I have been in love with this woman since I first heard this song, and watched the video, back in the eighty's. I was in High School, working at this little Pizza Joint. The owner was a huge lover of music and an entire wall was used as a big screen TV that we played MTV on 24/7. Til Tuesday's Voices Carry would come on and I would race up front, from the kitchen, to catch a glimpse of her performance. It was love at first site. LOL!
my crush in the 80's.. she still rocks it now, i could take her voice out on a date and buy it flowers and get the nerve to tell it how pretty it is, keep rockin aimee mann!!! love ya!!
As kickass as the original song is as a rock standard, she totally transformed it here into a mesmerizing beautiful ballad. This woman has it all and knows what to do with it without even trying. Even her slight awkwardness is endearing. Would love to talk with her about her inspirations/process. What a unique talent who has lost nothing to the years. Oops... now I'm just gushing! ;)
Til' Tuesday and Lone Justice are may fav '80 bands. Mann's voice is a mix between Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry, with a touch of Joni Mitchell....= PERFECTION.
Aimee teamed up with former Berklee School of Music alum (although they both left to persue music full-time...) Steve Vai on his album THE STORY OF LIGHT. The song is beautiful--they're voices compliment each other so organically. It's a lovely tune-- I hope you check it out. And thank you for posting this extraordinary version of Voices.
This is so gorgeous, I'm in physical pain right now! 🤣 I didn't think I could love this genius song more than I already did, but she found a whole new level! Just incredible! ❤️
I like it. Has that spooky, dream-like ambience that all her solo records have had since Bn2. I'm glad she's still doing her thing. I wasn't a fan of Til Tuesday, but I got hooked on her solo albums back when I was driving a lot. Always checking to see if she's got new songs or records out.
Back in the late 80's, I saw Till Tuesday at the Chestnut Cafe in Philly, and was completely blown away. That was one of the 5 best concerts I've ever been to. They played all the songs they were known for at the time, and when they ran out, the audience wouldn't let them leave the stage, so they started taking requests. I remember they played some song by Bad Finger and a Beatles tune or two. I've been in love with Aimee Mann, ever since.
This was recorded in 2005 for Apple's "iTunes Originals" series, but it's no longer available from the iTunes Store. I'm really glad I decided to buy it when it was released.
@danmang92 Don't you just love that feeling? :) Although Aimee Mann has been around since the 80s, she doesn't get the amount of exposure she deserves. It's the sad nature of mainstream media. I haven't discovered anyone worthwhile on commercial radio/TV in years. Most of the new musicians/songs I've been introduced to have been courtesy of bloggers as well as other UA-camrs. I'm glad you enjoyed and I hope you get to explore her vast discography.
@lasterain Glad you like this one. It was one of the tracks on an iTunes exclusive album. Not sure if it's still available, but if you have an iTunes account, you could try. If not, try googling "Aimee Mann iTunes exclusives" and see if any of the links help.
Stunning... I've always loved this song and this version is incredible. Always loved the song she’s way more laid back than in the 80’s, very nice Lady thank you so much!!
If this doesn't describe a young girl in love with an unavailable older man i do not know what does. Written perfectly! I was that 18 yr old for 8 yrs chasing that same kind of man.
‘Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” hit like a sledgehammer in 1985, as performed by lead vocalist Aimee Mann. She penned the lyrics*, declaring each line like an entry in a diary. There are very dark undertones in this, hinting at an abusive relationship : “I try so hard not to get upset Because I know all the trouble I’ll get” The last phrase speaks volumes : “I wish he would let me talk” “Voices Carry” was huge on MTV, showing Aimee Mann in her distinctive haircut. Like Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” (1983) clip, it uses dialogue to tell the story, opening with her boyfriend saying sarcastically, “I’m so happy the band’s doing well. And by the way, what’s with the hair?” We then see Mann rehearsing with the group, pouring her emotions into the music. The creepy boyfriend keeps berating her for having a career, even getting rough with her. When they go to Carnegie Hall to watch the symphony, Mann can’t take it anymore and has an outburst in the middle of the theater, finally expressing her pent-up frustration. This scene was based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 movie “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” where Doris Day’s character screams during a symphony to thwart a murder. The video put a different spin on the song, with Mann finding the strength to stand up to her tormentor. She claimed : “I didn’t write it as a feminist anthem, but when it came time to make the video, that idea was in the air. It was very heavy handed.” “Voices Carry” was the debut single, from the debut LP of the same name, and the greatest claim to fame for ‘Til Tuesday❕ On June 30, 2017, Aimee did “Voices Carry” at the North Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She hadn’t performed it for a while, but said, “ I feel like it’s weirdly appropriate and I’m not sure why.” This was just a few months before the #metoo movement took hold in October‼️ ❤️🩹⛓️❤️🩹 * The writing credits were shared by all members of ‘Til Tuesday.
She's awesome. It sounds really good when you change the tempo to x1.25 too (use the gear tool, then select "speed" in bottom-right corner of video window)! I think I prefer it that way.
I like the piano and the live church recording has a great back up vocal but the tempo wasn't putting out the energy. That suggestion did the trick. Ty
there used to be a UA-cam video that I had of her performing this live, pre concert..as a warmup!! it was so hauntingly beautiful!!! its not the one currently up of her in Mexico. its well before that and, like 2008 or something. and she did not have the backing like in this audio. its just her on stage with her acoustic guitar, unplugged. its simply AMAZING!!! I wish it didn't get taken down.😔☹🥺🙏
Love this version by Aimee. The LP or single was no longer available or not available to the usa on iTunes. So I searched and searched and searched OMG i searched...until I finally found "Aimee Mann iTunes originals" (320kbps) available for download from a generic file hosting site. UGH it's a password protected rar. Whew! Found the password without having to do some lame spam survey or some other crap. lol. I am now a very happy camper. BTW, Thanks for posting this video :-)
I live in Portland and she has toured here many times. Always go. Wondering if this recording is recent? She also does a slow acoustic version of Red Vines that is amazing too.
Such a sad song. I used to sing along as a kid, in primary school, (yeah that young), not understanding that she was singing about an abusive partner until today in my thirties, listening to it again, and then really listening. What really got to me was the part when she said she told him she loved him and he said, "Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry." Those words would have made me turn on my heel and out of that potential relationship. The end that she wished that he would let her speak is poignant one.
As rocking as the original Til Tuesday version is... this is one of those rare few songs that offers just as much redone into an acoustic version. This is simply beautiful... like Aimee.
Love, love, LOVE the slowed-down, acoustic version of this song. Wish she'd record it in the studio - better yet, her music would make a fantastic unplugged album!
I've never heard this acoustic version before. I have to say WOW it's amazingly beautiful In the dark I like to read his mind...but I'm frightened of the things I might find...
@ Derek De Vette This track was available for download exclusively through Apple back in the mid 2000s. It was part of their "iTunes Original Versions" series. Sadly, I don't think it's available anymore.
Any guitarist/musicians (as if those are 2 different things!) have any idea what kind of FX are on this spooky guitar in the back? Not the feedback, I know how to do that, but the very first guitar lick you here is a spooky/metallic sound. Just a ton of reverb?
Like I said in my opinion Aimee is what good music and good art is about she plays whats in her heart and whats good not what the shirts and ties say will sell millions of records she sells good music with good lyrics.
In July of 86 I was in sitting in a bar in the village, when this beautiful girl and her boyfriend sat next to me. I had no idea at the time who they were. Until a video came up on the tv. It was night to remember.
Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I can't say with certainty when it was recorded, but I do know it was released in 2005. If I had to guess, I'd say it was recorded no earlier than 2004.
I have tears running down my face. This is just so beautiful. Thank God for artists like Aimee Mann. What happened to real music with real voices.

lagaman11 , everyone was in love with her, she was the most beautiful face on mtv.
I just discovered her in Voices Carry and then some interviews, crush at first sight. Can't believe she isn't more famous
Right there with you.
And still beautiful
She’s wine
Getting better with age
A real beauty in women form
Powerful
I Saw Aimee Mann in New Haven CT, in 1985! She was Like Poetry in Motion! Awesome Show! mob😋🎸
So happy she is still making music and still has not sold out to the corporate music machine
my crush in the 80's.. she still rocks it now, i could take her voice out on a date and buy it flowers and get the nerve to tell it how pretty it is, keep rockin aimee mann!!! love ya!!

I’m 47 and when this first came out I was about 17 and loved it so much .

Yaaaas! Maria McKee was wonderful.
I describe her voice in two words. Incredibly Soothing.........................
This acoustic version is sublime!

Hauntingly gorgeous; the song is actually as poetic-truthful in this acoustic format; poetic-mystic and lovely-perfect!
Have you seen her on #Portlandia? She’s pretty funny
Love that pic!! Love her!!
Stunning... I've always loved this song and this version is incredible.
This is so gorgeous, I'm in physical pain right now! 🤣 I didn't think I could love this genius song more than I already did, but she found a whole new level! Just incredible! ❤️
Been an Aimee fan since Magnolia, one of the few artists I would fly somewhere to see.
Always loved the song she’s way more laid back than in the 80’s, very nice Lady thank you so much!!
She is absolutely amazing, every song is a piece of dessert!

+OSheaHandMade Great description...haunting and beautiful. Love the acoustic touch.

This version is giving me chills- just beautifully haunting in every way. Reminds me of my childhood
Aimee also appeared in Rush's video "Time stand still" . She was the camera girl . She also did the vocals in the chorus in that song.
rush's 1990 album is the only album i could stand of theirs.

Heard this in an independent cupcake shop yesterday, I knew what it was instantly, but had never heard this version before. AWESOME.
