Excellent video, David! I'm in almost the same place as Eric with 105k on my 997. It runs great with no issues at all and doesn't use oil, however some day I would love to drop the engine just to refresh all of the stuff that deteriorates, wears out, and is just too hard to get to with the engine in the car. I feel like I could do a better job with the engine out. I wish I could find a guy like you here in Colorado who could help me get the engine out so that I could then help with all of the other stuff. I don't think an Indy Porsche shop would want to let the customer anywhere near the car in their shop. Bummer for me! Thanks, -Tom.
I hope you find a guy like David. The dealerships are a rip and they don’t look out for the customer. I just feel so lucky I live close. Maybe you could drive over here, drop it off, fly back and forth and drive back to CO? The plane tix would pay for themselves after the Labor that David puts in compared to any Indy or Dealer. All the best
@@MrPrint-lo8bt The thought HAS crossed my mind! Thing is, I'd like to help with the work, and I don't see a way to make that happen. I could buy all the parts, but if we had to order something in, that could mean waiting for days. I think the hotel bill would kill me!🤔🤔
I get it. But maybe you can drop it off and fly back for a couple weeks. David is great with the parts situation. I supplied many parts I didn’t get to install myself and he just charged labor. I think you guys can work something out. And what a road trip adventure! It still beats any estimate we got from a dealer /indy. And he is a legit Engineer well vetted.
Hey, sorry I'm late to the convo!! Tom, I was actually going to suggest exactly what Erik said... the roadtrip / flight situation, if you wanted to someday do that. You could always drive out, we get started right away and drop the engine and you could be there for the exciting stuff. Then I could knock out the laborious stuff that takes a long time that I don't always show on camera, then fly back to help with final engine assembly, re-install, and.. of course, first start / drive. Just saying, I'm open to it!
I really appreciate your detailed explanation with the engine disassembled. You do it in a way that a novice person can understand. I believe the chain tensioner guides are also in need of replacement on my 911. In your opinion, what would cause a check engine light to trigger for that specific issue?
Thanks Kurt! I appreciate the kind words as always. So since one of the guides generally wears more than the other, it could cause the intake cam to be out of phase with the exhaust cam. This would trigger a cam position out of range CEL, or something along those lines.. basically cam deviation out of range. If your VarioCam solenoids themselves aren't operating correctly then it'd cause a commanded vs actual cam position related check engine light... or target cam position not met... or something like that. Not sure exactly what the specific code numbers are.
I'm SOOO relieved!! Thank you so much. I can give you the name of shop that did the Clutch and IMS. It was 3 years ago in Texas before I took possession. They are the a..holes responsible for the Loctite. Now I have to wait until summer to drive it. 😞
You're welcome! Nahh, it's all good, I don't want to shed any sort of negative light on anybody in particular. Honestly, they did great work! They just weren't exactly thinking of the next guy that would take the stuff apart haha. That's my only gripe.
I am almost here with mine but I have yet to get a clutch and flywheel ordered. I did get the LN Engineering low temp thermostat and it is making me very angry. I can not figure out how one installs it. Then time I have gotten it compressed as much as I could, nope still not low enough. Any tips.
@@FunAhead_TV_Official I tried using a deep socket. I bottoms out about 1/8th of an inch and no more compression. Looking at the old one, it is about 1/8th of an inch shorter than the new one. The thing cost like $94.00 on Pelican. I think I am going to call them Monday and try to get it sorted. I had went on a blitzkrieg of purchasing parts some months ago thinking I would need them. A few (my fault) were incorrect and due to setbacks in my project had sat and then fell outside the return window. Glad I may catch this one. I have also given up on the wheels. They are Porsche but not stock. 18X10 with 285 tires. They are massive. They do look pretty manly from the back view but they have been troublesome with the new suspension and I suspect they always will be. Any suggestions? For a wheel and tire set I am really wanting to spend about 3k.
I really enjoy my weekly lunch and learn.

Also, Erik, thank you so much for the kind words! You're the bomb!

You mean into the housing? They’re definitely tricky to install. There’s a tool, but I usually get by with a vice and an oversized, deep socket
