how do you know when the plant is to big for the pot ?

It kind of depends on a few factors. Some of my plants are in containers for display purposes for collecting. With that, I change out the soil every year in those and move up to a bigger size when the pot just looks too small for the agave, aesthetically speaking. But for plants in pots that are just in my collection for sales, I typically repot every two years or sooner if you squeeze the pot and it's too hard. That usually means that your plant is root-bound and the roots have outgrown the pot. Give them a squeeze from time to time and if it's hard as a rock, it's time to change pots. Good luck!
