- After a lot of testing with the balansports on the vw battery modules i finally come up to that those modules and balansports will work just fine with the Orion BMS.
And in this video it is time to install the wire harness that I have created for it.
I have also done o long term test were one cell was way of in my friends battery and the Bms was balancing in 8 days.
The maximum balance current that I measured during the test was 151mA at 3,9v
I highly recommend this bms, especially if you convert a fossil car to an ev car. It feels like it is built for that in the first place.
Been looking at doing this myself, as 5kwh battery's cost a lot of money (£1000-1500) but car ev battery that has around 50kwh capability is generally only £2500-£3000 + a bms
But I prefer to get it to normal Inverter voltages (48v or 62v system)
Yes, I understand you. My first Batteri battery I ever built was from a Volkswagen e-up and I reconfigure the cells to match with a 48 V inverter it was an interesting project though. 14s14p lion.
Köpt bms direkt av orion eller via återförsäljare?

Very nice and clean set up 👍👍
If I were to set up my system again, it would also be a high-voltage system =)
Thank you so much😃
Yes, 400 V make a huge difference in efficiency and also a bigger possibility to sell the excessive power from the panels to the grid. Thank you so much for your comment.😊
How or where did you find the pinning for the LG cells? I want to read data out the cells but I can't find anything yet 😢
I just measured the module myself. Here is a video on the 12s module I measured, I plan to do the same with the 8s later.

Very well done! However, I do not understand why you do all this changes. Why not just use the original BMS? You need a "translation" device to your inverter anyway, don't you?
Thanks! Sadly not possible you need the rest of the car… canbus security code change around every 10sek from what I’ve heard, I promise you, I tried. This is one year ago now so maybe something new has been developed. Let me know if you find anything 😉
@@flyingtools Ahhh....I see. I didn't think about that. I am just trying to use an entire Nissan Leaf battery as a PV storage based on this project: ua-cam.com/video/XHZWGLzT7gg/v-deo.html.
Apparently there you don't have such problems. I can freely talk to the BMS.
Yes, those batteries are easy to take control over, Vw is like Fort Knox 😅 But the quality of the cells are great.
Hi, Can you say what type of relays you use iniside the battery VW original or else and what orion bms signal controll them ? PIN 7:27 6 - " Charger Safety" or something else ? Thank you. Get my Orion already and battery will arraive next week..so try to be ready as possible :)
Hi.
I use the Vw original relays. I do not remember which pin I used to control them but the Orion bms comes with a very easy understandable installation manual so you will find it there.
Good luck with your project and be careful ⚡️⚡️.☺️
nice, I get my battery 108 cells working whir orion bms. Your videos was great help. About originaö VW HV DC realys, they draw 680 mA each when active, Orion bms max per channel is 500 mA. Did you use some extra low mA relay before original relay or output is realy more powerful than spec
@@evarraudsepp874 I connected my relays in series. It works but you can probably not take out 300 A from them when they are connected like this, but I only drawing 30 amps out of them so I think that there will not be any problem. So far it has been working just fine for over 8 months now.
But of course, you can also use a 12 V relay to activate high voltage relays.
Have you tried measuring the voltage between the battery positive terminal and the battery frame when the Solax is active? For some reason, there seems to be voltage present between them. Could it be because the Orion 2 BMS is grounded to the frame? I have two such setup ID3 batteries, and both show voltage between the battery positive terminal and the casing when the inverter is active. However, when the inverter is off and the battery relays are still activated by the BMS, there is no voltage. I'm not sure myself why this is happening. Maybe you know? Or IS your battery act Same way. Thank you!
Just so nice and tight work ,looks amazing
Thank you so much 😃
08:09 some red plastic broke off the relay - Too cold for that plastic!
Haha, you are right, extremely good eyes there👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks for watching👍🏻
. i have A3 etron battery - i want to do offgridhome small system - i need your recomndation for BMS and inverter if you can
All I can recommend is what I have tested and used here on my channel.
Fantastic! Feel free to send a message if you need help with microcomputer/Linux/programming/home assistant
Wow! Thank you so much 😃👍🏻
nice 😊
Thanks😃
Wauw, this will be a good battery for your home!! May i ask you what you've paid for this battery, and why you got it? were there some issues with this battery?
Great videos by the way!!
Yes this battery are great but also dangerous. I would never buy a battery with issues.
You can buy them from junkyards at around 70000-10000eur.
You are just incredible! Keep on going!
😅 Thank you so much 😃
Vilket mästerverk! 🤩
Väldigt imponerande bygge! 👏👌
You could try using GPT-4 to program the controller for you. Real programmers are cheating now to use it so you might as well too.
Aha ok 😃
I have to google it😆
Thank you so much for the tip😃👍🏻
Good job! Where did you buy orion BMS? How much did it cost? Have a nice day!
Thanks 😃
LithiumSystems in Switzerland 1800euro +Swedish tax 25%
9:58 Isn't the selected battery cell different or doesn't it matter ?
That’s the default setting in cell chemistry etc. I that because it was the closest to my Vw cell chemistry then I adjusted the rest of the settings manually.
Can you recommend a hybrid solar inverter that definitely communicates with the Orion 2 BMS (using same CanBus protocol)? Have you found one? I have emailed Solax hundreds of times and they dont know what protocol is used on the inverter they actually manufacture, crazy....I dont want to buy the Solax if unsure that will communicate with the Orion BMS. Do you still use your Solax in lead acid mode and why? Whats the difference? Constant low current? Thank you so much.
Orion do not have any cambus protocol at all to talk to any inverter. You have to do that coding yourself in to the Orion bms. Solax of course know their own protocol they just want tell… just like any other manufacturer. Yes, still in lead acid mode. What do you mean with a constant low current? I can pull 15 kW completely off grid with a battery voltage at 500v at 30 amps. No solar, so what do you mean?
@@flyingtools First, thanks for your quick replay. I am probably becoming annoying with all my questions but in the middle of desinging my project and would like to learn from your experiense. What do you actually use to charge the WV batteries? Is the Solax ineverter? Whyis it in lead acid mode? Or do you have a separate lead-acid battery charger hooked to the ORION BMS? Where does the Orion BMS takes voltage to charge the batteries from and how did you charge the batteries before installing the Orion? Perhaps some of the answers are in your videos, will watch them all today. Thanks for doing them. It saves a lot of reseach time. I just want to find a proper charger to hook to the ORion and to charge the li-ion batteries, prefferably an hybrid inverter as I will be installing solar panels as well. Thanks a lot. Ross
@@flyingtools please ignore the previous questions. I watched few more of your videos and i think i got it. So you are charging your battery with the SOLAX in lead acid mode (76kOhm ntc hooked to the BMS port allowes to do that) and you have preset manually voltage and currect in the inverter. You used to check voltage on idividual cells manually but now the ORION does that and the BMS is there only for safety to discconect thanks to the relays if something happens, but the ORion is not charging your battery, just monitors- correct? Also is the SOLAX using solar energy to charge the battery, i presume so? Can the SOLAX be programmed to charge the battery at night from grid when electicity is much cheaper if no sun was available during the day?
You can do pretty much whatever you want with this inverter, it’s very versatile.
Please download the manual for Solax, and you will find all your answers in that one it’s pretty much straightforward and easy to understand.
It is really an amazing set up!!! HV scares me the most, but soon or later one will have to face the issue. Your videos are really inspiring!! Especially the care you take handling the battery, BMS, etc.
Thank you so much😃 HV scares me to, and that’s probably a good thing.
Have a nice day sir😊
HV IS DANGEROUS SURE , but DC16S with hight capacity is also very dangerous , when i touch at this you need care , care and care again , think at all before made a moove , i personnaly use silicone glover on a silicone carpet with a protection mask on face , need also work with very good ambiant light . to connet BMS wires i also try use self lock connector , one think is requiring a lot of care , it's respect the bms cells wirings ; 102 cells mean 103 wires !!! a error can kill bms instant . the battery require be able undersand where are all cases can kill you , dc current is 100X more dangerous than AC
Unbelievable stuff
Looks good 👍
Sitter intill powersupply kontakten.
Nice 👌
Thanks😊
Any suggestions where can be found used EV batteries for building solar storage? All that I can find sells more than brand new, so there is no point getting those. Any tips?🤔
I bought from junkyards. Please be careful, those batteries are dangerous.
Isn't he Battery itself have balance terminals available from the outside of the battery? I didn't understand why you had to make one.
It only canbus out from the battery. And it’s a coded protocol that only will work together with that specific car it was sitting in. That’s why I wasn’t able to have this internal BMS to work.
Have you got the orion bms communicating with solax inverter? or is it still in lead acid mode?
Working in it. 11:41
How was the Battery Management taken care of before this Orion arrived ?
Only manual measuring. I have some videos about that to. I only used it between 30% and 70% to be on the safe side. Thanks for your question 😊
Great work👍
Thank you Milan. Btw, i finally realised what you meant about the “post” comment, it just took one day to understand, stupid me😂😂😂
Have a great day😊
@@flyingtools 😁
Ingenious work. 👍
You have wrapped up the cable monster very nicely. 😁
The BMS power supply, you can take directly from the battery permanently.
I have it the same way. 400VDC is converted to 24VD via WDR-120-24 from Mean Well, which has an input voltage of 200-500V and an output of 24V.
Costs approx. 50€. Don't be confused by the fact that it says AC input. It eats everything and makes its own internal frequency to convert the voltage down.
I got this tip from my friend who is a specialist for industrial emergency power supply (companies, banks, hospitals...).😉
Hello sir, have you found the CAN bus protocol for the Solax inverter?
Thank you 😃
Wow, that’s great information. I will definitely check that out.
Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@milan2931 Yes, I found it. Please see the comments from the previous video. I gave the link for my cloud storage there
@@RichardSteigmann I've been looking, I've been looking, I haven't found anything. I think I've got operational blindness😅
