  • How has the social changes that has occurred during the last 30 years in China affected the way Chinese men and women view their roles in family and society? To find out, Eileen does street interviews of random Chinese people and ask: who has it harder in contemporary Chinese society - men or women? Some answers might surprise you! Video also serves as good Chinese listening practice. Our Chinese street interview videos are meant to introduce you to the real spoken Chinese not textbook made-up conversation. Learn real Chinese.

    It's always nice to get another perspective on interesting questions. It's also funny how sometimes they immediately contradict what they've just said.

      Actually I made the same experience. When you are in a relation with an Asian girl and you ask her which resaurant you want to go to she often says: you decide. And this applies to a lot of situations in life. Basically as a man you are the director/ leader of the relation and you decide which way to go. It´s quite annoying for men.

      Hi! 其实视频中的英文并不是完全照字面翻译的,翻译的过程中,我们尽量将意思表达清楚,至少英文部分是清晰易懂的。They're not translated literally. 所以,如果你只想听懂中文,还是需要做些努力,英文只是方便某些级别稍低的学生理解的。
      If you still worry that you might cheat when you watch the video with English. What you can do is to get the transcript and delete the English, then listen to the video with your transcript without English. Hi Ilyas! Try to look up words you don't understand on your dictionary. A good doctionary app to download is Pleco. We cannot provide definition on every single word as we do not know which word you or others may not understand. That's why we just provide Pinyin.
      What you probablly want is Literal Translation (every single word is given a direct translation), and we did that on the videos found on the following playlist: ua-cam.com/video/g3U9lDBdln8/v-deo.html

    Only beeing a Panda is easy living. No need to work, can sleep every time, get food, all people find Panda cute. Panda can do stupid things, falling down from a tree for example, but everybody like it, make photos and post it on social media. Panda never needs to make selfies, because other people will do this for him.

    Eileen, this was great. You have a natural talent as an Interviewer. The editing of this piece was really nice too. It was fun to hear the variety of opinions. And this format really suits me as I can vary between looking at pinyin, hanzi, or English while listening. It really helped me remember a lot of vocab that I had learned in the past but forgotten already. Thanks for all your hard work! There are a very few people who I consider UA-cam treasures, and you are definitely one!!!

    *TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video *5% at a time* on *desktop computers and laptops* OR *25% at a time* on *smartphones!*
    Access the playback speed controls as follows:
    *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the *lower right* of the video's screen and click on the *settings icon* (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link *"custom".* Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
    *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the *upper right* of the video's screen. You will see *3 dots.* Click on them and you will see the link to open the *"playback speed"* controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you *greater control* over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

    I am a German without any mandarin knowledge. What the hell am I doing here? The interviewer is top nodge. She never lets people escape. In a way she is very German, direct, to the point, challenging. I like her style. One question here is again very couragious. Would you want to be woman or man next life? Guess I went through both tenthousend times, but in this one I am man and I go with this one woman, who is just curious and wants to be a man next time. So I vote for woman, vote for the pain of childbirth, but I would not want to age like most woman, yet there are some, who do it nicely. In the end "Scheißegal, scheißegal, ob du Huhn bist oder Hahn...."

      Why, it is true.. Many women haven´t grown up having to choose, it is a healthy challenge that they have been denied, a little like spoiled kids. So it is just the norm that many girls want the guy to make the decisions.. If anything you should be saying men should stay away from women who cannot make any decisions, let them get situations where they will gain from making decisions... Or just be with them and stage those situations

    The people interviewed many of them are so open! I was specially moved by the guy who said that he would experience childbirth, he may not be able to be a woman in this life, but he is surely a complete human with that intent.
    I may be wrong but I'm under the impression that most men in the West would answer that they would be men again without hesitation, just pure machismo, since in the West being called a "girl" is such a big insult still. Very awesome video and super fun to watch.

    Wanna? I have now seen this translation not only on this channel but in Chinese Costume Drama subtitles. Perhaps it comes from some kind of pop culture, like anime translations or something, but it is not standard English. 20 year olds in the USA might use it in text chats. As a native English speaker, I find this useage jarring.
    Different topic: i notice that Mandarin does not rely very much on “borrowed” words. English borrows words from every language on the planet-Mandarin seems more like French in that they find ways within the language to describe a concept or product that comes from elsewhere. Interesting.

    Don't men also have to raise children in China? Don't they want their values to be passed on to their children? Are we in the 21st century or what?

    • @Ccb88888
      @Ccb88888 3 роки тому

      @Cameron C You don't know what culture I'm from, so don't make assumptions. Not all 'foreigners' are Westerners. If you feel a need to insult the West- be my guest- I don't think Westerners really give a toss about what you think....... I've lived in China for several years, and have very little trust in Chinese govt statistics. Domestic violence is probably underestimated all over the world, and especially in China.

    • @Ccb88888
      @Ccb88888 3 роки тому

      @Cameron C You are being overly sensitive, and quite frankly, rude. Read my original statement- I did not compare China with any country, I merely stated that In the video, it would appear that given that many Chinese men seem to think that the responsibility of raising children rests solely ( or mainly) with the mother, their values would not be passed onto their children. Most of the world ( including in Asia) has moved beyond that. Modern men (not just in the West but elsewhere) very much want to be involved in passing values onto their children.
      As for not trusting Chinese statistics-many people all over the world do not. Many also do not trust the West.
      Frankly, I don’t really understand why you are so pissed off. I also do not understand why you interpret my criticism of a specific behaviour as criticism of China as a whole.

    I think this is why people move to the western countries and try to adopt western culture. Women are respected and men have to work and still help at home. Men that work then go home and sit on their butt and do nothing are likely heading for a divorce. Need to learn to treat your wife as your partner and help as much as you can and treat her as more than just a maid.
