Thanks for everything. I’m finally in my own “flow” with everything, and with your mixing and mastering tips I really am pleased with the quality of the final production. GarageBand is awesome, only because I learned so much about how to utilize all of it here. I was giving up Pete - I was counting on your videos to encourage me to continue working with the recording process. I learned to trust the process and to take my time with each step. I thoroughly watched so many of your videos, even over and over again, until I was confident with what to do. This is the one thing in my life where time flies and the day is over before I know it, and I’m rejoicing in a sense of accomplishment that I don’t get anywhere else. I only have one mastered track from GarageBand iOS so far, but I’m mixing my second original now and have so much planned to record. It’s going great. So thank you Pete for everything. You alone had the biggest helping hand in my music production.
Tip for beginner: A very good tip is to learn to improv out a decent sounding melody, and then refine it as you go. That will massively improve your workflow and inspire you more than just placing notes in the interface.
Arranging on the fly as you write songs has been the norm since MIDI was invented. New generation of songwriters get inspired exactly as you are describing here, to make ‘Beats’ Pete. So, if you are truly sitting down to compose, its really important to state your goal before you start sequencing in any DAW. I.e.-“ I need an intro, I need a verse, I need a chorus, a bridge etcetera”. Keep up the good work Pete.
Good points. I have mixed feelings about how easy it is to create. I think it has definitely lowered the bar for more people to create more music, but as you say; it is also important to finish songs, and not just make a whole pile of 8 bar “beats”.
Hi Pete. Thank you SO MUCH for this and other Garage Band videos. I am new to GB and have watched a couple of them over the last two (lockdown) days. They are so useful and very well put together. Appreciate your efforts!

I love your videos, I’ve learned so much already to improve and expand my GB usage and I know I’ll be learning more from you!! Also using Amuse for distribution👍🏽
I didn't understand your answer to the question you got about copyrights and loops. You said not to use four different loops but then said to use two. Four would be more complex than two, therefore more unique which would be less likely to be flagged right?
Can’t remember what exactly I said, but the point is to use at least two and change some parameters or effects to make loops more unique and less likely to match anyone else’s release. So yes, four would be even better.
@@PeteJohnsMusic I sure did!I felt pretty much defeated and was already gonna give up because all of my mixes and guitar tones sounded very muddy and muffled.I remembered your channel and you got me back on the right track and for that I will be forever grateful for gents like yourself taking the time to show all of us newbies how to use GarageBand correctly!I would like to send one of the tracks I am currently recording to see what you think of how it came out,but I wouldn’t know where to send it to.
Sometimes a pad sits on top of the music - especially in Imagine Dragons’s newest album Origins. The pads are the lead instruments in that album. Well, maybe the drums are, but if we ignore the drums
Hi Pete, after watching your video, I still do not know how you monitored your voice with your earphone since you only have one external plug to plug in an external microphone. Where do you plug your earphone to monitor the voice? I want to record my voice using iPhone 12 and monitor my voice on a earphone at at same time. I just do not know what device will allow me to do that. Thanks.
Hey there. If your device doesn’t have a headphone jack you’ll either need to use a set of headphones with a microphone or some sort of audio interface. ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/PifesXiqCf4/v-deo.html

Hi Pete this is Fredy from India and I need a solution that I m doing project in garage band in iPhone 6 s plus it allows me to add only 21 tracks I need to add further bass and some stuffs I don’t have channel to add in please give me a suggestion what can we do .
Pete, in GarageBand on iPad, when you first create and also duplicate, say a ‘vocal track’, is there a way to link up all the controls, so when you move one setting (like reverb or track volume, compression, etc) that both tracks will change simultaneously ? Thanks, Pete !!
Hey there my friend. Unfortunately not and I’ve found this a challenge in the past too. What I do in this case is duplicate to get them the same, then if I make changes on one, I re-duplicate and then move the audio to the new track and remove the old. A little more clunky but it works.
I’m trying to record some garage band instruments over a basic vocal and guitar audio recording. I can hear the recording but it’s all one loop and I can’t record anything over it??????
As I record something a few seconds later starts to play the recording as I’m still recording it into the background so now it’s recording to the same thing very annoying. How do you stop this and why does my GarageBand app look nothing like yours?
Hello Mr. pete , i want to learn how can i make pop song and edm , and i really don't know how can i make lyrics , vocal with it , i mean how can i make it fit with music background . I am totally beginner i want your help in lyrics , should i write lyrics can fit with melody or make lyrics then melody . i really confused and sorry if my english weake . thank you so much .
For your other question about whether to write lyrics first or make the instrumentals first, that is entirely up to you. Different artists do it different ways. Some even do both ways at different times. I would suggest for a simple mainstream-style song it’s easier to do music first and lyrics later, but for more complex songs it’s easier to do lyrics and structure first so you have an outline for the music and don’t forget to create a section lol
Hello there my friend. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for your question. It can be hard to write songs when you are starting out. The best advice I have is to write as often as you can to get as much practice as possible. Exactly how you do it will vary as different methods work for different people. What o do so make sure I have a melody line for my vocals before I start actually writing lyrics, meaning I develop the rhythm and melody first and then find words to fit. Check out some of my songwriting videos here on the channel to see how I do this.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you very much. It became clear to me. I did not know this. I mean, I have to have the melody before I start the project. You really helped me. Thank you.
Yes, you’ll need an audio interface that has stereo line out for this. I recommend the Steinberg UR22C but have other recommendations and options over at studiolivetoday.com/gear
I apologize for bombarding you with questions but let’s say that I’m hiking out in the wilderness somewhere (hiking is a hobby of mine) and I hear a sound that I want to record. Could I record it onto my iPhone (ex: Voice Memo) or would I have to record it through Audio Recorder in GarageBand?
Hey Pete so I was gonna ask u a lil question about copyright, someone sent me a beat, and I made a song over it, but he gave it for free, it’s a hip hop beat, it has no tags, how do I make sure he won’t try to claim it? Thanks man
Hey there my friend. So, this is a tough one. In terms of him making a manual claim once you release it, this would be possible but tough to prove. Do you have correspondence from him saying you could use it free and without paying royalties? Trouble is that most of the time it’s not as clear as this. In short though, it would be hard for him to make a claim unless he had released his best previously. On that topic, the other issue is an automatic Content ID claim, which is mostly on UA-cam. If you were going to release to UA-cam, what I would do is upload an unlisted video of just the beat and leave it there for a day or two. If there is a content ID match you will get a notification and then you’ll know that it may have been released by him or someone else before. I know this is really unclear and it’s one of the challenges for those making, and using, beats.
Hi. I have just bought an iPad and what I really want to do is to attached a midi keyboard so I can easily change sounds while performing live. But there is no monitor output for the preset sound files - how can I do this. I was trying to use Garage Band buy is there another app more suited for this? So basically I will have my sounds all set up and then just have to touch the relevant pad / track to change to the sound I need.
Hey Peter. You’ll want at least an iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4 or any iPad Pro so you can run iPadOS and the latest version of GarageBand (2.3.8). I suggest a minimum of 32gb or storage. 64/128 if you can afford it. This video should help you with more information. ua-cam.com/video/7gQNcumP6_g/v-deo.html

What I want to do is put the drummer then play my keyboard and record it but when I connect it to my iPhone the sound goes away and it does now record.. I have to record my piano first can you help me with that ?
Howdy. So, are you plugging in a MiDI keyboard and therefore can’t play back the audio through headphones? Not quite sure that’s what you are asking so perhaps provide some more information.
Pete Johns so what I wanna do is first put a drum track then play over it with the keyboard but once I connect it the sound goes off.. I’m using a lighting cable to connect it to the piano and iPhone
Yep. If your iPhone/iPad has a headphone jack try connecting to that. Otherwise you might need to consider a device like this. ua-cam.com/video/MEpidfMLUqI/v-deo.html
I’ve actually never heard of an “iCloud lock” before sorry? Not sure what that means? Any iPad should be able to be reset to factory settings unless it is locked to a particular cellular carrier, and that’s only the ones with cellular data.
Pete Johns Aw, thanks tho. Would i be able to reimport them as a single track into garage band to record vocals over the whole thing, and if so, how would it be done? Imovie? Sorry im so new to this but so eager
Yeah no problems! Yep, what you do is export both tracks, then create a new track and import your two original tracks, one directly after the other. You can then use this as he basis for your song. It sounds harder than it is. I should make a video about t actually!
Pete Johns Oh thank you! If you made a video that would be extremely helpful, im trying to write in a genre of music that is notorious for tempo changes (Hardcore) and this would be a godsend

Its easy just practice
Great video - can u please do one that is more for advanced users? Full song with multiple chords changes using loops and real instruments

Cheers Vincent. Yes, I was trying to fit as much as I could in to under one hour so I wouldn’t have gone quite this quickly usually. As you mentioned, you can always hit pause and try things out.
Love the way you teach, have learned alot from you..

Very welcome. 🙏
Tap autoplay with two fingers! How to know to do that? Thanks, Pete for the efforts.
Yup. Two or three for some fun and different sounds! 🙏
Hey from Dylan Newcastle Australia

@@PeteJohnsMusic I sure did!I felt pretty much defeated and was already gonna give up because all of my mixes and guitar tones sounded very muddy and muffled.I remembered your channel and you got me back on the right track and for that I will be forever grateful for gents like yourself taking the time to show all of us newbies how to use GarageBand correctly!I would like to send one of the tracks I am currently recording to see what you think of how it came out,but I wouldn’t know where to send it to.
You're so amazing Pete! I have to do a garageband loop song for school, u got any help?

Sometimes a pad sits on top of the music - especially in Imagine Dragons’s newest album Origins. The pads are the lead instruments in that album. Well, maybe the drums are, but if we ignore the drums
Hi Pete, after watching your video, I still do not know how you monitored your voice with your earphone since you only have one external plug to plug in an external microphone. Where do you plug your earphone to monitor the voice? I want to record my voice using iPhone 12 and monitor my voice on a earphone at at same time. I just do not know what device will allow me to do that. Thanks.
Hey there. If your device doesn’t have a headphone jack you’ll either need to use a set of headphones with a microphone or some sort of audio interface. ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html

I’m using the iPhone XS now and it is great for GarageBand. Here’s a few videos where I talk about my upgrade.

Good job
Thanks, and thank you for taking the time to comment.
Can you do a tutorial on how to make remix sounds?im planning to make one though
Hey there. I don’t do a lot of remix videos on UA-cam due to copyright, but have covered the FX options - ua-cam.com/video/Bg0FHdACzRs/v-deo.html
Pete Johns how about mashups though?
Hi Pete this is Fredy from India and I need a solution that I m doing project in garage band in iPhone 6 s plus it allows me to add only 21 tracks I need to add further bass and some stuffs I don’t have channel to add in please give me a suggestion what can we do .
Hey there Fredy. This video might help you with this - ua-cam.com/video/ZeloBMl4qqU/v-deo.html
Pete Johns thank you very much Pete I will be very useful
Pete, in GarageBand on iPad, when you first create and also duplicate, say a ‘vocal track’, is there a way to link up all the controls, so when you move one setting (like reverb or track volume, compression, etc) that both tracks will change simultaneously ?
Thanks, Pete !!
Hey there my friend. Unfortunately not and I’ve found this a challenge in the past too.
What I do in this case is duplicate to get them the same, then if I make changes on one, I re-duplicate and then move the audio to the new track and remove the old.
A little more clunky but it works.
Pete Johns, thank you for solidifying that; and I certainly agree with and like that workaround that you gave ! Cheers !
No problem my friend. Thanks for your support.
I’m trying to record some garage band instruments over a basic vocal and guitar audio recording. I can hear the recording but it’s all one loop and I can’t record anything over it??????
Hey there. You’ll need a new audio track to record over your backing track. Check out my videos and guides here. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Have u ever had problems with copyright if u use the loops?
Nope. As long as you’re using multiple loops and never just one at a time you’re fine - ua-cam.com/video/IIqi6TRnTk4/v-deo.html
Hi have a ipadpro & a idock 2 (help) why an't Thay compatible?
I don’t believe so? If the iPad Pro is USB-C it won’t be. I believe the iDock is Lightning based.
As I record something a few seconds later starts to play the recording as I’m still recording it into the background so now it’s recording to the same thing very annoying. How do you stop this and why does my GarageBand app look nothing like yours?
This is a pretty old video. And it’s GarageBand iOS. (In case you’re on Mac). Heck out my latest info here. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Hello Mr. pete , i want to learn how can i make pop song and edm , and i really don't know how can i make lyrics , vocal with it , i mean how can i make it fit with music background . I am totally beginner i want your help in lyrics , should i write lyrics can fit with melody or make lyrics then melody . i really confused and sorry if my english weake .
thank you so much .
If I understand you correctly, this video may help you out: ua-cam.com/video/ccn6hzAwIe8/v-deo.html
@@amaracea thank you so much , but for my question about lyrics how can i make it fit with melody did you know how ?
Again thank you
Hello there my friend.
@@PeteJohnsMusic
Thank you very much. It became clear to me. I did not know this. I mean, I have to have the melody before I start the project. You really helped me. Thank you.
thank you

Can I connect studio speakers to my 4th generation iPad? If so what else do I need to make that happen?
Yes, you’ll need an audio interface that has stereo line out for this. I recommend the Steinberg UR22C but have other recommendations and options over at studiolivetoday.com/gear
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you so much for the enlightenment. You rock👍🏾!!!

Pete Johns oh I understand, yeah he told me I can use it no royalty just credit , I’ll upload the beat and look for a content ID matchb
Cool. Yeah, you should be fine. Good luck!
How i add more instrument and loops live
Hey there. This video will show you how to quickly start layering up looks and instruments.
I have the garage band version 10.3.5 is that an old version
That’s a version for Mac.
Pete Johns Yes
Pete wot ipad will GarageBand work on an wot ones it won’t ? Also how much gb do you need ?
Pete Johns thanks Pete is not for me I already got iPad Air 2 64gb witch you told me to get a couple years ago it’s for my brother whoes just getting into GarageBand now , I’ve showed him you’re site an told him to Follow all you’re videos an he won’t go far wrong wot ever he wants to do on GarageBand there’s definitely a video by you that covers it , top man thanks agen Pete 👍

Pete Johns I haven’t connected headphones maybe that’s the problem ?
Yep. If your iPhone/iPad has a headphone jack try connecting to that. Otherwise you might need to consider a device like this.
ua-cam.com/video/MEpidfMLUqI/v-deo.html
Pete if someone is selling a iPad Air 2 but it has a iCloud lock on it can I still be used for GarageBand an if so wot are the downfalls with it ?
I’ve actually never heard of an “iCloud lock” before sorry? Not sure what that means? Any iPad should be able to be reset to factory settings unless it is locked to a particular cellular carrier, and that’s only the ones with cellular data.
Pete Johns o ok mate , I’ve heard it before on a few people on eBay selling iPads
Yeah right? Not heard of it before?
Can you please make im in love its a beautiful day?
Hey there. Ot familiar with it sorry?
I feel like I have trouble coming up with different parts of a song or timing and all that
Keep working on it my friend. 👍
So do you like make music
Can you step record on garage band
Sort of. There is the Live Loops mode and also the Beat Sequencer which is a step sequencer - ua-cam.com/video/6hkIZgbBlpo/v-deo.html
Question. Mid song tempo changes. I know its possible on mac. Is it on IOS?
Alas, no. You need to literally create two projects, export them, and then join them together.
Nice one! So because you asked nicely, here’s a sneak peak at the video that will be out in the next day. 👍
