An immigrant somehow got one (when many of us just cannot right now), is renting the basement of it to a family of like immigrants for the entire mortgage, utilities and all. The (legal in this case) migrant came to us bc he couldn't make enough to pay all that and for his family. This man, once settled, will do fine. He had already learned and uses good English is educated as an engineer and is a good law abiding new citizen & father. The first couple years may be tough bc he's being exploited. By his own!

Rob, not that simple:
1) The upfront cost must be paid in full at the point in time of construction.
2) At a federal level, it's a capital expenditure and counted as an addition to the building which must be depreciated over a period of years, according to depreciation tables provided by the IRS. Publication 946 tells you the number of years for depreciating additions to a building.
3) The addition increases the valuation of the property... which in all states, increases the property taxes.
4) Any interest on loans taken out for the construction is only partially deductible.
5) States have their own depreciation schedule, some at a much slower rate than the feds!

I don't agree with these new laws and regulations however why aren't these businesses which have been open long before these decisions being given, "grandfather rights?" If they exist before these laws and mandates. This is usually how these things are handled. You are "grandfathered in."
That's how it is "supposed to be". At least that's how it was in 2003 when my parents brought their first house, a 3 bedroom 1 bath bungalow built in 1932, it had knob and tube wiring, 1 wall outlet per room, some lead plumbing, and the electrical panel had the old school porcelain fuse holders with exposed terminals easily touched, and the "main breaker " was in a separate box with 2 fuses and a knife switch (ahh, the old Frankenstein movies) My parents were not required to have it updated although they did very shortly after moving in for obvious safety reasons, and it was the ideal starter home. And this was just outside of Port Huron, Michigan.
Until the powers that be dictate otherwise.

I agree, but to be fair, almost every ideology is the same way. Take the issue of reproductive rights. Both sides try to force the other to comply with their beliefs. One side wants to force women to have babies they may not want, at the expense of the woman who is pregnant and the rest of society who has to pay taxes to support schools, medical care, food, etc. for that child for years. The other side wants to force the rest of us to pay taxes to fund clinics and birth control and to require employers to pay for medical care that supports it. That's how ideology works. Everyone wants other people to pay the price.
