there's a lot of negative comments. My girlfriend and I thought this was interesting as crap. Everyone I know tell me that I speak fast and it makes it difficult for people to understand me completely. What you said makes a lot of sense. Everyone that says you're wrong...well, they're wrong. We support you. :)

I have a hefty NY accent, and really, none of this is of any help.
You have to hear it and mimic it. It's that simple.
Btw, being that NY IS the melting pot, I can easily swing into an Irish, Boston, MA, Southern, Asian, Jewish, English, or Puerto Rican accent. Oh yes, and Eastern Indian.
However, in order to do a Scottish accent, I have to start off with an Irish one,,,,,,and first imitate my grandmoother to start.
"Shoot up ya gud damN noot, and ayt yer lamb choop", and thar we go. Instant Brogue!!

It means more like your words are aimed there... "Irish" for example is said, roughly: "oayresh" (but quickly), and if you do think about where the words land, it does feel like it is in front of your face (I'd say more like 'one inch', but yeah...)

Before critisizing this woman, who (I dont know if right or wrong) tried to explain how to speak in dialects. Remember the effort she does.
My question to expertvillage would be: How did you get to know the point of placement theory? Did you observe it by yourself or did you learn it from a book or in a course? I am really interested in that and would like to know if there already are theories about that. Thanks for answering in advance! =)

Why do you refer to different accents as "dialects?" I don't think you understand the difference between a dialect and an accent. A dialect is a form of a language that uses a significant amount of different words to make it difficult for speakers of the same language but different dialect to understand. In English there are no real dialects unless you count Scots as a dialect and not a different language, so for my example, I will use German. In Swiss German (actually a group of dialects, but they are close enough) to ask someone's name you would say, " Wie isch Ihre name?" In high German (proper Germany German) you would say, "Wie heißen ihnen?" Significant differences, but still close enough to be in the same language. An accent on the other hand is just another way of pronouncing words with a few colloquialisms thrown in. An example in English would be the Scottish, "Hoo er ya?" (I changed the spelling to show the approximate pronunciation also I showed a more northern Scottish accent which is more exaggerated) vs the standard American, "How are you?" Many Americans would understand the Scottish accent, and all Scottish people would understand the American accent (because of Hollywood).
P.S. There is nothing wrong with learning an accent through imitation. That is how I learned my American southern, northern Australian, and Cockney accents, and most natives can't tell that I'm not a native speaker.
