As someone who works in construction and needs to drive a truck with tools and materials, all the bike lanes are super annoying, making it difficult to park or get around.
In this WYD a friend of my nieces was miraculously healed of her 5% only vision. She was 2 years without seeing, after a Novena to the Virgen de las Nieves (Virgin of the Snows) and right after having communion she was healed. WYD may have its ups and downs but there is no doubt that the Holy Spirit is working wonders and many conversions happen.

In turn I recommend to you "Anathem" by Neal Stephenson (Cryptonimicon is another novel by him and also great). "Anathem" is a masterwork of speculative fiction that draws heavily from Plato and is similar to "A Canticle for Leibowitz" in that it also is set at least partially in a monastic setting. Go to Wyoming for Cheyenne Frontier Days. It's the last week of July every summer. I refer to it as Cowboy State Fair. I've only been once, at the invitation of the national guard veterans museum in Cheyenne. I donated my husband's military collection to them after he passed, and got to ride in the donated M37 truck for one of the parades. Rooms are hard to find, so I did airbnb in Fort Collins Colorado.

I really want to hear Thursday discuss the Dune book(s). I read Dune a couple years ago as prep for the Timothy Chalamet movie adaptation and I was underwhelmed. I much preferred Lewis' Space Trilogy. Both have pacing issues, but Lewis' theological world view made the Space Trilogy much more relatable. I should caveat this and say I am not well versed in the science fiction genre.

Being one set of boots on the ground at WYD, it feels more like a festival than a real Catholic event. Overcrowded, poorly organized and irreverent. You will get to an event way early to be told it's already full because there's no way to reserve space (at least not one that's advertised). Grant you, I did not see any plastic bowls or seran wrap. The bigger issue is that most people were focused on other things than the mass, and that the way of the cross had interpretive dance as well as borderline secularist messaging at some stations. Despite going to the welcoming ceremony, I've seen the pope as much as most people as home could. 95% of the people at the main park have no line of sight to the stage, so you're stuck watching the screens (which means you might as well have not waddled 30-40 mins through the crowd from the metro). I am so very thankful I didn't take this as my vacation, and instead decided to go on a longer seven week trip. I would actually be depressed coming back from one week of this.
No Oreos please. I'd eat one, but stopping there is difficult. For me, desserts have to pass a damage to deliciousness ratio that makes it worth the hit. Many deserts are more appealing and less damaging than Oreos.
If I were an atheist, I might put forth a utilitarian argument that society operates best by striving for the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people and that widespread slavery obviously is not conducive to this. There are plenty of problems with utilitarianism that I would have to contend with, however. Personally, I think our instinctive belief in an objective morality inevitably points to an intelligent Creator.
