American Wasteland was my childhood. I used to play it every year on Christmas Eve and try to stay up and beat it before my parents woke up for presents. Definitely has its flaws but it just hooked me and the soundtrack is still in my rotation
For real TH:AW was goated, got it for Christmas the year it released. Had all the quality of life improvements of thug 1 and 2, and a better story than thug 2. I think I prefer thug 1, but american wasteland is so good.
American Wasteland is still one of my all time favs. I got into the series out of order, so I played THPS4 first in like 2004. Then got American Wasteland in 2005. (Got and played the previous games later on and enjoyed them). The whole story and aesthetic for AW was just incredible to my 10 year old self. Since I hadn't played Underground yet, all the gameplay additions were actually interesting and new to me. Story was hilarious, but endearing, and the soundtrack... MY GOD, the soundtrack. The fact that the majority were all covers of older songs by some of the most popular 2000s punk bands, and I never even knew it. Seriously, I thought all of them were original songs by those bands. Absolutely phenomenal stuff.
i played thug 2 at 3 years old. played the others here and there over the years but never finished them. just messed around. just played thug1 the other day and its easily better than 2 (story wise. at least). im downloading AW. cant wait. might update when im done with the story.
I've been working my way through the THPS1+2 remake and as someone who is a huge fan of the first four THPS games, and played all of them on release, they've done a great job. The controls are perfectly ported, it looks great, the majority of the soundtrack is intact, and it looks like how I remember the first 2 games looking through my nostalgia goggles, which is the sweetspot for remasters. They've even added new skaters and videos in a pretty unobtrusive way. They' e also added a whole bucketload of optional challenges, which is a fantastic touch, and shows a good understanding of the games audience.
i just loaded up underground 2 for the first time in well over ten years and got lost getting 100% in the first 2 levels. I didn't know how much i missed good clean fun games with no mtx and such
For a public, mass marketed product the level of quality in the rap portion of the soundtrack is unbelievable. Quas, public enemy, mr complex, nas, naughty by nature, anacron, qbert, busdriver, mr. Lif, aceyalone, etc. Pretty immaculate curation that showed a different side of rap music before the internet was really developed, when the mainstream was departing from the underground, and it wasnt as easy to access the styles presented in these OSTs.
Honestly every Tony Hawk game has a few decent tracks at least in HATED games like Ride and Shred and such the soundtracks are at least among the more redeeming qualities about them
The musical intros going into the chapters for THPS1 and Project 8 reminded me of Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups and hit me with a wave of nostalgia I didn't know I needed.
Havent finished the vid yet (released 8 minutes ago), but good job so far brahhh. Also, I liked your interview vids, you put a lot of work into them in terms of time (filming, research, editing etc) and money (travel, accommodation), so very much appreciated.
Can you please put these into audio format like a podcast?! I spent my whole shift last night at work listening through the metal gear series. Thanks for making these!
What I love about Pro Skater 1+2 is that not only was it a “remaster”, all the pro skaters in game were their current age in IRL at the time of release, rather than them just remastering the character designs. Small detail that I genuinely appreciate
I remember always creating the same character in Underground. A guy with a backpack and a neon green skull for a head. Dunno why, it's not even that I thought it was hilarious, that was legitimately just the coolest looking character I could come up with.
Tony Hawks American Wasteland was like a true vibe of skating especially ea skate 1 and 2 were just gold but tony hawks american wasteland was sick with unique tricks u can do that were just special about the game and the fact u could ride bmx was dope too😂, it was a true vibe giving us the prediction of the last tony hawk game will be THAW with little cartoon goofy but respectfully has just good graphics and textures thats when things started to feel depressing but more vibes playing alone when multiplayer died ;)❤ other than that THUG and THUG 2 was a true tony hawk street games too but many of them were good memory loving the fact it was about street og skating in tony hawk series 🔥
First stage Warehouse in first Tony Hawk back in 1998, i did 937k points with 367k single combo (record in my country at the time). Dont say there was no chance of "connecting" combos in first Tony. Maps were designed to find out and perform specific combos.
Project 8 and THPV were and still are my favorite tony hawk games.. really based of nostalgia.. but i can respect the opinion of both especially going back to them in a year like 2024 based off of the modern skate games now (Skate, Session, XL, etc.) With all being said, those games were their own identity as games. I've heard this a lot about those games but you have to understand why they made them like that and being they never had a core storyline, strictly focusing on the main characters journey in a serious manner. I just had to give my 2 cents. Love this content! Ps. i'm not a wasteland fan, just couldn't like it enough to play through it. So i understand his opinion
Cool retrospective. I would have liked to see more of the other features in the games like the multiplayer/online and stage builder and trick maker, though i know those are more secondary content.
3 was probably my favorite back in the day, just cause it had so much to do and so many skaters and tricks. And HORSE was the best multiplayer mode IMHO, so many fun evenings with friends with that one.
I'm definitely a diehard fan of Underground 1 and American Wasteland, they're both really solid (if slightly janky) entries, although I have been going back and playing the PS1 Pro Skaters and I'm also having a lot of fun with them. After being spoiled for choice, the limited movesets in the earlier games force me to think and be more creative with how I approach the goals. On a random note, I was about 12 when American Wasteland came out and I remember so many advertisements toting 'no loading screens' as the next big thing for the game and, technically, they were correct but I love how they just slapped these liminal hallways in between each level. There was something weird about leaving Hollywood and going through a closed down and abandoned strip mall to get to Beverly Hills or going through the parking lot from Beverly Hills to Santa Monica. It was psuedo open world and looking back on it now I can appreciate the creativity the team had when dealing with the technical shortcoming of their engine. You can pinpoint when the previous level deloads and the next one loads because the icons in the compass just explode into different spots lmao
You listed American Wasteland as the beginning of the end, but really it was THUG2. If the player didn't enjoy Johnny Knoxville-style content, then the game was SUPER alienating.
Never thought of it that way and it seems very true. But for me as CKY and Jackass fanboy I can only say that I never had more fun playing a video game to this day
THAW is easier to appreciate for a niche audience which is west coast punks. I consider it a kid friendly love letter to the DIY scene in LA. A perfect wrap up for what i consider the attitude era (borrowing the term from wrestling) of American skateboarding
As a 90s, kid who started skating when he was 6 and literally did an hour ago at work... I'm proud of you son. BlackLabel never be bought, never be sold. Mullen is god End of story
The best feeling I had was getting over 1000000 points on THPS 1's Warehouse stage. Finding a way on my own to get an almost unlimited combo back in the day was amazing. Been trying to recreate that combo, but it's so hard over 20 years later 🤣
Downhill Jam was really wearing its SSX3 influence on its sleeve lol, down to the boost meter based off doing tricks, being able to punch other racers, even the focus on speed and overall track design
PS1-4, UG1&2, American Wasteland, and Project 8 were all pretty dope experiences. Project 8 was my personal fave growing up, no real...specific reason, i just like it a lot.
One thing that I think gets glossed over in THUG2 is how the graphics and physics changed in tandem to reflect the mood of the game. The characters look more arcadey instad of trying to have any degree of realism (which I think THUG touched on to make the story somewhat relateable). Similarly, you can get a manual that manifests motorized wheels on the back of your skateboard to get a crazy amount of speed which you can use while skating around an alien station that can teleport you to an aztec temple and literal hell. It's an insanely silly game, and I love it. It's flawed, but so much fun. Sticking with this style in THAW was the right move.....and then they lost focus and never got it back.
What a great video this is why you are my Favorite Son. I have a lot of love for the Tony hawk franchise. Pro skater 1 to 4 and thug underground are amazing games
THUG1 & 2, American Wasteland and Project 8 feel super nostalgic to me and the games that i felt had the most meaning to me out of all the series. I was definitely the right audience for those 4 games and when Proving Ground came out, I played it but at that point it was all about the Skate series to me and a game that was a bit more realistic as opposed to arcade style. Shoutout to Downhill Jam tho, playing that with my friends was fun.
15:45 notice the guy behind the counter of the skate shop getting force choked when darth maul is displayed or going into a fighting stance when wolverine is.. its the little things.
As I was watching the video I just kept saying "that one's my favourite!" with each game 🥲 I played all the Tony Hawk games on PC (with a keyboard!) back in the day so it ended for me on American Wasteland. TPHS 1+2 was such a great remake and it makes me so sad that we won't get a 3+4. I replayed all the games in 2020 and damn, I might have to do it again!
American wasteland was the first video game I got when it was brand new. I beat the story on every difficulty so many times. It is my favorite game still today.
Hey shout out to a fellow Underground 2 lover :) I remember playing online in that game and seeing some absolute beasts tear up the maps and shred some unbelievable combos racking up points in the millions - total titans of skateboarding, wonder who they are and where they are now Such a crying shame about the canned THPS3 remake, THPS 1 and 2 imo are not as interesting, while 3 is where some of my most favorite maps are, so I'd loooove for it to be brought into the modern era. Still hope they revive it someday.
I played a few of these games when I was a young adult (18-20ish) and I was such a drunk back then, even watching these detailed overviews hasnt helped me pinpoint them😂 Fun video though, gave me some bittersweet nostalgia too
I enjoyed my time with P8 and PG, especially with the Nail-the-Trick mechanic. I'd always slip in a few NtT's in a line as doing a kickflip there gives higher pts than a normal kickflip. Also I don't remember getting performance issues when I played both games on the PS2. Besides that, I still love the THUG games and THPS2 the most. The former for being the most fun games in the series, while the latter being the game that got me into the franchise back when I was 5 years old.
Project 8 was designed for 360, that's the version you should have played, none of the issues you mentioned applied to that version. The PS3 version was a rushed port, it only used 1 core and wasn't optimised for the PS3's memory architecture either so the graphics were downgraded to compensate. Also, you forgot to mention the best feature of the game, you can ragdoll on command by pressing all the shoulder buttons at once.
Yeah although I roll my eyes when I see purist say that the PS1 versions of Pro Skater 3 and 4 are the "true" versions when they weren't even the main versions developed by Neversoft like Shaba Games and Vicarious Visions literally just used the PS2, GC and Xbox versions as a base line to start and then downgrade them for the PS1 system
@@poleon2003Quite ironic, since THPS3 started development as a PS one game, but midway through development, the platform was changed to the PlayStation 2, causing Shaba games to continue working on the PS one port. What we got isn't bad to be honest. It may not have Cruise Ship and most of the bonus skaters and levels, but we were given a solid, quality port given the PlayStation's limitations, plus a Downhill level that would reappear in Project 8. It just shows that not all scaled-back ports are bad.
@@NewGabeOrder Yeah not to say that the PS1 versions were bad I was just pointing out that when people fondly remember Pro Skater 3 they usually talk about the PS2 version as that was the highest scoring version of Pro Skater 3 according to metacritic despite the PS1 version being remembered by those who just couldn't buy a PS2 when it was brand new just to play the new next gen Tony Hawk game and just stuck with PS1 for the time being
@@poleon2003 ...but what about the GameCube version? The game performs better on a GameCube, and it is one of the platform's launch titles. I not only have the N64 and Xbox versions, but I have a copy of the GameCube version of THPS3.
@@NewGabeOrder well yeah I was just referring to the 6th gen console versions as a whole as all 3 consoles were worked on by Neversoft but I find the Tony Hawk games and SSX games to an extent to feel much better to play with a PS2 controller to me personally although Xbox has the best graphics and performance and has a exclusive level and skater that the PS2 and GC versions didn't have but still
The games I actually played were THPS3, Sk8land (the Gameboy version of Wasteland iirc), and Proving Grounds. A friend got me 1+2 for my birthday and it's alright, but I've definitely lost my skateboarding cred after 15+ years of not playing anything.
Still hoping for a thug 1, thug 2, and American wasteland remasters. I see them as kind of a trilogy. There fhe only reason i still have my 360 as i like to replay them every couple years.
If you play ride or shred again i recommend strips of velcro (the soft half) on the bottom and using it on a fairly clean hardwood floor with medium high lighting it makes the sensors work a little better in my personal experience. And ask it really nicely to work extra good
Основная проблема была в том, что они выпускали игры каждый год, в надежде сорвать банк. Делали бы между ними паузы, может и идеи/реализация были бы лучше.
Ohe thing that is very much worth mentioning with regards to the humor of the series is this. Tony Hawk (IRL) is a good friend of the original creators of Jackass. So them having that humor in the games makes a lot of sense
It might be cool to take another look later at some of the last-gen and portable versions of the games; there are a handful of them that are really interesting or technological marvels. Tony Hawk 1 for Game boy color was a sidescroller, and it was the inspiration for the Grimace GBC game released by mcdonalds last year; THPS2 for GBA was hilariously faithful despite the view change. THPS3 for N64 was the last game released for the console and does some really cool stuff with music stems to save on storage space. THPS4 for PS1 still manages to stay open-world even though it's still using Tony Hawk 2 as a base and it's really impressive! And then THUG2 for PSP actually managed to include more content than the PS2 game.
Whats your favorite Tony Hawk Game? 🛹
Tony Hawk 4, it's the first game in my life that I ever 100%'d. That soundtrack.... 😍😍😍

THUG 2
Tony hawk 3 and THUG1&2

the biggest and saddest omission of the remake is the inability to play as spiderman.

And now THUGPRO is probably the greatest collection of some of the best games in the series in one on PC.
ReThawed is better, check it out
The fact that Downhill Jam doesn't have a manual function is absolutely mindboggling.
I spent hours playing low gravity tag mode on THPS 3. Thanks for the good memories son.
Ill always hold a special place in my heart for proving grounds for ps3, the skate check gave me so many laughs as a kid
American wasteland was the first video game I got when it was brand new. I beat the story on every difficulty so many times. It is my favorite game still today.
Great video, Son! Dad is very proud!
Hey shout out to a fellow Underground 2 lover :) I remember playing online in that game and seeing some absolute beasts tear up the maps and shred some unbelievable combos racking up points in the millions - total titans of skateboarding, wonder who they are and where they are now
Such a crying shame about the canned THPS3 remake, THPS 1 and 2 imo are not as interesting, while 3 is where some of my most favorite maps are, so I'd loooove for it to be brought into the modern era.
40 hours for TPS1+2 is crazy. You can beat the whole thing in 10 or less easily
@@NewGabeOrder well yeah I was just referring to the 6th gen console versions as a whole as all 3 consoles were worked on by Neversoft but I find the Tony Hawk games and SSX games to an extent to feel much better to play with a PS2 controller to me personally although Xbox has the best graphics and performance and has a exclusive level and skater that the PS2 and GC versions didn't have but still
Downhill Jam looks like a snowboarding game. I have never played a Tony Hawk game.
american wasteland will forever be my all time favorite tony hawk game.
I spent half my childhood in the world destruction tour and american wasteland. Time well spent.
And ask it really nicely to work extra good
I loved American wasteland tbh
Основная проблема была в том, что они выпускали игры каждый год, в надежде сорвать банк. Делали бы между ними паузы, может и идеи/реализация были бы лучше.
in my day we played the tony hawk in the snow uphill both ways!!
lolz
I love seeing everyone appreciate American wasteland. Definitely the one i played the most
Ohe thing that is very much worth mentioning with regards to the humor of the series is this.
Dude I loved American wasteland and Undergound 2 growing up
