Thank you! That's part of why I take everyone along through my thought processes, normalizes things from the misnomer that gardens on social media are just magically put together and pristine. I don't think that creates a very positive narrative for people who are new to it all and they end up stressing over every little thing. That defeats the purpose of gardening in my opinion. Hope you are well and staying safe!
Sooo pretty. Good job on the mag tree... I wish I had a neighbor like you. I probably wouldnt want to move. My neighbors SUCK! Thank you for sharing your backyard.
Things are coming together beautifully, Jeff! Like you, I'm sneaking in an hour or two between rain showers. I'm looking forward to your next vlog! Take care!
Hi Jeff! Everything is coming together so beautifully! I'm glad you chose the light gray pot, it looks much better and the queen palm looks better there, too. I love the Cordylines "Maria" and "Kiwi". The colors are so vibrant and pretty. I love that your using more of them in different areas. Do they attract any pests when they're inside, or outside? I'd love to try growing the two you have. Those 3 pots look so pretty. I'm anxious to see what you add. I agree with you on moving the Cordyline "Maria's" around. I really appreciate that you take us through your thought process. It really helps! So nice seeing Tucker, Toby, Pumpkin and Colby. Toby in the chair was too cute! LOL! We had rain most of last week, too, and now it's supposed to keep getting hotter this week, up to 99° by Friday! Too hot, too soon! What ever happened to gradually going through the season? I still need to buy veggie plants for the raised beds and flowers/plants for my pots. I better get that done before it gets too hot! I figured you'd cut the magnolia down yourself. It's too bad that you can't find someone to remove the two stumps you have. Please take care and don't hurt yourself doing the "heavier" jobs yourself. Again, you made my day! Thank you so much for sharing and keep on growing!
Hey Sandy! Well, the magnolia situation is further resolved, I won't spoil anything, but you'll see in saturdays video. I'm so glad to be done with that headache! The weather this year has just been ridiculous! There really hasn't been anything gradual like you said, just a lot of extremes. Ha! I was just thinking the same about the rest of my veggies, I have to get those planted ASAP before the extreme heat gets here. I am very happy with the new pot and different palm tree. Like I said, you couldn't even really see the adonidia palm there which is a waste of it's beauty and a waste of the space. ... and there's so much more room for planting in the larger pot! Yay! The cordylines do come with a fair level pest risk. Mealybugs, spider mites, soft scale, snails and slugs all love them! I have to spend a lot of time tending to those issues during the winter and a lot of time repelling slugs and snails during the rainy and warm season. I wouldn't necessarily say that they attract slugs, but the constant rain we've had has created an abundance of slugs and snails that are now EVERYWHERE! In years past, just a sprinkling of slug and bug killer does the trick.
I like the pot trio, it looks lush, kinda like it’s really planted in the ground, in the tropics. Great choices Jeff! I’ll miss you if you don’t post mid week, I ALWAYS look forward to your videos. I guess I’ll just have to watch re-runs. Love seeing your zoo, thank you. I got a lot of planting done this week, nothing like yours though, it’s supposed to rain for the next five days, I’m excited, not. But I guess it will help me rest my back that I totally messed up somehow. Keep on growing, stay safe 💚🙃
Well thank you, Judy! I tend to try and make that area look naturalized and not very formal, so having it look like they are in the ground, in the tropics is perfect! I got next weeks, weekday video filmed yesterday in between storms, so there will be a video, no worries🙂. Sounds like we have similar forecast, supposed to rain and storm here for the next 8 to 10 days! Blah! Least it's good for the plants. As far as the garden is concerned, I'd rather have a lot of rain than a drought. ... but just normal weather would be nice also😂🤣
This May has also been very weird with the weather in the UK as we started off very warm in the upper 70s then a cold spell came thanks to the arctic which made day temperatures in the upper 40s low 50s for three days with lows of upper 20s low 30s then a heatwave came with day temperatures rising to the low 80s, I can't keep up with the crazy weather but at least now we are averaging around the mid 70s. It has also been extremely dry and sunny here throughout the UK as my area hasn't had substantial rain since late March so all they soil is dried out with large cracks making it look like a desert, now everything is planted and growing, hope your tropicals grow well this year 🌴
Isn't it ridiculous!? This weather has been so strange. March was decent here, very mild and had a couple of random days in the uppers 80s, then April was cold and dry, may has been cool and sopping wet. .. looks like things are going to get more normal here in a week or so. Finally!
YAY! The Magnolia is "gone"! Clean slate! You can do it Jeff! Did I really see the variegated tropical orange sunpatiens? *JEALOUSY* I agree with you about the Alyssum, not really vibing with the elephant ears and cordylines. I don't care what people say about queen palms. I love them too. Love the big faux concrete gray pot. I think they look fine together. The gray dots on the blue pots kind of tie into the center pot. At least you haven't had 2 hail storms this week. lol
😂🤣 true! But we had them last week, not as big as yours though. Glad you mentioned that again, I have to get the may garden tour filmed before everything gets filled with holes. Surprised we made it this long, usually by late may the bananas, colocasia etc look like Swiss cheese. No, those I only was able to get the tropical rose sunpatiens this year. I do have some AWESOME orange flowered, variegated new guinea impatiens though. I think they look better than any of the variegated sunpatiens... except they are new guineas so not as hardy to sun and cold. I wish someone would make a hot pink lobularia! Would make things so much easier. I agree, I like the pot there, I like it better than the other one. The queen palms are some of my favorites, classic beauties! However, if I lived somewhere like zone 10 or 11 I can think of many other palms I'd be growing before the queens. They are a good option for here though. Tropical appearance and can leave them out WAY longer than any of the smooth trunked palms. I think I'd grow pindo no matter where I lived, they're all short and chubby with fun fronds. I'll try and remember to check the tag on those new guineas tomorrow and let you the name on instagram.
Do you have a sledge mall? Maybe a few whacks on that stump if you have it cut 3/4 the through? Are those cichlids or oscars, or maybe I’m way off base?💚🙃 I think Toby loves that chair because it has your scent on it. Oh thank you so much for getting a mid week video filmed💚💚💚💚💚🙃
I do have one, but I can't swing it with my current shoulder problems. You're pretty much correct, Oscars are a type of Cichlid, and yes, those are oscars. 😁
I kept looking at your Areca Palm thinking that looks awfully like my Golden Cane palms, I googled it and sure enough they are the same palm. I wish our nurseries had the same ferns as the ones you are about to transplant, beautiful lime green. Ours are all deep green.
My fern order arrived today. 30 Sensitive ferns and 10 Lady ferns. Just finished planting all of them. Also digging weeds out of a 60 foot long by 9 foot deep steep bank so I could get those ferns planted. Hollyhocks are thugs. Weeds were not all that bad but those dang HH. I too have been dodging the rain here. Started a little bit just as I was finishing up planting. No camera out there so no problem. Your yard is so Beautiful even not done to the way you want it to be.
@@TropicalPlantParty Actually it is quite boring. Just large hedge of lilacs at the top and a few trees a juniper tree and some junipers on the ground. And a few Bergenia. Sure smelled good while planting though. This is a before and after from when we first got here and 10 years later. My Flickr photos link is safe. The shrubs and the one ragged tree is cleaned up now. I had to take the chain saw to that wild plum tree this spring. The quail like to shelter from hawks and owls in here. www.flickr.com/photos/50185661@N03/42545617631/in/dateposted/
When you looked at the magnolia and just sighed I laughed so hard. Sorry to laugh at your suffering, but the annoyance of just this constant problem is so relatable
Haha! Oh it was meant to to be funny, the tree that just wouldn't go away! Lol! There will be some developments with that, not going to spoil it for you though.
Hey Jeff. Sorry to hear your weather stinks this week. You've done a great job despite it. Your attention to detail is obvious, the results are certainly worth the effort. From a personal perspective it's really interesting to hear how well the Queen palms and the mule palms do in your climate. I think with a bit of help I'd have a chance here in 9a NE uk (coastal). My favourite scene though is the animals bumming around on your sofa resting 😴😴😴. Cheers 👍
Oh yeah, both these palms love heat and we have nice hot summers for them. The mules are half queen, so makes sense they would perform in a similar manner. I think I've seen palms in your garden on instagram, haven't I? Mediterranean fan palms or windmill palms?
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks Jeff. Yes, you're right. I have fortunei, waggys, phoenix Canariensis, Jubeai chilensis, trachy nova, butia capita, chaemerops standard, cerifera and vulcano outside. I can't get enough of 🌴🌴🌴 so always thinking about adding to the collection. We don't get your beautiful summers hete so I'm not sure how the queen and mule would do. Your Vlogs given me the inspiration to try. Cheers mate. Have a great weekend and hope you get some 🌞
I'm always astonished when someone can just place something and walk away. I have to have balance. I'll look at it and move it and look at it and do just what you do. If you don't try all the possibilities how do you know which one is right? Right? You have a great eye for color!
JeffFFFF!! You left us hanging lmaoooooo. Inquiring minds need to know, ya know LOL Love love love your video and can't wait for the May Garden Tour!! I hope all is well with you and your family.
I know! I really don't like doing that, im sorry! Just had to use what little dry time was left to get next weeks, weekday video filmed. Normally I'd do that a day or two before it's supposed to come out, but the forecast shows rain and storms for everyday next week.
awesome video jeff !!! oh, btw...you can consider the queen palm very special as they are getting sick down here and very hard to find. I just had 6 of them pulled out of our associations entrance because they were dying ... not sure what we are going to replace them with. ... Glad you could hear us screaming at the video to use that pot the way you did ....lol it looks great !!! since it's raining so much (down here too) can you do a fish tank update? Treats and belly rubs to TnT and bamboo hugs from your SoFla buds !!!!!
Thanks, Ryan! Fish tank update will be coming out in a vlog in a week or so. I have a new addition that I want to let settle in for a few weeks before showing it to everyone.
When you drop pots in the ground ( like the queen palm against the house) do you drill extra drainage holes in the bottom and sides of the pot? I've wanted to do something like that with my hibiscus and a few other plants that I overwinter indoors but I worry that the pot would retain too much water when we have torrential rains.
Depends on the plant and where I'm putting it. With the queen palm I didn't add any drainage because it's elevated in a burm which drains faster and bc there is a pipe under it, i couldn't bury it all the way, so it's elevated some. If it were ground level, then I would add a few more holes to the bottom and the lower portion of the sides.
Hey Jeff! Looking great out there! I was just wondering what are your average overnight temps? I wanted to start putting some tropicals outside but I'm scared with our current 50 degree nights in the north east U.S.
Thank you so much! Normally our average lows this time of year are around 65 to 75, but this year there has been no normal weather. I move many of my plants out when the lows are steadily around 50 to 55. Depends on the plants though, my bird of paradise i move out when temps will be above 40, but my monstera doesn't come out until about now when it won't drop below 65 or 70.
Hi there, I have a question I took my bird of paradise plant out to my deck under the shade it wasn't very windy while i did some gardening. Hours later went to check on it and to my horror some leaves drooped to the ground and the new leaf on my plant drooped so much it snapped. I had no choice but cut it out, will I still have a new leaf come out from that damaged stem in the future.... Any idea what I did wrong? We have 70 s in regards to the weather.
Hello! Has it not been out before, or been a long time since it was outside? Sometimes if I get moved out without some hardening off then the slightest breeze will weaken the stems. Mine have done it years past and always recovered. This year when I moved them outside I put them somewhere sheltered from the wind for a few weeks so I could adjust to it. It should put out new growth, they are pretty resilient plants.
I have had this plant for almost 2 months from Costco I took it out for the first time.... I think I'll keep her indoor from now on.... Lol it's a relief about the leaf I had to cut not hurting it's growth.... Thanks for the help
So the plant my family member was expecting showed up 6 days, 20ish hours after the seller put it in the mail where the tracking info said 2 day shipping... And of course it arrived about 10 min before a friend came to swim so I put it in a jug of water and then had no appropriate soil to plant it. Nor an acceptable pot. $20 later from lowes on friday...but I didn't plant it yet because we were expecting weather (didn't really happen - it did, but just not here, giant hailstone, F1 tornado, straight line winds...). And I need to drill my pot holes, and it's just hot and muggy out so I want to be inside... So last Saturday's storm gave us like 5.5" of rain in 24 hours, nice muddy pool to clean, soggy squishy grass to walk on. Only good thing about that much rain is it forces the fire ants to make new mounds so you can tell fresh from abandoned (cause let's face it...we probably have a ginormous mound under our property which probably has exits under various neighbors fence lines. No amount of fire ant killer seems to work.) So all our plumeria except the new one are finally outside. We didn't knock the flower stalk off the big boy surprisingly while moving him. I poured rubbing alcohol onto all their stem tips last night. I dont know what bug is on them, but I'm trying to be rid of it. Sprayed them with the hose today and sprayed with neem. Planted texas star hibiscus seeds the other week & some of the reds are sprouting. The whites are doing nothing. The dill & (oooold) catnip seeds I tried have all died on me. Not worried since catnip is a weed & I finally found a dill plant. Picked up (more) moss rose seeds to try out front, some cat grass seeds and a different variety of passionflower seed from what grew last year (boring flower for a passionflower plant). Pretty sure my one baby pitcher plant is dead. It never shot up new growth. The sundew is struggling. The venus flytrap I dont think has caught bugs, but it seems happy. Hanging pitcher plant I think enjoyed the rain last week. He came in for the severe threat though. Miss uti kitty broke her streak of no accidents after 9 days, and I think I'm seeing a pattern...if she has trouble moving solid waste, she leaks. But why is she having trouble moving waste...I really should take her for a checkup...except cars & vets are stressful and we dont want to trigger a uti. (I doubt we'd trigger one, but meds started in early feb for 20 days and look where we are...its the longest time so far between utis knock on wood...) Maybe I should drop the diary off at the vet & see what they think. 4 months of data might be able to tell them something. And when I weighed her, our unreliable scale says back up to 18lbs...well it said 17 one time & 18 twice. In a human that's negligible, but in a cat it's a huge difference. I suppose I should go drill my holes, and see if the cats want outside for a bit. No sign of the hawk recently, but its still supervised outside time for them because that hawk could be anywhere.
Shipping has been very unreliable amidst the pandemic, I had ine package tracking say a package had been delivered that didn't show up for 4 more days. Sounds like to did your best to keep the plant healthy though! Hopefully the alcohol works for the bugs, it usually does the trick. Sounds like we are having similar weather, except its been unseasonably cool up until today. Such a cat mom, i hope she's ok. I know what you mean about car rides being triggering so it's a double edged sword knowing what to do sometimes.
@@TropicalPlantParty we're expecting 30-70% coverage of north Texas for rain every day for the next 10 days. Spring in tornado alley. And since I cant focus to stitch today I just went and (re)potted 4 plants. My Little Warty succulent? was growing roots in a circle, so he got upgraded. New plumeria got potted, a string of bananas I'm trying to propagate got stuck in soil now that he has roots & I forget its name but purple & green leaves, supposed to be easy to propagate grew roots so I gave him some soil. New plumeria needs a saucer brought in as we're going to play in/out to let him establish (too much rain expected to just let him stay out). He's unique because he's a graft of 2 plants and instead of flower stems sticking up, he'll have them hanging down. Not sure if my sibling wants it to stay with me or go to their place...they kill plumeria & I only kill cuttings I make (40% fail rate?). I've never been a huge fan of online shopping & getting things shipped. I dislike using a card online, and then waiting for the item to come. Right now our chewy food for miss kitty I think is the only thing expected regularly. Speaking of which, I need to go encourage her to eat her dinner...she's clearly fed up with the prescription c/d food. Takes her 30+ min to grudgingly eat it. Fancy feast goes down in about 3 minutes.
OK, so last year I planted one bulb of Stars and Stripes Crinum Lily and it, finally, decided to put up a spike. But the flowers opened last night and now they're closed. Is that it? Open for one night and then they're done? Why weren't they open during the day? I didn't even get a picture of the open blooms. 😡 If that's all they're going to do, well, they're not staying. Something else can utilize that space.
I keep asking lame questions about snow and cold. I just watched your vid with it snowing. Now watching this your talking about transplanting those ferns? Are they native to your area and can take the cold? I didnt know ferns can do this?
Those three pots you arranged are stunning. I love what you ended up creating. You are so talented, Jeff.

Tropical appearance and can leave them out WAY longer than any of the smooth trunked palms. I think I'd grow pindo no matter where I lived, they're all short and chubby with fun fronds.
I'll try and remember to check the tag on those new guineas tomorrow and let you the name on instagram.
Those pots are beautiful!
Thank you!
I always identify with your methods ❤🤣❤
Well thank you!
Oh wow! That garden bed is going to look absolutely breathtaking when those ferns take off! Heck, it probably already does. Hard work pays off!
Not boring at all! That looks great! I love seeing before and after pics like this where you can see how things have grown in over the years.
Thank you! I agree, always best to play around and see what all of the options are before making it permanent.
Could you do a video on the roebellini? Why it curved and how to straighten it out?
Sure can!
@@TropicalPlantParty sweet looking forward to it! My pygmy is very similar looking.
Ohh i see no comments am i first lol 😆😆😆 great video as always and nice to see the doggos and othet pets ☺
Thank you!
What palms would you recommend to be hardy in zone 7? Love your videos! 🥰
🤣🤣🤣tap their roots, they throw a fit!!😂😂
They are such wimps! 😂🤣
@@TropicalPlantParty 🤣🤣😂
What is the pink plant behind the elephant ears? What zone are you in? Thanks :)
Hello, Carla! Those are Cordyline fruticosa, 'maria' and I'm in zone 6... all tropicals get moved indoors during the winter.
No amount of fire ant killer seems to work.)
So all our plumeria except the new one are finally outside.
I saw the buds on instagram. I've had crinums that behaved like that also and I gave them the boot!
I keep asking lame questions about snow and cold. I just watched your vid with it snowing. Now watching this your talking about transplanting those ferns? Are they native to your area and can take the cold? I didnt know ferns can do this?
Sharpening tools is my kryptonite. 😠
😂🤣 mine too!
Got me a new mini rose white one for a large empty pot i know i have bulb in it but they are fone dolooking for other stuff to put i pot
