    The last part (where the grand instructor makes a demonstration) is the most ridiculous. You really don't need to lie and corrupt the art. Daito Ryu has real, strong techniques. Such demonstrations have reverse effect on the reputation of the art.

      I totally agree. Demonstration only techniques should be abolished. I dont practice them or teach them. Its misleading and you are correct it ruins our art's reputation.

    I'm not sure what that last section from about 9:00 and on was, but I do Daito-Ryu as well. There are different types/ focuses in each different type. Some use more Jujutsu and others use more Aiki. I've never experienced that kind of Aiki technique before so I can't say one way or another whether it works or not. Some do but I don't know about those.

    Some high level techniques near the end. Tight up your opponents so they can't move and step away.

    Those of you who don't understand what you have seen please keep an open mind. To understand this aiki you must feel it. Very high level balance breaking is shown, of course when younger you show all the hard stuff. The humiliating pins are some of the Diato ryu O'Sensei got rid of in his Aikido, he felt how can we reconcile with uke if we humiliate him at the end of technique.

      +Anthony Fitts What is your knowledge of Daito ryu and how Aikido differs from it to be making such a statement?
      Evidence suggests that O Sensei performed the same pins at the end of his life as those he did earlier on.

      I've been thrown by Kondo Shihan , I've been thrown by Kawabe Shihan, the strangest most marvelous technique I've ever felt was at the hands of Inoue (former Kancho of Yoshinkan). I speak from 45 years of putting on a gi and trying to make sense of these wonderful arts we study. O'Sensei abandoned the pins Kawbe Shihan delivers here. In fact I have never seen them completed in any Aikido dojo or demo since my training began in 1979. The high level balance breaking that is demonstrated at the very end of the demo, that others here scoffed at here, should be felt to know how affective it is. Maybe I was misunderstood or my words were poorly written, I humble apologize if that were the case.

      +Anthony Fitts I am asking this because attentive study of the Daito ryu curriculum tends to reconcile, rather than oppose what some call pre- and post- war techniques of O Sensei, and focusing on pins, which is really one of the most superficial aspect, seemed to me like missing that point.
      Re-reading your comment, I now realize the importance of your use of the word "some", and perhaps we agree more than I initially anticipated. I should have read more attentively.
      I must admit, I too tend to switch off when my teachers spend too much time on making human pretzels.
      Out of curiosity, did you study formally Daito ryu from sankajo onwards? This was to me the point where daito ryu started to get a lot closer to what i considered aikido to be. Just wondering if it's the same in every school.
      Thanks for your interest

    from 9:00 is a joke right?

      Not really. The grip is really painfull to hold on. Don't label anything as a joke if you don't understand.

      Good for you. This is Aikijujutsu and not Aikido. There's a difference. I've trained both, but Aikijujutsu was more interesting for me. So I still train in Aikijujutsu.

      @Aria132 10 років тому +5

      Morisu Oranda I didnt say anything bad about aikijujutsu. But it is supposed to be more realistic than aikido. And what i saw at the end of this demonstration were really bad. I prefered the way Kondo sensei did in his videos.

      Aria132 I do not train in the Takumakai branch of Daito Ryu, but I do train in the Ginjukai. I have also been exposed to a number of other internal martial artists. Daito Ryu is an Internal art. What the Sensei is doing at 9:00 onward is a demonstration of Aiki. I agree with you it is a little staged and the Ukes are using over zealous Ukemi, but many of those simple "flick throws",done correctly, work on very uncuoperative Ukes. The thing is that the movements are internal and an untrained eye cannot see what he is doing. Go out and train with different Daito Ryu and Internal Chinese martial artists, you will no doubt encounter some very interesting things. Ikeda sensei of the ASU has some internal stuff going on. He may be able to show you the basic principles in a more "Aikido" flavor. Good luck.

    How much of Aikido is Aiki-jujutsu. I mean, in percentage?

    • @ebor8402
      @ebor8402 10 років тому

      Thats difficult to say, it depends on what style of Aikido, Yonshinkan Aikido and Iwama Aikido are much closer than, say KI Aikido, But most Aikido techniques have there origins in Aiki jitsu. Its more the application that differs.

    Guillaume, to answer your question, no I never reach that level. Daito ryu instruction was few and far between. When it was offered to me at my Yoshinkan dojo the immediate worth of the techniques we're incredible valuable. Unfortunately that dojo closed. During the short time we studied, my teacher flew Kawabe Shihan in for unofficial visits. Just now years later I've been exposed to an I incredible teacher who is one state away from where I live. My training continued in Aikido through multiple dojo closings, hence Aikikai, Yoshinkan, and back to Aikikai. My statement on pinning I will attribute to first the writings then the friendship with Stanley Pranin Sensei.(May he rest in Paradise). Conversations with him lead to my understanding of O'Sensei's thinking.
    Please understand your life your leading is one many of us would love to have had. I followed your growing interest in Daito ryu with tremdous excitiment knowing you document visually your journey. We who have had limited exposure welcome all the information that comes to light that further enhances our understanding of the Aiki arts.
    My journey has been sprinkled with meetings of some of the greatest teachers on the planet. I still have hope of deeper learning, although my body has let me down as of late. We soldier on. Good training to you, great ukemi to keep you safe, and continued learning. Osu!

    This is what gives martial arts a bad image!!!!!! Learn the basic fighting concepts and make them your reactionary principles. A punch from an ordinary man is just a strike, but a punch from someone who spent the last 20 years perfecting the technique of a punch is different entirely. Hard work over time. That is real KUNG FU

    The old guy demonstrates principle of thinking down and become an anchor...
    Its not a combat tech.
    Aikido is the practice of principles...
    Aikiki Ju Jitsu is the combat application...
