What is OCT Scanning? (Optical Coherence Tomography)

- In our practices we use OCT scanning technology to obtain more detailed information of the ocular structures than has been possible by previous means.
The OCT can visualise the deeper layers of the retina, where many disease processes begin, often detecting conditions before a patients vision has been adversely affected. If treatment is started at this stage then visual loss can often minimised. This is especially true in conditions such as Vitreo-Macular Traction (VMT) and Wet Macular Degeneration (AMD). We have another UA-cam video showing the injection technique used to treat wet macular degeneration.
In addition to being able to visualise the deeper layers of the retina where many types of macular degeneration occur, we can now see the transparent structures of the eye which were previously invisible to conventional imaging, such as the Vitreous Humour (Jelly) that lies anterior to the retina and the transparent nerve fibres that lie on its surface and take the visual signal to the brain for processing. By this means it is often possible to intervene before blinding conditions such as Macular Hole formation occur and diagnose conditions such as Glaucoma much sooner.
The same technology is used to monitor many conditions so that we can ensure that treatment remains at optimal levels. The new Ganglion Cell Analysis and Nerve fibre Analysis modules are extremely powerful in this respect.
The Anterior segment OCT imaging gives us detailed information about the cornea, the iris and the anterior drainage angle. This can help to detect the early signs of imminent Angle Closure Glaucoma and corneal deisease.
All this information is gathered painlessly often without the need to dilate the pupil.
We believe that all the Over-60s should have regular OCT screening for Macular Degeneration every 2 years.

Thank you. Am just going to have this test today. I understand about it better now.
Why did you need it? How was it?
@@solocare123 you can spot cancer (late stage)
Thank you for this precious infomation. ❤👍👍👍👍
I have nistagmus, so getting a valid OCT scan has been difficult. I currently have a macular oedema I'm trying to get treatment for, but without a valid OCT, it's more difficult to properly treat, as I understand it. Thanks for sharing this video.
Just had the OCT during my eye test today and it is painless. It costs £20 in the UK and I definitely would recommend it to anybody.
why is it worth it did you find out anything
@@user-wc3zt5fq2o my uncle went to a test and they told him there is something strange in his eyes, later he found out he had sever cancer but alhumdulla there is medicine to keep him alive for few years

Have an appointment today…was wondering what is OCT Scan. Thanks for explanation.
What's your results
Wow…thank you very much
Thank you for a clear and informative video.
I just got an OCT this week for glaucoma with my glaucoma specialist.
Thank you
Türkiye'de yaşıyorum ve her muayene olmamda ücretsiz OCT çekiyorlar ülkemiz sağlık konusunda harika
THANK YOU! 🦋
I still feel nervous to find out what actually happened to my macula tomorrow! May Allah ease everything 😖
I hope it went well.
The same Allah that presumably caused the eye problem in the first place? lol

00:53 what do the colors represent? what is red, what is blue? do the colors represent the cell density? or red = high refractive index & blue = low refractive index?
TheCarmacon The colours are used to show up different retinal layers and can be referred to as pseudo-colours, somewhat arbitrarily representing degrees of reflectivity. Most OCT instruments allow the user to also view scans as positive or negative black and white images - I tend to use whichever type of image best shows up the structures I'm looking at.

Post cateracts surgery my right eye had gone from 'i can see stars again' to 'wwrpedvglassvfull of wster'
Going to go see a retina specialist next week. So, thank you for posting things like this so I have some idea of what I have to look forward to.
Thanks for the explanation
I'm here before I undergo OCT this wee.
Very good
Can you ask for this at normal eye exam?
Only some opticians will have this equipment.
Hello, yesterday i went for oct test and doctor told me that you have early glaucoma. I was shocked to hear that as i am just 23 year old . I don’t have any family background. Should i visit another doctor to confirm it? Or start taking eye drops?

Does this test shine a bright light or a laser in the eye? I don’t want that
No it doesn't. The one I did you focus on a green star shape that's on a red background and that background occasionally cuts to black. It's not bad at all.
@@timtaylor9298 that’s good news . I have such bad problems with my eyes that I’m so scared of all these tests and getting bright lights shined in the eye

I hate my doctors. Noone ever told me about this. And I have - 7 Dioptries. Which get always worser with - 0,5 - 1,0 dioptries in just each half year. I don't know what I have. And I hope soon I'll find it out. 🙏🏻
I assume, it might be progressive glaucoma , or your eyes are continuously growing rapidly resulting in progressive myopia
Dr. Just says I'm high risk for glaucoma... That my cornea is small and my optic nerve is thinning... Just high risk.... Si what does that even mean??? That I will get glaucoma later on?
My eye pressure is normal
people paid for this scan?
so why didn't my dr. tell me about this. Doctor Utube to the rescue.
