If the anime is your first indtroduction, then I advice to read the light novel. I'm not saying to be a smartass, but there were some characters and scenes that were left out in the show. Plus the light novel series already has 12 books (twelvth will come in april) translated from 15.
I think this is a good use of cgi. it's used for faraway shots of something that's hard to animate. but yeah it does stand out a bit too much, the cgi itself could definitely be a bit better.
