- A behind the scenes look at the Gretsch USA factory, including a look at the unique manufacturing techniques and rich artisan tradition that has created that Great Gretsch sound for generations. Part 2 of 2.
Still got my kit from 1963 and still sounds great
Awesome.
I heard of a guy who has a kit from the 50s and he plays them on tour. His name is Charlie Watts.
I recently bought my first Gretsch kit (USA Custom Limited Edition Ribbon Mahogany). It's beautiful! Looks and sound are superb! Thank you guys for building these drums!!!
I have been playing a DW collectors maple kit for the last 17 years and thought I was happy. Recently a co workers brother was moving and asked me if i was interested in buying his "OLD" drumset When he brought it in to work I almost passed out when I saw it was a mid sixties Round badge in red sparkle 9x13,16x16,14x20 and a 5x14 COB snare. A Iittle cleaning and some new G1's and I was blown away by the sound and power coming from this kit! EVERYONE comments on the look and sound of this kit!
Gretsch is the only kit for me.I've loved Gretsch Drums all of my 48 year's playing drums.I'm currently playing Southern Rock.
Gretsch is like fine wine. Smooth like silk
Best drums in the whole world
My 1984 power shell kit sounds better today than it did 33 years ago. I don't gig it anymore, but when I go to it for recording- look out! It's deep, deep and rich and melodic. It inspires me and anyone in the room to play better, to be more creative. The drums are truly a marvel and a genuine breathing organic instrument. They're gorgeous too, maple with the mahogany stain that looks a mile deep.
I have a Gretsch Brooklyn snare drum. High quality snare. Pretty versatile as it can play jazz and pop type stuff. Gretsch drums are my favorite
Gretsch USA drums - best on the planet. Have played top of the line Pearl and also have nice set of Tama. Bottom line is nothing ... absolutely... nothing sounds like Gretsch USA Custom drums. More than 40 years as a performer.... And recording - they really have the punch
Veteran player
If it only made in USA...not China
@@trialsbikeguy Yes, these are the USA-made line... not Chinese, though Gretsch does have import lines...
Gretsch import line is excellent. If you’re playing in dive clubs many drummers are not comfortable bringing in drums that cost 2-3 thousand dollars. Bring in a budget kit and you won’t be paranoid of getting them banged up
Patient... I must remain patient. Quality takes time and I'm 3 months into my wait for my Broadkasters. :-)
Honestly, I never realized how hand-made both Gretsch and Ludwig high-end drums were until I watched their respective videos. I’ve always imagined that they came from big, relatively automated factories, but their top stuff doesn’t. They’re just about as “personal” as any boutique brand out there. Really impressive!
There are machines used but yes, there’s definitely hands on work. This applies for guitars too
Keep on rockin', man!
Thanks for the video. It is really interesting to see how you made the drums I bought last year! Gretsch is the best!
Love my Tony Williams Yellow Kit!!!
Now if I could only play like Tony!!!
You don’t need to play like Tony. Just play like Ringo.
I guess this is where my V.C signature series was made! 😢
IN 1959 O.L.P.H. RIDGEMEN DRUM & BUGLE CORPS BUGLE CORPS BROOKLYN ,N.Y. BOUGHT A NEW SET OF GRETSCH DRUM'S BLUE SPARKLE. 3 SNARE, 3 TENER, 2 BASE. OUR DRUM LINE LOVED THE SOUND. AND I PLAYED SNARE.
Always loved the shimmery, sparkly wraps. It made buying a silver sparkle Gretsch Duo Jet the easiest decision ever. Pure ear and eye candy.
YES!
I bought the Gretsch 6 piece hickory. So glad I did it's just awesome.
I have 2 Gretsch kits: a '90s CE mahogany with walnut finish and a beautiful 1958 (I think) round badge with unique wrap - its WMP but with gold and silver strands running through it, a total one-off, I believe. With Earthtone calfskin heads on, it sounds gorgeous! Thank you, Gretsch :-)
I've got a Catalina and a New Classic set, love 'em both. Someday there will be a Brooklyn kit as well...
The people that work there are so lucky. I would love to have that job.
I was just about to say the same thing. I would love to work there!
@TakkaTakkaDude Thank you!! Keep rockin that kit!
Absolutely ✌
watched this video lived them ever since
@DTxOctavariumx THANK YOU, ive got a catalina jazz that i LOVE, my church has a pearl reference 6 pc kit, honestly i think mine sound as good if not better, someday my 2 yr old son will jammin on my catalina jazz and ill have a renown 57 kit
You got sold, that's for sure. Gretsch USA Custom are made in the USA, not in Asian, like all other Gretsch lines. My USA Custom bop kit with the Japer shells smoke my old Catalina Clubs...I used to have a nice set of Tama Granstars from 1987-2002 but who needs "power toms"? My bop kit is the best kit out there! Maple satin stain! Sweet! Worth every penny.
They didn't mention the sliver sealer but it happened right before the wet sanding...
It's such a guarded secret that I'm not surprised they didn't mention it.
Tin roof sealer. You can buy it online.
Rustoleum Chain Link Fence Paint. It’s an exact match. It’s a pretty simple secret, which is why they keep it a mysterious secret because it’s so easy to duplicate.
The silver sealer paint is a secret blend of rare powered crystals from Tasmania
@@ramencurry6672 And your name has been my delicacy dinner every night for 25 years...
I wish I could talk to someone about their mounting hardware
that is probably because they have mahogany shells and the pearl drums have poplar shells. I love the poplar tone, it is more like birch which is much louder and has more attack. i also find that you can get more configurations in pearl and tama.
30* edge was reversed back in the 60's and the old drums sound more dry. Old man Gretsch here makes it seem as if it's because the old wood is harder....well, that's almost right....
concerning the great gretsch sound, you can even get it out of the catalina series. i bought a used catalina club rock with the 26 inch kick and i'm overwhelmed by the sound i could get out of it, so no matter where and by whom you have the catalinas produced, at least my set sounds and feels really great.
good job!
In my opinion, Gretsch and Ludwig are the best vintage drums in the world. However I must say that I like Gretsch way more than Ludwig, no doubt!
Is this for every style of sets? From the catalinas to the renowns?
@Gamestationx360 agreed!!!
Gretsch is an american staple in jazz drums with the perfect sound very jazz drummer has in their mind which is so hard to find. I want a usa custom bebop kit sooooooo bad. Just don't have the money :(
yeah, the YESS mounts are the best
i agree. Pearl and tama have MANY more configurations, but im just a simple four piece man, so i dont really worry about configurations when looking for kits. I just personally favor gretsch over other companies. Gretsch has "my" sound for my music. It wouldnt matter to me if "my" sound came from pearls, tamas, sonors, tayes, ocdp. it just happens to be gretsch.
I want to buy a catalina club but I want the color of the red ruby gloss or the royal blue oyster, I quess I need to save up to buy a Brooklyn then :)
i have a catalina kit, and an old 1990 export kit. and i have to say, In my opinion the gretschs blow the pearls out of the water.
But i also have to say that the gretschs have a much warmer tone.
it really depends on what you're looking for.
The Catalina kit is actually pro level despite the budget price. The only thing is that the build quality is not as good as the more expensive models but still durable enough though
Which facility makes the mardis gras finish and what is their phone number?
@TheMASDrummer And what did you expect , Sienna Miller talking about drums?.
best industrial drums !!!
I just may sell the DW's! LOL!
Just because they are cheap doesnt mean they are the same. Yes they are made in Asia, but Ive never heard anything around the price of beginner kits sound like Catalina's. Everything sounds pretty bad but Gretsch and their Birch was really good. I have a Mapex QR which is basswood and Im not sure about it
Where is the square badge
I meant for playing music.
how about the inside laquer?????
@DTxOctavariumx you sir have ears and you used them . Gretsch hasn't had to deviate from their formula because it works!
Its sort of sad to see only a few employees and almost NOTHING going on at both Gretsch and Ludwig in these factory tour videos. LOW sales today. Compare to Slingerland (for instance) in the 1940's and 50's having a THIRD SHIFT at the factory manufacturing through the night. Those days (and demand) are gone forever.
I am so impressed with the Mapex Saturn sound that I dont care where they are made. If I had it to do over again I would have paid $1000 MORE for the kit if I had to. I have had [this] kit for 9 years now and fall in love with the sound everytime I play them. and I didnt pay not where near what I would have had to pay for the "non Blackhawk Gretsch" kit. this is why I said Gretsch has serious competition from Mapex. also after 9 years I still have no worn out hardware parts! I got sold alright!
I glade you have a video of the factory , I stopped at the Gretsch factory in Ridgeland S.C. They wouldn't lot us in to tour the factory. how rude ! I use Ludwig anyway.
Erm is this true?
He kept saying "drum" through the construction process!..
He should have referred to it
as a "shell"!! It becomes a drum when the lugs, hoops & heads are put on it!!
Why can't American drum companies get away from those big ugly generic isolation mounts? Why not just attach a couple of stand-offs to the shell and then attach the tom mount to the stand-offs. Kind of like the approach Yamaha took.
I remember the Gretsch sound from years ago and NOTHING competed with it. then I went to buy a new kit and was told by the music store SALESMAN that gretsch is now made in china/japan/taiwan like all the rest. so I settled on Mapex maple shells.
made oversees too but it didnt cost me 5 grand! wow! the Mapex maple Saturn Pro Series sound BLEW ME AWAY!!!! Gretsch you have SERIOUS competition from Mapex!
yeah, catalinas aren't much better than other entry level kits. i would rather buy a pearl export or a tama imperialstar. however, the upper level gretsch stuff is amazing.
I surely would let her wet-sand my drum. heheh :)
Gretsch: The most under-rated drum brand in the world.
Tama and Pearl: OVER RATED
