- Matt’s Toyota Crown was jumpstarted the wrong way at the docks, which unfortunately destroyed the hybrid system.
Today we help him fix it so he is finally able to make the long journey home in his new Japanese import!

Benny's Custom Works brings you everything automotive!
Weekly Episodes right here on UA-cam, as well as the shop with new & used performance parts for most Japanese makes and models.
Benny makes this stuff look like a walk in the park. Please consider the risk factors and talk to a qualified mechanic, as well as a psychologist, if you’re thinking of attempting anything you’ve seen on the show.
Take into consideration your safety, the safety of others, as well as your vehicle’s best interests- warranty, etc.
Unless you’re trained & qualified to do so, we don’t recommend modifying your vehicle in any way. Stickers don’t add HP unless installed correctly. - Авто та транспорт
Get Matt on more often - the banter between you two was gold! Fun episode and its trippy to see how Toyota did some of their early hybrid stuff, especially on these series Crown's.
Gian definitely needs to give Mel some tips on how to do camera magic (I heard she's already into photography) and Matt definitely needs his own UA-cam channel.
Jarad can just always lurk in the background or talk when things are in front of his face. We can call him Jarad Pole.
Hands down the best Toyota Crown Hybrid channel on all of youtube!
Love getting a peek into the inner workings of these (at least where I live) super rare cars.
"Benny The Oil Change Guy" Proceeds to remove the oil filter with a pry bar and a ball pein hammer 😂😂😂 Love your work brother, %#@& the haters!
That's one hell of a selection of filter cups! I've just got a big mean filter strap from when I was a truck mechanic, that and my half-inch drive breaker bar can undo ANY filter.
Benny you should have a guest in the shop you rip the piss out of at least once every 6 months 🤣
Benny is no 'oil swap n go" bloke he has the best Crown Hybrid channel on the internet.....and next week he will show you how to supercharge a Prius with 2 AA batteries for twice the performance...lol
"Helping" a friend and abusing them is definitely the best kind of help
This guy needs a channel, just saying
Aussie hoovie?
Yeah 💯
The adventures of superted!
Office nerd tv
Benny, if it's any comfort, I personally don't think you're just an oil and filter changer only kind of guy :) haha.
P.S. Can I just say that Matt is a champ on camera!
Installation is reverse of removal. Classic.
I'm sitting here listening to this bloke and thinking, where do i know him from? Hi Mathew. Long time no see. Good work. Keep it up.
Always good to have a mate heckling you as you work, so the job takes twice as long. :D
"Rip the bae apart?" Geez... Yeah, Golden Week here in JP, complete with Strong Zeros reduced filter
Under bonnet banter 3:00 ish to 4:00 so good
Noice. and nice kei truck spot at the end. So good
excellent oil filter change. BTW Matt was great and I would love to see more of you two hanging and doing stuff and maybe things
Thoroughly enjoyed this Ted talk 👌
I do like that Matt is going to the effort to wear the HV gloves, but they're only really required for 60V or higher, and once the safety disconnect has been removed and the capacitors discharged, they're not really required, unless you're opening up a HV battery. There are normally cotton gloves that you wear under the rubber gloves to avoid swamp hands.
They’re a bit of a tongue in cheek joke, a few comments popped up on a vid we did ages ago about needing HV gloves on hybrids
The banter this episode was top tier, Sassy Benny was quite enjoyable.
Denso smoke is SO MUCH rarer than Lucas smoke, you blokes are lucky. Actually, I reckon that would be a good series, Benny gets himself a Triumph TR8 and swaps a good, non-shit V8 into it! Maybe the 3.2 litre out of the mid-late 90s Jaguar XJ8?
May as well just put a 3uz in at that point.
@@BennysCustomWorks Or a built 2GR
Quality banter
I love the banter between you legends!
This guy has ENERGY
Hey hope he gets this back to Queensland alright
If I was going to do a crazy custom build Benny would be my first call. 😂
Oil changer my arse.
Yeah, but it's how you change the oil filter Benny...😅
Never seen Teddy get his hands this dirty since the 6x6 days. That car gave me ptsd
‘Mild Hybrid’ sounds like a menthol cigarette.
Good to see Al in gods country 😁
Haha the guard bit made me laugh 😂😂😂
JFC hit the like button people, help the fella out!
this is really interesting
The Frantic Mechanic
I wonder if you could upgrade the hybrid battery and it would increase range etc 😊🤔
The hybrid is basically a fancy stop start system
How does that have stop start lol so cool
Crazy I never knew Toyota had a BAS hybrid (had to Google it) i only knew of Honda's IMA. Wonder how much torque it puts out under full juice, if its worth retrofitting or can be tinkered with, commanded by haltech etc
The Noltinator.
And a TK72 is under $200 ;)
2 days work is not bad. Would have been 4 days without 10 grand of tools. They make a vise grip style oil filter tool with large curved jaws which can butcher oil filters at will
Isn’t there a coolant drain plug on the right side of the block, cylinder 6, near the bottom like the rest of the JZ motors?
Probably.
I can’t believe how small that hybrid battery is
I'm getting this impression from some of Benny's comments in this video I have been watching these episodes wrong? Am I suppose to be writing in the comments that Benny is a backyard hack and shouldn't touch the tools? That his work is 2nd rate. Even though I couldn't be a mechanics left testicle.
I think that’s how the internet works these days tbh
You wanna know which other Toyota car with both sized ATC fuse? The GR Supra trunk fuse panel! It's a bmw but yea....
The music in this vid really screams "im still a subaru guy" lol
I have this 1996 model crown in the states and need a new windshield, would you know of a good place to source one?
Hey mate, not really sorry. Glass is so hard to ship
What's your VIN / Chassis number mate?
@@BennysCustomWorks all good thanks
@@mattj2171 chassis GS151
How long do these hybrid's last? Does that battery have a live span of 10 years or something? Can you replace the batteries?
Batteries can be purchased easily enough, not sure on lifespan; always a hard question to answer.
Apart from "incorrectly", how was it jump started, incorrectly?
They put 12v+ into the inverter output directly rather than use the ( clearly marked red jump start post) by prying the cover back to expose the terminals. ( one of the 3 HV terminals that connect to the orange wrapped 3 core cable)
@@BennysCustomWorks I bet pants were shat that day!!!
I drive a 2009 Prius and have better acceleration than about half of the non-performance gas-powered cars out there. My head would spin if I could have 25% more power and torque in the electric motors. It would be even better if it had a 2-speed transmission. But hey, it has less than 100 HP and isn't embarrassing.
Did you sell this to someone in western Sydney recently? I saw a job on Airtasker for someone asking to remove and disable the hybrid system haha
hahahah no, cars running a treat up here in QLD !
No, I saw someone asking in the comments of last weeks vid how to revert to standard non hybrid setup
@@BennysCustomWorks Jerry can and a pack of redheads is all that's needed
Do those crowns come in a non-hybird model?
Yes they do
@@BennysCustomWorks And also on King Charles's head...
@@BennysCustomWorks Thanks. Any suggestions on importers to bring one in to Australia (Brisbane)?
@@DPirie speak to the guys at Iron chef , though I’m not sure the non hybrid option is eligible and there is currently no model report for even the hybrid models in the nee import scheme
You didn’t use a Wix and write the date on it.
Matt actually put the filter on while I wasted 2 hours at the DMV
Is that a 1gfe vvti?? I've never seen one in such a strange setup..
Yeah mate.
@@BennysCustomWorks Thats so wacky. And here I was thinking that the is200 was the last to get the 1G.
@@StormHawksHD Last production in 2008 according Wikipedia.
Toyota really tried to squeeze every last trick out of the box with this engine series; all 2L in displacement: 1G-E (single cam, non-crossflow) / 1G-FE (narrow angle head, non vvti) / 1G-GE (Yamaha wide head, non vvti / 1G-GZE (Yamaha wide head, supercharger), 1G-GTE (Yamaha head, twin turbocharged), 1G-GP (LPG), 1G-FE (narrow head, VVTI), 1G-FXE (narrow head, VVTI, Mild Hybrid)
All toyotas can be saved. Ive seen holes in blocks regrow new metal after receiving new oil in toyotas
Turbo upgrade? lol 😂

Did the shipping company ever accept liability, or did they just shrug their shoulders?
I’ll let you take one guess.
@@BennysCustomWorks Damn, unsurprising... 😥
Are you putting emotions in your title names to try and beat the Algorithm? lol
👍👍🔥🔥
Did any one else here static or some kind of interference?
Yeah, even our camera gear doesn’t like hybrids.
So is this an ex taxi
Sure is - x-private hire taxi.
@@mattj2171 nice I'm in Japan at the moment and I see heaps of these driving around but I didn't know they were hybrid
Moist
Out of interest. Who pays for the the car being wrongly jump started?
The owner. Always the owner…….
I know of 2 other hybrid cars that have electrical issues now only after arriving in Australia.
@@BennysCustomWorks that is awful!
Hang on, why us he into these hybrid things? Surely they suck?
Good fuel economy and such? They don't suck. Hybrids are the future. None of this fully EV crap.
The overall car is just quirky, and I like that! The hybird thing is just part of the package.
Watched because I like Crowns... wasn't here for the host/s yikes
I never even knew harmony korine liked cars
