OK....who else is shocked by the level of prefessionalism in this video?! I thought it was gonna be a home restoration but this lady just blown my mind!!! Never thought she would actually handpaint the wall!! So talented!!!
Painting was the first thing I thought of. After a long, tedious though vaguely interesting, and fruitless search of the internet for an exact match, of course.
"My aesthetic is that of a dead, old lady. I want guests to feel welcome, but I also want them wary." Ma'am, I have never had my own aesthetic summed up so succinctly without someone using the Addams Family as a starter. Yes to all of it!
I am genuinely impressed by all the effort that she has put through restoring the wallpaper. Like she hand painted the missing bits of the wallpaper and that is just so *chefs kiss*
"And while I want visitors to feel cared for and comfortable... I also hope they feel a bit wary and suspicious." THIS. Is the vibe I want for my house. 👻❤️ Love this lady so much!
When she said she wants her home to feel inviting but that her guests also feel wary and suspicious I FELT THAT. I keep telling people by design style will make people feel welcome but that they are also on THIN ICE.
The fact that she could've just painted the pattern, had it made and re-cover all the walls with new wallpaper but instead she chose to painstakingly match the colors, draw out the patterns, and paint every stroke shows how much she is committed to the historical beauty of the past.
@@jennifers8843 Nicole Rudolph has an excellent video about this and why arsenic wasn't just present in green- would highly recommend a watch if it's something you're interested in!
I thought the same thing, that I thought it had taken weeks of trial and error to color match all those shades! She has an incredible amount of patience. I have no real talent in art, so I'm continually amazed by the depth of her talent. Everything she makes is beautiful, and a work of art.
I went to school for textile design and i remember how painstaking color matching can be. i remember it could take half a day just to get one color right.
Mrs. McConnell, I have seen many women crafting, but you outshine them all in class, perfection and your attention to detail. It's fun to watch you, every step is understandable and has a calming effect on your own obsession. Thanks for that.
She said "I'm not an impressionist painter" and proceeded to replicate the amazing artwork. This is so gorgeous. Goodness I'm so glad you're settled into the new home and back to working those diy skills we all love so much!
50 years later: Okay Doug, the new owner wants us to take down all this wallpaper...wait this part is painted in...SOMEBODY HANDPAINTED THE PATTER BACK IN???
I bet if there are the previous owners, they’re very impressed that she’s restoring it in (sort of) their style. It’s pretty flattering that someone a hundred plus years later still thinks you had fashionable taste.
Lol right? Like the ghost be like "Ya know I was gonna scare em out. Like a whole A Haunting in Connecticut/Conjuring thing but damn she repainted half my wall paper by hand. She stays."
Christine: 'You can see that there are some missing/damaged pieces, so I'm going to -' Me: 'Take a high-quality photo of the wall and turn it into a pattern digitally, then have it reprinted on wallpaper-quality paper or textiles. Got it.' Christine: '-repaint it by hand. :)))' If it was anyone else I would have been worried.
Clicked so fast I almost gave myself whiplash... then swooned at the fact you wore opera gloves to strip the wallpaper like the true Queen that you are!!! WORTH the six-month wait!!!!

I actually gasped when I saw the original paper. Then to see your patience in mixing the colors , cutting out the forms and painting everything in is just stunning.
Ok but can I just say that original red wallpaper underneath this one made my heart DROP?! It was so bold and knowing how old it was spooked me for some reason.
Previous owners: oh no the wallpaper was ruined... *well we're just gonna have to cover everything then* Christine: oh no the wallpaper was ruined... *well I'm just gonna have to hand paint it then*
Do you ever just get overwhelmed with the amount of steps to do? Creating is a form of zen. Everything you do is so impressive and I feel I learn so much about what patience and “living in the moment” really means and can accomplish.
My thoughts exactly. I'd like to know how she gets in the zone & stays there. I do till I drop. I need to learn the slow & steady thing- festina lente!
So I'm new here and unaware of this lady's talents, which is all the more reason I was blown away. I've never felt quite so elated and crippled with anxiety at the same time. The second that paper came down and it was damaged with bits missing I was like 'Don't do it, Christine. It's not achievable. Manage your expectations. Realistic goals, please.' All throughout I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown thinking it wouldn't work out and then not only does she boss it, but she takes the ceiling from 0 to 100 with just a touch of paint! Lesson for today: Half of the battle is just telling yourself you can do it. Looking at something and seeing solutions rather than problems. She's been in my world for all of five minutes but now Christine is the person I aspire to be! 😍
Yep. My aesthetic could not be more different to Christine’s but I don’t think I have come across a more talented person that her. So good at so many different things!
I just cannot get over how much you and this house were meant to be together. Who else would treat this house with the love and respect you do, and put so much thought and time into it? It's just too perfect for you. I'm happy you found each other!
I occasionally watch this again just because I am so impressed with the detail and the work done to restore the old pattern on the wall. Such painstaking work and effort just amazes me every time I watch.
I definitely would have used tracing paper. I can't even conceive of doing the method she's going for. It takes incredible patience. The paint mixing - that I could do.
I truly think Dead old lady needs to be the name of your brand and you can create vintage inspired makeup and other vintage type things for us to buy 🤗

I honestly think this is one of the most amazing things I've seen. I'm open mouthed at the skill, perseverance and artistic ability of this woman. Incredible!
I'm a decorative painter. You did a great job! A suggestion in case you do something like this again. Trace the different elements onto clear plastic and make multi layer stencils.
She does an amazing job and it’s fascinating to watch a true artist at work. But for plebe like me that stencil idea is very well worth knowing Lololol. I’m moving into a house with beautiful wallpaper that has pieces missing so will be doing it the easiest way possible as I’m not at christines standard. Lololol.
Because the stenciled areas would not look the same. Plus, there’s no way with a stencil to get the variation in the roses cirrect or the shading in the leaves. I’ve done more than my fair share of stenciling.
Imagine 200 years later , someone just ripping off paint from this house and saying " i just discovered the part that was hand painted by Christine McConnell" 🤩🤩

Me and my husband bought a house that was built in the 1900s and was renovated. I was so sad that most of the historical trims and floors had been all removed, everything that basically said "It's a 100-year-old house" is pretty much gone beside the original house shape and design/layout. You give me inspiration in trying to reconcile its past with the present and find ways to bring back the look and elegance of it!

As someone who has a real love for antique wallpaper, I absolutely love the methods you used to restore and replace this wallpaper, and your mindset about replacing what was missing and embracing the age of it while still repairing where needed! I wish more people had this sort of mindset: restore but still make it your own, respect what is antique and already there but give it your own spin in places that are reversible, like simply painting the ceiling in a style that compliments both your tastes and the antique wallpaper. When she said she wants her home to feel inviting but that her guests also feel wary and suspicious I FELT THAT. I keep telling people by design style will make people feel welcome but that they are also on THIN ICE.
😂
Soooooo...the Addams Family aesthetic!😂
RIGHT omg it's a perfect way to describe alt home décor style.
The fact that she could've just painted the pattern, had it made and re-cover all the walls with new wallpaper but instead she chose to painstakingly match the colors, draw out the patterns, and paint every stroke shows how much she is committed to the historical beauty of the past.
You are a gift from a otherly place sent here to show us mere mortals how it's done . Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing!
Ya its super cool! Though given the age of the paper, it'll be full of arsenic. So I'm not sure I'd want to live with it.
@@mellie4174 I was thinking the same thing! But usually arsenic was in the green colored wallpapers I heard?

Christine: it took me 4 days

LOL, I thought "months" since she's been out for so long :D
i feel so inferior to Christine but I dont mind, She's incredible.
She's painting the ceiling AFTER the wall. The balls on this lady!
I was just thinking that!
This girls entire world is a canvas. I swear everything is a painting to her. It's just magnificent.
Thought the same...only hope that someday new owner appreciate such beautiful and old and historic wallpapers and TALENTET PAINING
And the next thing that would happen is probably Christines ghost come hurtling down on them for trying to destroy her beloved wallpaper.

This was so successfully realized on "Curious Creations", and I was hooked!
I almost wish there was a ghost living there so they could also be like, "Oh damn, she's really nailing the vibe."
She stays."
There IS a ghost living there...
It's HER.
ghost: "Beautiful work luv can i get you something ?"
Christine: 'You can see that there are some missing/damaged pieces, so I'm going to -'
Me: 'Take a high-quality photo of the wall and turn it into a pattern digitally, then have it reprinted on wallpaper-quality paper or textiles. Got it.'
Christine: '-repaint it by hand. :)))'
If it was anyone else I would have been worried.
Lol that was my go to plan. Or at least use them to create stencils
I kinda hope she does turn it into a digital pattern and sell it online for reviving bespoke wallpaper

This house couldn't be more fortunate than to welcome you and your loving care inside it's walls.
Realistic goals, please.'
All throughout I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown thinking it wouldn't work out and then not only does she boss it, but she takes the ceiling from 0 to 100 with just a touch of paint!
Lesson for today: Half of the battle is just telling yourself you can do it. Looking at something and seeing solutions rather than problems.
She's been in my world for all of five minutes but now Christine is the person I aspire to be! 😍

What a great idea! This would work amazingly if she had many areas that are the same. Right now she had only 3-ish areas? :)
