- Watch our battle between the DDJ-400 and the XDJ-RR. The DDJ-400 is Pioneer DJ's latest two-channel Rekordbox Controller that's got a layout which is very similar to the big 2000NXS2 Setup. The XDJ-RR has the looks as well, but is a stand-alone DJ set.
What's the best choice within your budget and is it fair to compare those two?
We provide lessons on the DDJ-400 and XDJ-RR as well. For more info check out our website: www.djschoolamsterdam.nl

You can prepare your tracks in Rekordbox on any old pc at home, or even on an iPad. When you're a beginner DJ and buy the DDJ-400 and want to play at gigs, you also need to buy a decent and stable laptop. A DDJ-400 and a decent laptop together easily cost as much as a XDJ-RR. What 're your thoughts on that?
Most laptops that are not older than an few years will do the job at a live gig, so for most people buying a new laptop is not neccesary. We do feel a stand alone player is more hands-on, and more error proof than a laptop setup, so for live gigs we would prefer a stand alone setup.
Just got the DDJ-200 for Christmas. It's a great controller. Love it!
I’ve owned the ddj400 for almost a year now, it was my first controller, my only issue with it is the lack of features and the stupid price gap between the ddj400 and the ddj800, i would have spent an extra 100 or so for the 800 but not more than double the price of a 400, that being said i will sell my400 soon and get the 800.
I have a 400 and I’m looking to upgrade to the XDJ RR. Thanks for this video guys!
Update: I bought a used XDJ-RX on eBay. No regrets. I love it.
Update #2: looking to upgrade from the RX to an RX2 or XZ.. not sure yet.
@@raspa2 hey, maybe you could give me a brief advice. i'm using a reloop beatmix 2 at the moment (equivalent to the DDJ400 i'd say) and i'm thinking about upgrading to the XDJ RR but i'm wondering if i'm going to miss the laptop... what was it like for you?
@@Max_Kleiber negative.. I don’t miss the laptop at all. My goal is to hopefully play local clubs, and the all in one units imitate the club setups pretty well. You would still use the laptop to prep and analyze your tracks before transferring them to the standalone.
@@raspa2 thank you for your input. that was very helpful indeed! i'll think it over then. both have advantages and disadvantages...
Currently upgraded from the SB2 to the RR. It seems a better upgrade would have been to the RX3 but I can't justify it for a bedroom setup. I want to practise in the bedroom the proper way and the RR will help me do that!
hi, I intend to buy a console that allows me to train and be prepared to play in a club with CDJs, do I think it is necessary to buy a console similar to these?
@@danielebellezza8699 I think they will definitely help but are not mandatory. The all in one is similar to using the CDJs in the club. I’ve been to the studio a few times to use them and it’s not much different to my mixer (obviously a lot better) so in my experience the RR has helped me. There’s some big differences but for the most part it’s similar. I can’t speak for other mixers
Thanks guys
Con este video para mi ya es claro que debo comprar! Greats!!
ThankYou!
What about the FLX6?
I’m planning on getting back into Djing after a long time away. I was experienced and playing live clubs / festivals years ago in the 1210 days, so making my first transition toward a pioneer something.
I like the look of this RR, but have also seen a FLX6 that seems decent price.
What would be best you thing? The RR, the FLX6 or. DDJ 800?
Hi there. The choice for a controller or a stand-alone unit is a big decision. In our lessons we see that most DJ's eventually want to play without the laptop. When you DO choose a controller, you really have to feel and see them to make a good choice. More or less they do the same, but the handling and looks are slightly different. So check your local shop and try to play some songs on each of them. Good luck!
Can you record sets on the DDJ-400?
Yes, you can record your set using the software that controls the DDJ-400, Rekordbox DJ
Great video thanks
Sound quality difference?
great video, very clear.
The way I see it... No matter what you used... You still need a computer to setup songs with any standalone or DDJ. If you not set it up first like a first beat of a grid or cue memories or hot que, XDJ not gonna work properly. That's my experiences sorry if I am wrong. For sure with 8 pads we can play much free as we want, but again have to set it up first with computer. And... There is none of the crowd which is not a DJ come to DJ booth and said "Ooo... Your equipment is small and cheap. You are not a pro!" They downstairs at the dance floor and dance. It's about how we make them happy 😁👍
For long-term equipment... I better used the 4 channels no matter Controller or Standalone.
But this review is an honest review. It's awesome!
Hi Gadzilla, thanks for your response! We do feel a difference in that a XDJ uses just the USB while playing, and you don't need to bring and connect a laptop to your gigs, even though both need rekordbox to prepare your set. We agree that you can give a great performance on any gear setup, at DJ School Amsterdam we advice students on a budget the DDJ-400. We also have much more focus on style development, timing, entrepreneurship and mental coaching, since those are the main ingredients in becoming a high level professional, the gear and mixing are not the most important!
@@DJSchoolAmsterdam Yes that is true. I only used Numark Mixtrack Pro 3 for my Afro-Latin gigs whish is ply Kizomba. Zouk, Salsa and Bachata. Have DDJ RX but rare to used it. In Indonesia most mobile DJ have more than just DDJ RX but no used if we don't have the skill and actually many times the crowd didn't notice it. For sure my hand still shaking if I have to play with 2000 MK2 hahaha... like you said mentality is one of the most important things.
hi, I intend to buy a console that allows me to train and be prepared to play in a club with CDJs, do I think it is necessary to buy a console similar to cdj3000?
Do they differ in sound quality output? Since one has its own sound card?
Yes, the RR has a slighty better sound quality, though we would not consider it of a high importance. Sound quality is more important for gear selection such as speakers and amplifiers, since these soudcards transfer lower level output signals. Always be carefull to keep your levels well under 0DB output with this kind of gear, since the output signal will get worse (distortion) quickly when driven into to the 'red zone'.
@@DJSchoolAmsterdam thanks for the vety nice answer! I would play in smaller Clubs too with great speakers, sub and a not so great mixer.. therefore I thought about rerouting the sound through the xdj
@@rick.walder That is a good idea, just keep it well under 0DB and you will be fine!
XDJ-RR or DDJ-800?
Ddj 800 definitely
Xdj-RR for sure!
I am caught between the RB and the 400. The RB now costs a lot cheaper than 400. For a beginner, like me, there is not much difference between them but what is noticeable is the difference in Pitch Fader Length and lack of cue mixing in RB.
Which do you think should I buy for a beginner like me who have no real aspirations to be a professional DJ but would like to learn for myself and play in family or close friends party only.
Cheers!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!🎄🎁🎉
I was thinking the same, and a friend of mine who owns a 1600 Euro System told me to start with the DDJ 400. I don't regret it, I really like it, but I don't have the knowledge to use it.
@@Dominik-or3pw
I got a DDJ-400 myself as well...and been playing with it recently whenever can...enjoyed it very much...
I plan on making a DIY flight case for it...
Cheers!
Practice on software avoid both the rb and 400 and at least get an xdj rr when you're ready.
I mean you could get a pair of cdj200 and a mixer to learn how to mix you'd just have to burn cds. Not an issue at all. Learn the basics before you use a unit that starts throwing all the new age stuff in your face. I still use turntables myself. I have a pioneer mixer so I can use dvs for newer tracks but much prefer the simplicity in the setup and the skill involved makes it more fun.

Already bought the DDJ-400. Enjoying it so far. Thanks guys!👍
1100. it’s 2.6k now can you please build more pls
Hi @DJSchoolAmsterdam,
Thanks for this video. Good comparison.
A couple of questions please which would help me more to decide between these 2. Could you please answer them
1. I am looking for a gear for home purpose and home studio. For clubs, mostly we get a gear already installed there. So if I practice and make sets on ddj400 at home, can I export that set to usb and take it to club and use it in pioneer gear present there.?
2. If searching song on xdj rr is difficult, can't we connect laptop with xdj rr and use it for song search just like ddj400.?
3. Also as someone asked below, how about FLX6.? Is it really something which has everything from DDJ400 or something is missing there.?
I set my mind on DDJ400
Any gear would do for me if i had one....
hi mate one question Im new in the DJ world im a beginner
i would like to buy one of these , what do you recommend for a beginner the DDJ 800 OR XDJ RR thank you
I know both equipment are different and what is the best.to my experience
and great video
Hi Zac, we recommend going for the RR since it is stand-alone. It means you do not need a computer to run it, and makes the setup less complex.
@@DJSchoolAmsterdam thank you so much , pls make more videos :)
to care about how it looks .. is stupid! what is professional, is defined by your skills, not what equipment you use and HOW IT LOOKS!
I agree on your definition of a professional, it is not defined by gear. On the other hand, If you can choose, it can be an argument to go for a more robust and more 'professional' looking set. Some would choose it as a personal preference, some might choose it because of the impression they want to make. If this should be defined as 'stupid' is a very personal opinion.
is playing on the xdj-rr similar to playing standard club cdjs? because i want to have the same style of playing when im at home and when playing in a club
Yes it is, we recommend this kind of XDJ gear because of the simularities in playing with CDJs, this makes switching between your gear and playing in clubs with CDJs easy.
I am planning to be a mobile dj. Should I get a ddj-400 or should I get the RR? I like the ddj 400 price.
Hi Nicholas. It's a big difference if you play with the computer (laptop) or without. At the DJ School, we prefer playing from a USB stick and without the computer. It's less trouble and less wires. And usually you have less contact with your audience when you play from a computer. But actually, you would have to see what works for you. The DDJ-400 is a good buy and gives the same options for less money. And as there is no typing-option on the RR, you might get songs quicker when you typ them in your RekordBox Search on the laptop. Good luck with making a choice!
Thank you for your help :-)
The ddj 400 is cheaper... But you'll need a decent laptop to run rekordbox. Cheapo laptops just can't do it. You want at least 8gb ram and a 4th gen i5 minimum. I run rekordbox dvs with an i7 4600u and 8gb ram and it's fine.
@@D_2_da_K87 i have i3 7100u and 12 ram.is that good for rekordbox?
@@yuumi4871 yeah that's a new cpu. Should be fine. Rekordbox spec states a core 2 duo should run it as minimum spec. A new i3 should be home plenty the ram is more than enough
IDK IF YOU NOTICED BUT THERES A SCREEN ON THE OTHER ONE.
Van First Ride PS4 controller but it was
Money talks :)
