Danson and Mads Peter Iversen. My photography improved a lot in the last few months because of these guys.

Very relevant comments in today’s competitive camera market! I fought upgrading…but kept saving money earned from photography! I recently upgraded to the Nikon Z8 and it has given me a boost in all the ways you’ve described! Over the years I’ve upgraded about every 5 years! I put a lot of clicks on my shutter…but now that I don’t have a shutter, it seemingly won’t matter…but storage issues may consume me! Thanks for taking me along!

I shoot one of Canon's entry level DSLR's from a few years ago. I bought it used; affordable for me. It is small and compact, as DSLR's go; fits my hand nicely. It provides what I want and need in features. I watch gear reviews when the photographers I follow present them, so I have a decent idea of what the capabilities of the current offerings are. When this camera fails, or wears out, I think I will buy another just like it. There should be more of them available used, and even more affordable, as others trade up and newer feature rich cameras enter the market. A good topic, Ian. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Ian, you make a great point about borrowing money to upgrade one's camera. I buy secondhand gear and am always at least one step behind the latest models. I recently upgraded from a Sony Rx10 Mark 4 to a Sony A7Riv; the reason behind my move to full-frame was better low light performance, better dynamic range, and the chance to use wide angle lenses. With lens purchases it was a major investment over a few months, as I waited until what I wanted was available at the right price. I feel that there is a lot to be said for buying used gear and unless there is going to be a real step change in performance, the money is usually better spent on tuition days with inspiring photographers and/or trips to places that will expand one's horizons. The magazines, which I no longer purchase, make most of their revenue from advertisements. That means that they promote the latest gear as a solution to readers' problems; if they didn't, their advertisers would go elsewhere. In reality, buying new gear rarely makes much difference. I now spend the money I used to spend on the magazines on secondhand books that inspire me.

Thank you for your videos and all the work which you have to put into making them.
I upgraded from canon 7d ii to Olympus EM1 mk iii some 4 years a go due mainly to a 50% weight saving especially when out doing bird photography which is my main interest, and them OM1 some 2 years ago.
Nearing 75 years of age switching to OM Sysstems/Olympus has reinvigorated my love of photography due to the lightness, size, in camera stability and computational features which I love, so very happy I switched.

Ian. Thank you for yet another compelling video. I've watched for a number of years now and always appreciate the hard work needed to do it well and "do it well" indeed describes your work. I shot a Nikon D300S from 2012 until 2018, when I switched to a Fujifilm XT3. Loved these photos, but kept accidentally hitting various buttons and changing my camera settings. So, in 2021 I switched once again to a Canon R5 and that's been the way to go for me. Way fewer complaints now.

Until recently I owed a Nikon D7100 that I purchased, new, in 2015. Recently felt the need to upgrade. Wanted to move to full frame with better low light performance, higher frame rate, better buffer, improved battery life, etc. Thought about going mirrorless with a Nikon Z6ii but I love an OVF and already owed numerous F lenses some of which were actually FX lenses that (obviously) worked on a DX body. In the end I went for a Nikon D780 and I am delighted with it even though I did have to purchase a couple of additional FX lenses as well, one brand new and one used from MPB which I px'd some DX lenses for. By the way, that last shot is simply beautiful and well worth the wait. Cheers. Ken

Interesting video Ian and always lovely to follow you around the Welsh Coastline too. Ref upgrades, for me every 4 years or so for Camera's however, I am usually "behind the curve" so to speak, last upgrade spring last year, was from my Fuji X-T1 to an X-T2. However, I have ended up keeping the X-T1, as basically I still love it so much! Both VERY capable Cameras IMOP, so I certainly don't need anything like an X-T5, well maybe in 10 years or so! Ebay is my camera shopping heaven! Thanks for sharing Ian 🙂

Ian, I'm retired, do freelance work, and just about everything else common. All that winds up about six to eight thousand shots a year. When it comes to upgrading equipment, it often seems to be about 120,000 clicks. Because Pentax is so reliable, I'm still using my 15 year old ASP-C camera and my full frame K1 camera. I don't plan on a replacement until a problem occurs too one of them. That should be the older ASP-C camera. So far they are both working just like new.

Hey there! Nice shots! Yeah: I also upgrade my camera every five years or so. Usually because the increased performance would help me get better shots. I moved from Canon dslr's to the x-t3 about 5 years ago. So yeah it's about the time to get something different. But at the moment I'm perfectly happy with the X-t3. In terms of image quality and overall usability it's still top notch. I did buy an x-t1 as a fun camera on the side though, because I really like the colours of that sensor.

Just waiting for the XT40 to be announced!!! This will be my carry around baby brother to my XT5 - Sold my X100V and got a great price for it. Didn't use it much as the fixed lens was a bit limiting. I also never used the optical viewfinder nor the inbuilt ND filter so I wanted to get a new carry around that is small and still change a lens if needed (interested in the new 17-50 announced recently by Fuji) Hoping that the XT40 will have the new 40mp sensor too.

I use a Canon EOS Rebel T7 a 24pm APS-c and the biggest improvement I have seen is FPS for stills which would be nice to capture 20 or even 30 photos in a second for that one moment in time but I am very content and find I am the limitation and not my camera or my lens, I can see my camera dying before I upgrade it.
I had a Canon Powershot A520 that I used from the time I was 10 till I graduated college and the T7 was a gift, I did a ton of photography of butterflies with that Powershot and wish I kept it.

Hi Ian. I hope some people might agree with me. I have a Nikon D5500. WOW an 'old' camera. I got it 4 years ago as an intro to 'taking pictures' and starting on my 'photo journey'. I have taken (in my opinion) some great shots. I don't print my photo's overly much - do share on Face++++ sometimes. All landscape stuff - so 'fast' autofoucus stuff is not my bag. Apart from Nikon not upgrading the DSLR line do I really need to upgrade to Z7? I'm coming to understand that, forget the 'latest' model, what do you shoot with your camera and what is that camera? Auto focus? Get the top range! Landscape? Z6? At the moment, I am playing with my DSLR D5500 and, composition, composition, lighting, composition, having fun. Your vids are always fun, thanks, keep it up. David

I didn't update camera bodies for a while. The latest is an X-T4 and a GFX50R which I bought second hand some years ago. I am looking at the prices of used X-H2S and GFX 100S, but so far my GAS wasn't strong enough. 😂 I was thinking about how a different body would improve my photography. The main reason would be a faster and more reliable autofocus. But I would only need that in rare cases where I shoot wildlife images.
In fact, I just saw a video about alternatives for the new hyped X100VI. And that inspired me to take my first Fuji camera, which was the X-E1, out with me this afternoon. I took some very nice pictures with the pancake 27mm. The images worked just fine as a JPEG, which I usually rather not use.
It was a contrary team in my bag, the X-E1 with the 27mm and the X-T4 with the 150-600. 😁

Hobbyist here. After upgrading from a bridge camera to Sony a6300 APS-C I spent about 12-18 months shooting that before deciding to sink money into going full frame. At the time the best "pro-sumer" camera out there was the Sony A7RIII. It was overkill for what I was doing but I didn't want my gear to be the weakest link. If the pictures were crap, I knew it was me, not the gear so I knew what I needed to work on skill-wise for myself.
Upgrade urges came when the A7RIV and A7IV were released but there just wasn't enough feature upgrades or irritant fixes to justify the money.
When the A7RV was released I upgraded(about 4 years). I took a close look at the newer features/functions to see if they would solve any issues/challenges I was having with the A7RIII. The features were ones that weren't just an "oh that'd be nice" but things that actually fixed items that interfered with my creativity. (the shutter shield for swapping lenses in unprotected conditions. The flip-out rotating screen for taking shots at weird angles, etc)
Is it more camera than I need, probably. Does it make me a better photographer? I'd say yes because any crap images are my fault and not the gear's. It makes me have to learn how to fix it. Just my .02

Recently I decided to buy a second camera body to add to my Nikon D7200. I did want to make huge investment in changing to mirrorless as I still happy with my DSLR. I decided to try buying a used Nikon D750. Careful watching of photography shops led to my buying used D750 in mint condition with a low shutter count at what I thought a realistic price. I bought from a retailer I trust which I think is important when buying used gear.

I do shoot professionally, but I don't do it full-time and I do rethink. There is some good reasons to upgrade your gear. One is the depreciation in value and maybe at some point you probably will resell it anyway so the longer you hold onto it, the less it becomes worth value. This is why I kind of operate on the similar focus around two years, because that's roughly when new models come out, sometimes quicker sometimes longer and I know in that time that your gear will depreciate significantly and eventually it's kind of worth nothing. However, if you upgrade every two years you get a new camera and you haven't lost too much money. Think of it as selling a used car. If you use car has got thousands of kilometres on it. It eventually is worth nothing and cameras are very similar. I agreed with Ian also that it can actually inspire you. It's a new device that gives you inspiration to go out and shoot and we shouldn't need that inspiration, but sometimes that's how it is. I upgraded about six months ago into the GFX system, and I absolutely love it. It's giving me a new lease. It's a very different way of shooting and it is actually got me to slow down and I'm much more methodical now so even new gear can change the way you shoot if it's a different system, I just fell in love with the Fujifilm colour science. And I wanted to stay in Fuji film but had nowhere to go with the X series cameras to upgrade as I had the best in the XT5 so it was GFX and I've loved it, but I have kept my XT5. The question really is, do you need to upgrade probably not but should you upgrade it a very different question and I actually think it's quite smart to upgrade

I shoot Nikon and Fuji. Still have the Nikon D850 and upgraded the XT3 to XT5. Recently picked up the Nikon Zf but I don’t consider that an upgrade to the 45MP D850.

I'm always behind...I used a 5dii from the day it came out up until 3 years ago. The only camera i ever purchased new in my 25 years of shooting. I'll stick with my a7Riii's until they die... Then maybe find more used.

As someone who sold cameras for a living I should be ashamed to say before upgrading to the XH2 last year, I shot with a Nikon D800 for 11 years. But the Nikon worked for me until the point I needed to lessen some of the load. (Getting old sucks.) As an aside, I have two cars, one is 15 years old, the other 13, but they still run great and I really don't need Apple Play.

I guess I'm going to buck the trend more than a little here. I have a 5Ds and having tried the R6 & R7 I've decided to stick with it.
Canon colours are stillin my opinion the best add 50Mp to it and I am in a sweet spot. The sensor is great the only area less capable than the newer sensors is in Dynamic Range but it is so rarely I need it it's literally not an issue.
The extra electronics and fancy bits to allow the camera to take the photo for me are irrelavent for someone who has more or less everything in manual and for wild bird photography I don't need gazilions of fps because I can't be bothered to spend the extra hours going through files later.
I havde used an R7 a fair bit and was quite releived to get back to the 5Ds afterwards.
Lens wise, the new R lenses are not better in ways that make a difference to EF lenses when you use the gear correctly, most of my lenses are L's except where alternatives are even better.
Oh, and I like to be able to hold the camera without my fingers in knots and still reach all the buttons. If you want to save a few ounces go to the gym; if you need to carry a few more ounces go to the gym.
Looking through a lens not an EVF keeps me in touch with whata I'm doing, for the extra functions I have a PortKeys 5" on top or elsewhere.
So do you need to upgrade ? Depends on how old and capable your old gear is, my 5Ds is old maybe but capabilty is still at the top and I am always scheptical of marketting.

I have only ever used crop sensor, 90d at the moment but now feel full frame mirrorless . However really worried about the jump ,will it help me with my landscape . Not only the expense of the camera but different lenses. Will this take me too far out of my comfort zone?

The only camera equipment I will upgrade every time is my main body. I shoot with a Nikon Z9 and when the Z9ii eventually comes out my current camera will still hold a significant value. So I can sell it and pick up the new one. If I wait too long the value drops significantly for my existing camera.
Buying a new camera is just plain fun and there's nothing wrong with it. Is it required? NOPE. Does it make me happy when I do? YEP!

I last upgraded just over 2 years ago. I went from a Canon 5D Mark 4 to a Canon R5. The R5 is smaller and lighter that the 5D and due to a progressive disability I am constantly finding that I am having to go for smaller and lighter equipment.

Upgrading every 18 months in the Full Frame world would mean at least $3500 USD each go around and where cameras are now, that might be the ultimate in diminishing returns. Fuji APS-C is definitely the best bang for the buck. 👍👍

I need the money when I'm retired so I'm buying stocks every month for many years. Buying a 3000.- camera is a ten years investment for me. My A7RIII now is seven years old. Backup is an a6600. I haven't identified any logic reason to upgrade earlier. 🤷🏻‍♂️. What I lately did is upgrading the lenses on the 2nd hand market in order to fit the resolution output of the RV in three years. Have a plan, keep control. GAS is for mental amateurs.

Hi ian. I moved from my olmpus om10 35mm.to a canon eos 1000d. I liked the idea of being able to see my work .rather than wait to get the film processed. I also have canon eos m100 and a m50.these small cameras, in my opinion, are extremely usefuI .miss using film. But as I mentioned earlier, you do get to see your work there and then.so any mistakes can usually be made good.and all my equipment is second user .I work like the cameras are film and not digital. I must mention that when I purchased my om10.there was no constant upgrading. Of gear. Cameras are constantly changing and lenses.firmware, etc. And no histogram or lightroom to play with. Wait a year and there will be a ai button on the cameras. Keep up the excellent work.
    Regards David

Thee are reasons to upgrade to a new camera or even camera system. For pros, earning more money from your photography is a good one. Shutter count is not, Matthew Vanderputte reported around 800,000 on a 5D Mark III. In any event, shutters are readily replaceable.
I "upgraded" to micro four thirds because my Canon gear was getting tiresomely overweight. However, I bought a Lumix S1R because I like my TS-E lenses, and the Lumix cameras enable me to make photos I cannot with the 5Ds it replaced. I bought a used OM-D E-M1x because I can make photos with it that I cannot with an E-M1 Mark II or a Lumix G9 and it has GPS built in.. Later Olympus/OM Systems camera offer no advantages over the E-M1x that are useful to me.
If I got out my EOS 30D and made some photos with that, nobody would know the difference.

Its such a dilemma isn’t it? I need to upgrade because arthritis is making my dslr feel heavier and heavier. I thought I had made my mind up to buy the fuji xs20 plenty of mp for me and very light. But grrr! No weather sealing. So now I’m thinking xt5, a bit heavier and maybe more megapixels than my ancient mac can deal with 🤷‍♂️.

Unless you are a high end landscape photographer you do not need the latest gear. To prove the point I sold images taken with a point and shoot to a New York branding firm owned essentially by the Dubai government. To this day I use a 2010 pentax k5 an upgrade would be OK but in truth not essential

I tend to upgrade my camera bodies about every ten years as that seems to be the best value for money with Canon. However now with RF I am contemplating switching Brands so that upgrade cycle may change.

  • @317Media_Indy

Personally, I'm less likely to upgrade bodies as fast as 18 months. Where I can understand your timeline mostis about exposure to the elements. My camera bodies are much less susceptible to the elements. I shoot real estate/arch, portraits mostly, then city scapes and landscape. Far less exposure to the elements on my end. That said, unless a body is going to make me more money or significantly impact my workflow, upgrading my body is less necessary. I've also had pretty good luck on used lenses to help control costs. Buying form the MPB or KEH types is a lil safer than the eBay and other sites.
