As far as I’m concerned, the only way to pick up a new car is grabbing a one way ticket, flying halfway across the country and driving home. Kudos, my man! Ever since my wife got a 987, I’ve been pining over 986’s. I’m looking forward to what’s in store for this one!

Hey Justin!! I hope all is well with you. Haha glad we’re on the same page about how to pick up a car. 986’s are definitely underrated and worth owning. I can’t wait to have this thing refreshed and ready to rip

    I've had a 981 and now a 982 and absolutely love Boxsters. It's a very luxurious, reliable go-cart with 2 trunks.

Congrats on the successful return trip! So glad that the car has a nice new home. Sorry for the additional aspects to the adventure and not realizing how bald those rears were, but that's all part of the fun, right?

Thanks duuudeee! Absolutely, it's all part of the adventure and I wouldn't change a thing about it! Car did wonderfully considering it was just woken up from a 1.5 year nap and shoved on the road at 80+mph for 36hrs straight haha.

🤔given what you know about these engines I’m surprised you didn’t go ahead and replace the coil packs and plugs when doing the fluid change and inspection. I would’ve checked that spare tire too, I’m sure it’s probably the original and unlikely to hold air. Happy you got through it and look forward to future content. 👍🏻

Yeaaa, in retrospect I should have brought a spare coil or two with me… woops, oh well, I had fun haha. Spare looks great though; it’s original, but holds air like a champ. Thank you for watching!

Outstanding trip and video, David! I was wondering if a guy could have RTV'd that crack in the coil or even just some black tape to seal it up. Wouldn't be a perfect fix but may have bought you some time. I'd have had the dealer change them ALL out but that's just me. You were guessing it was just #6...didn't the Foxwell scanner tell you which cylinders were missing? I have a Porsche and a VW and my dealer here in Fort Collins almost always has to order parts in. It must be their business model I think! Glad you made it home and had a great time!!! -Tom.

    • @FunAhead_TV_Official

Thank you, Tom!! I probably should have done RTV'd it to avoid issues with water intrusion, but I didn't know I was about to drive into rain when I was at the Autozone, so I didn't even think about it. Unfortunately, it was already too far gone to begin performing any better, but it would have been nice to do in the event of rain. Fortunately, the rain didn't have an impact!!
My code reader told me it was cylinder 6 that was misfiring; otherwise, I'd have had no idea which of the 6 was acting up. The dealership wanted $110 per coil, and they're about 30% that cost on FCP Euro. So I put my eyes on the others, saw they weren't cracked, and made an educated-ish guess they wouldn't crack on the remainder of the journey if they hadn't already done so in the first several hundred miles after waking them up from their 1.5 year slumber. Now the rest can be replaced much more economically! Thanks for watching, as always, Tom!

@@FunAhead_TV_Official I hear ya...the dealer prices are ridiculous. I get a lot from FCP Euro, but Rock Auto also is a terrific source for our parts!

Im here, I watched! Very cool stuff bro. You are an inspo. I just got a 996 and I am over the moon. I am scheming on getting clutch and flywheel, timing chains and pads, RMS, IMS, and my trans fixed up (bad howl in 5th and 6th). guards red 2001 996 c2 w/ 140k daily driven by mechanical engineer. I am so in love. I am referncing ur vids of doing the chains, so thank you for doing what you do! My dad is now about to buy a white 986 bc hes a vert guy (mine is hard top) and I am so happy for him. His will be a 1999 white boxster with the 2.5. He'll love that 30mpg, thats for sure :D. Dad is 68 and just retired. Im 25 so not enough $$$ to buy him a 911 like I dreamed, but him having a 986 and me having a 996 and us living in the same town and still being best friends is a dream come true. This is a first for both of us, having a porsche(s) that is!
    Keep it up!

Thank you so much for watching, and congratulations on your new 996! Good luck with the upcoming projects on the car. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions along the way; email is in my vid descriptions. For your trans, very common that they start to do that, but before digging super far into it, replacing the fluid to see if that improves the situation. Sometimes old fluid can contribute to the howl.
Very exciting that your dad is looking to pick up a 986; that'll be a ton of fun to go on drives together.

@@FunAhead_TV_Official No problem sir! I am already looking for the next vid :D, but yea, I actually took that cam deviation and found I am off to -11 on bank 1 and -5 bank two... OOof! So yea, rebuild incoming... Turns out that Hartec (the cheaper british version of FSI) created a single USA branch and its located less than 100 miles away!!! I was going to tackle this job but honestly, I think it'd be best to have the experts do it as as much as I want to DIY, I got a bit too much work and stuff going on and just need it done right WITH a warranty! haha
I am mostly tripping about what to do with my tranmission. Trans removal is not hard, but its a b*tch and 1/2 (I hate the spline alignment part so much). Other than that, not bad. I think you are right about that sound. Turns out that 95% of "trans howl at speed" cases are the R&P (the pinion gear's sealed bearing).
Also, Hartech does NOT believe in the IMS solution (oil feed) as it steals its oil and pressure from a crank bearing!... Naw, they put the big IMS in it. If I were to DIY the rebuild, Id put the new alusil cyl's, big bore the heads, new pistons, same bottom end, new lifters, chains, ims (retrofit) and run it... I need that rebuild tho.
The PO found green bits in the oil filter. They then went away, engine runs good 20k miles later, but the deviation is off in bank 1 prob due to the vario cam solenoid seals (green seals). I discovered a cool thing, before hartech created a "revbuild kit" for the variocam acts. (as I am sure you know) they cost and arm AND a leg lol. Now, 50 dollar seals and BAM...
So yea, I just learned that Hartec has full services in USA now! Spreading the word. They, unlike their UK counterparts, offer a FULL 2 YEAR, UNLIMITED MILEAGE, AND TRACK USE ON ALL ENGINES for 22k.... Thats good. 24k gives you a big bore... Serious SERIOUS good work going on there.... It is called "SLAKKER RACING in OKC OKLAHOMA". I am giving them a call ASAP and ill prob make a vid series if I go thru with it... Peace
Sry for info dump, these cars make me excited! If it goes well, I think my dad's going to get this boxster (clean with oil leaks, but the guy selling is trying to fix them in order to get 10k sale price (seems he bought the car for 5ish). Pulls left, oil leaks, prob RMS, no ISM, but other than that perfect example.
OK, typing a book now here so I will stop. Peace! I will be sure to HMU along my way my good sir. Seeing as if I do go with Hartech's engine, they have 2 year, unlimited mileage, I plan on taking some serious roadtrips in this bad boy... I might have to head north and say whats up! Especially if I start making videos like you. We could call it a collab lol!
