"SWEET PACIFIC" George Pal Puppetoon

- This is a very rare 35mm print of a George Pal Puppetoon that was produced for Mounds Candy Bars. This short was shown in movie theatres probably the late 1940's. I can't find any more information on this film. If anybody knows more, please post it.

It is nice to see these George Pal videos. Here's to hoping that the entire series can be fully restored, someday, and seen by whoever wants to enjoy. If any of you bought the blu-ray edition of "THE PUPPETOONS MOVIE", you know exactly what I'm raving over!
Whoever is supplying the voice of the King has one hell of a baritone.

It's definitely Pal. The heads change shape when speaking - because they are all different heads for each mouth sound. Everyone else used dolls or other malleable figurine. Pal carved each figure out of wood - so the end effect was somewhat surreal since the movement was fluid but not like Gumby.
This is an advertising piece. Not all ads made for theatres were shot in color. I understand this was one of the last films made before the Pal studio closed. I assure this was digitally mastered from a 35mm film print. Which I believe was a fine grain preservation print. Certainly NOT a digital camera.
This was referenced in the Ray Harryhausen documentary. Only a single frame was shown but they mentioned Ray worked with this person in his early career.
I'm sure that was Thurl Ravenscroft. That was his heyday.
That was so wonderful.
Although most people wouldn't know it today, for a long time there were no snack bars in movie theaters, which sold no food. These did not come into existence till after World War II, as a way for theaters to make more money. That's why there were ads like this one, as well as the more familiar ones like "Let's All Go To The Lobby" to encourage customers to go out and buy food.
I got here following an old time radio Jack Benny program, ""Murder at the Racquet Club" recorded March 9, 1941 in Palm Springs. The gag is Jack lost his neighbor Ronald Colman's Oscar lent to him and Jack begs George Pal to give Jack his Oscar (he'd won in real life for animation innovation) to "return an Oscar" to Colman. George says no way. The racquet club was where Sinatra, who was in this episode, and other big stars hung out, including George Pal.

I remember that he (my father) made Mounds commercials and the song is familair as well as the characters. I dont know if this is a fake, because it was a long time ago but what I can see seems somewhat like what it was like. Could you explain why anyone would take the trouble to reproduce it?

I know I’m 10 years late, but it’s because it’s a piece of animation history. Your dad was one of the pioneers for making animation (especially stop motion) what it is today. His name is in one of my university textbooks. You should be proud.
I wonder if they had The Smurfs commercials from the 1970s using the same "Sweet Pacific" song one in orchestral in 1974, and the acapella in 1973.

I believe that it is these type commercials that offer a little bit of humor that are the most effective. Another example are some of the Geico ones.

Thank you for your comments, David. It is mastered from 35mm. I have the print(s) to prove it. In fact I have 5 of them. They are all mint condition. Unfortunately they also have vinegar syndrome. :(

I can categorically back up the comment posted by Davis Pal that this was made by George Pal. Models from this advert were donated to the Smithsonian Museum by Mrs Pal in 1983. I am working on the history of George Pal's puppet films, so this was of great interest to me. I also had my doubts to its origin, but whether or not it was made at the old Puppetoon Studio is still to be answered, as that closed in 1948, which would make this advert late 40s not 50s. Anyone with more information I would love to hear it.
+Mike Hankin I still have the 35mm prints, there are 5 of them all spliced together. I will have to see if I can find them and look up the edge codes. This much I can tell you is they all have vinegar syndrome. So they are quite old. I will be shipping them to the LOC when I ship my latest batch of film.
+Tim Romano Thank you for the information. Are there 5 prints of the same film, or are there others in the series of films? Excuse my ignorance (this may be a term we are not used to in England), but what does LOC stand for?

I understand that this was one of the last turned out by the Pal studio. My guess is that George Pal himself had little to do with this. It is authentic in the fact that I own the original 35mm print. Which has vinegar syndrome. I believe this was a fine grain preservation print.

Was this originally shot in black & white or was it shot in color and the print was in Black & White? It looks like the latter to me, but I dunno.
It is believed to have been shot in B&W originally. On of the last shot before the Pal studio shut down.
@@vitaphonedisc The lighting made me think it was done in black and white, with the somewhat brighter image, but I didn't know for sure.

around the begining of this film you can hear one mans voice singing but the other two are mouthing the song
