From Mad Men to Sons of Anarchy to Billions. She really has range and is talented. I really like her and she seems so chill. Maggie Siff has the Bronx accent right. I was listening to an old audio recording of my mother who grew up in the Bronx, and the nasal tone was there in spades.
Dobbs Ferry is right outside the "New York City" accents limit line; it really ends at Riverdale...., a little further north from there, your accent doesn't really qualify as a "New York" accent.
The accent doesn't really exist anymore. Hard to find. Its the suburbs around the city, Jersey, Long Island, etc..that still carry a heavy NY accent. The Native NYer has gotten further and further away from NYC.
@@DoggieNYC Well, I grew up in NYC and I am old enough to recognize that real NYC accent, which does vary from borough to borough and to L.I. The upper west 160s and up, and, the E. I would say that most Latino descendants of P.R. and the D.R. within the NYC Metropolitan area still maintain the NYC accent(s) in some form. Does it still exist ? Of coarse but its not as prevalent as it ounce was. To be an outsider and show up in Manhattan and expect everyone you meet to speak that way just isnt the case anymore. I find it is still prevalent and heavy with the white blue collar crowd in some parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx but mainly LI and NJ. Latinos don't carry that heavy of an accent for the most part. It depends on what's spoken at home alot of the times and how long have they been here. If your mom and dad are speaking Spanish at home, or Polish for that matter, your NY accent is not going to be that heavy. If your mom and dad are 4th generation transplants from Brooklyn, the accent is usually heavier. Any other non-white New Yorkers who understand that the Bronx is primarily populated by neutral-accented Hispanics and Blacks, yet the few white people who live there (or were raised there), ignore the dominant culture of the area? I was raised in the BX and currently live there. When someone talks about "a NY accent", or "a Bronx accent", or "a Queens accent", or a "Long Island accent", or "a Staten Island accent", what they're really referring to are accents from certain populations of white people in those areas. NYC, of course, is incredibly diverse and most people speak in a very neutral manner. Furthermore, non-whites don't typically have "NY accents", as our voices are more influenced by ethnicity and subculture (e.g. Hiphop, West Indian, African-American, and so on). This annoys me. The Bronx used to have a large, racist white population that couldn't bear the notion of immigrants coming to the area, and so the demographics have shifted drastically over time. From Wikipedia: "The 2010 Census puts the percentage of non-Hispanic Whites at 10.9% of the population." I recognize that the Bronx is a borough plagued by many problems: poverty, crime, high STD/STI rates. Hence, we need everyone to help solve these problems. White people fled the area, ignore the dominant culture, and claim Bronx identity only when it's convenient for them to do so.
Lol you live in the Bronx and can’t understand why Whites fled it? I’m White and have lived in the Bronx for 30 years. I cannot wait to get TF out of here. Neither can my Puerto Rican husband.
