I just wanted to add, that you should keep the air pump higher than the container of water or install a check valve of some sort, in case the pump were to stop working or a power outage were to occur. If the pump is lower than the containers of water (or water level technically), the water will flow back to the pump. Great videos and presentation.
Good advice, though That would only happen if the tube is coming out the bottom of the bucket. Going in through the top, the water will only rise up the tube to the level of the water’s surface when the air stops flowing. To get it to siphon, you’d need to apply suction to draw the water over the top and far enough down the tube to be lower than the level of the water in the bucket.

The #ELI5 build explanation was painful to watch but understandable. What was not at all was how to put it into action. 30 seconds on how high to fill the system, nutrient mix and maintenance would complete this video. Hopefully you can edit.
I know this is a 4 year old comment... I knew of this method as "Bubbleponics". The issue with the way he is doing it is the roots have to grow out of the rockwool and into the water, until the roots get that big they are not going to get any water. You have to bring the water to the roots with a drip irrigation system. I guess you can fill the bucket all the way to the rockwool, but now the rockwool will be submerged in water the entire time (root rot waiting to happen), and that tiny air stone is not going to supply oxygen to the roots in the rockwool...
Good set up but make sure you use a black bucket. Roots should never see light. I made this mistake when I was just getting started by using white or orange buckets from Home Depot and my roots kept dying. Also change out the water every two weeks. Just because you’re blowing air in it with a pimp, doesn’t mean you’re filtering it. Those are two different things... just doing those two things helped my growing tremendously. Two other thing you need to get down, PH and nutrients.
Hey, a lot of the videos talk about cheap setups in terms of the containers but no one (at least as far as I've seen) mentions cheap fertilizer options. All the fertilizers I've seen are pricey and I was wondering if you had any suggestions regarding minimizing costs. Thanks!
Thank you for clearing the rock wool info for me, I was hoping that it was the same product but not to worry. Here in Bulgaria hydroponics is a pretty new concept so finding the materials like rock wool, and the chemical hydroponic feeds is near impossible unless you import the products. any way thanks again all the best JT

R0793 water level should be just below basket. Enough for the roots to reach water. Do not submerge the basket.
Hi I’m interested and a total newbie, I’ve never grown a plant of any sort but I’m starting to read about hydroponics, my question is how you check for ph level with that setup and does water need to be drained and refreshed every two to four weeks.
I hear lots of people say Food Grade Plastic, but aren't painters buckets, most storage totes and milk jugs all HDPE? I always thought that any container with a number 2 in a triangle on the bottom was the same.
Dr.Thrumpkinz III They are HDPE, and I have never found there to be an issue because you are not heating the bucket up.
Do you have any videos on cheap lightning for such a setup? First time on your youtube site and I noticed you didn't offer a lighting system for it, other than your current lighting. Thanks
Can you do a video on the kraktky method?
I am going to try it i think ill do the 3 way thank you
