Katerina, I have about 5 coleus I transplanted from the ground into a Dollar Store container. They have done really well. I would love to over winter these, in unheated garage but they are rather tall. Would anyone know if it would work to cut them back so they can fit on a garage shelf? Wondering if cutting back by half would stress it too much? Or would that make it stronger?🤔 I'm in zone 7a (Tulsa)

They photosynthesize through water, compost soil, and sunlight whether it be direct, filtered/dappled, or indirect (shade outdoors, and through a window indoors), and that gives them energy to grow. Cutting them back a little is like giving them a nap and, like people, when they wake up they use the energy they stored up to be productive. There's also pruning to dormancy as we do with hardy perennials when we cut them down at the end of their blooming season. They're suuuper tired, and like bears they go into hibernation. They wake back up as it starts to warm up and the sun gives them energy, so all of that said there are two ways to cut back your coleus: trim all of it down a bit and give it just enough warmth and water to keep it alive while letting it sleep, or trim small parts here and there to give it a nap. If you choose the latter, it'll grow back either very tall or very bushy, and that depends on where you cut. The plant will wake from the nap and focus its energy on regenerating where the cut was made, and it'll grow back much bigger in that area. I know it's kinda silly to personify a plant, but that's how I learned it working at nurseries and garden centers. Hope that helps!
I had coleus planted last year Houston Texas we had a freeze for three days and they all died but they came back one long stem how can I propagate to get more for next year
Thing is, there's like 1600+ registered cultivars of coleus, and new ones every year as they crossbreed and mutate super easily. So getting a list of all coleus is basically impossible
I do cuttings off mine, and bring them in the house, they stay beautifully all winter in house til spring!
I am going to try that this winter

I bring mine inside my unheated garage in zone 6B and they overwinter in there and in spring they come back!
