Thank you for stopping by and welcome to my new channel where I explore my dry garden cultivars including agaves, cactus and other succulents. In today's episode, we remove a beautiful striated agave Americana and relocate it to a new location outside of the fence in the yard. We also removed some of the pups around the plant and we'll save those to pot for another video. I love working with these beautiful plants, I hope you enjoy the video!

Welcome to my new channel Agave Lovers!
That ‘part of the hand’ location device is so funny. Uniquely Michigan
I had thought that I shouldn’t water cacti/succulents that had roots broken off due to rot risk. Do you not have that problem watering newly transplanted agaves that have had their roots ripped off? By the way that ocotillo looks super gorgeous!!!
Thanks. I'm very careful about watering during the summer months with most dry garden cultivars but this being an Americana, it's extremely difficult to harm this plant. There were more intact roots than damaged so, I'm not that concerned with this particular agave as we head into winter. But in other episodes with other agaves, I'm much more selective with watering.
I love the front yard! Wish I had the same amount of space to display my agaves too
Nice Video. Job well done making such general processes seem very interesting and fun to watch.
You need a helper....im on my way!
Heck yeah man!
Will that grow indoor?
Wish those would grow in Michigan
thank you
I love Agave and cactus but live where it gets below 20 degrees on occassion. Can you mention which species or variety can handle colder temps?
I'm originally from Michigan so I completely understand cold temps! Unfortunately, I'm not an expert with Cold-Hardy agaves so I don't want to give you uninformed advice. With that, I still experience trial-and-error on a monthly basis even in my own yard so I'd suggest that you look up a couple and start small. If you decide to plant a couple, plant in the spring after the first frost to give them a really healthy start through the summer. Good luck!
I have a Guingola, but here in NZ it seems to do pretty well. Although I read that it likes a little shade and mine looks a little sun damaged. Not bad enough for me to shift it though. Thanks, and have a great day.
How come you didn’t use your Coa de Jima to shave the leaves off? Would have really liked to see that awesome tool in action!
Thanks. I used it on the blue flame extraction video but wanted to show another way to cut the leaves with this one. I figured more people have access to a hand saw than a COA.
What is weed control like in your climate?
Weeds start to accumulate in November and pretty much cover the landscaping by January. It's impossible to control it so I just manually weed when it gets out of control. By late spring, the hot temps help battle the rest of the weeds left until they're gone throughout summer.
That thing is huge. What is it's value?
Not enough! I used to sell these all the time but the market is saturated now. Do you guys want me to send a couple cold-hard agaves? I might have something that could potentially survive the winter.
Learned something today.
Steak knife leaves, 2 inch throat stabbing spikes and black widows...I think I'll just stay up here in Canada tyvm...
🤣😂🤣 🕷🕸🔪🩸
Nice relaxing stroll
Harvest looks amazing!!
Thank you kindly
The Agave collection outside is phenomenal but mentioning the rare plants in the greenhouse has me intrigued. I really hope you do a glasshouse tour video in the future. Great videos by the way I really enjoy them .
I certainly will give some greenhouse tours. I'm still trying to figure out the logistics as I'm getting ready to remove the summer shade cloth and install the winter covering. I'll likely start with that video and go from there. The lighting is better with the winter covering.
Very interesting! I like to see how all the different low water plants and trees can be put together to create a beautiful landscape.
It's not a critism, and it doesn't bother me okay, just an observation with regards to audio: when you speak it only plays through my right ear bud, and when the music plays at the end, I hear it through right and left.
Thank you! I just noticed that yesterday too. For my commercial work, I typically use headphones but for these videos, I usually use my speakers so I haven't noticed it until now. My camera is not recording in stereo so I'll have to edit the audio in post for future videos and will start using headphones again so that I remember to fix it. Thanks for your comment.
Fixed my problem with an update on my mic firmware, thanks again for letting me know!
Very cool harvest!!
Like your boots too!
I'm min love with all glaucus-blue plants. Looks great
Thank you!
I am in NSW Australia, with a zone very similar to yours. About four years ago I took a real interest in succulents and cactus and started experimenting with what is available here. I LOVE agave’s and mangave’s and am constantly searching for more knowledge. I look forward to watching your videos and learning new things along the way.
love the color combination. thanks for sharing & for the inspo
Thanks for stopping by!
Great video! I definitely needed this. Thanks for posting!!❤
Loved the video, and your helpers.
Very informative! I have a Butterfly Agave Potatorum blooming. How do you collect the seeds? Do you chop the stem and shake the seeds off? lol
Ooh that's a good one to have bloom. The agaves I've had so far have had large seeds and they don't come off the bloom stem until they're ready. Once you see that they start falling off to the ground, you can start to collect them and they'll pull off easily or shake off.
Awesome! Careful with your back x Do you sometimes trim the dry pieces of the agave leaves for aesthetics? It looks fabulous your garden is amazing. Love it when you water too!
Thank you! I do cut back dead leaves often especially on my special agaves. The blue flames grow so quickly that I don't keep up as often with cleaning them up.
I sure wish I could buy off your plant site. I'm in New Zealand. Your boys are great helpers!
You have some beautiful aguave yes I would love to buy some pups
Thank you. Awesome! The link to my Etsy plant shop is in the description or here: www.etsy.com/shop/PalaceofSpineArts I'll be adding more soon as most have sold out.
Great to see all your Agaves growing outside. That is just a pipe dream here in the UK .
Thanks. I follow a few people from the UK on Instagram and I was surprised to see their huge dry gardens with tons of agaves. There's another guy on Facebook who posts in a rock garden group who's in Chicago and his yard looks like mine! I've reached out to him asking how he does it as Chicago is buried in snow for half the year but he hasn't responded. I think you could plant Blue Flames and Agave Mitis (my next video) there without many problems. Maybe Attenuetta as well. I haven't looked too much into those climates but some would thrive including some mangaves I think.
Great video! watch the back!!!😊
Use large rocks
Check out my other videos and see the rocks in the front. I haven't gotten to this side of the property yet.
Has experimentado en tus agaves algunos gusanos gordos blancos que se comen la raíz y matan a los agaves ?
We don't get them up North where I live but I've seen them in gardens in SoCal.
Where is your garden shop?
It's in the description but I'll drop it here too. My rare stuff sells out quickly; I typically post on IG after I've added rare agaves and they go fast: www.etsy.com/shop/PalaceofSpineArts
I use my old soft bristle toothbrushes. I really don’t seem to have much of a mealy bug issue on my Agaves - but I do get infestations on lots of my other succulents .I have read that ants will actually physically move the pests around
Ants definitely do that. I've seen them carry mealy bugs from badly infected plants to neighboring plants that rarely attract pests
I've never seen mealy bugs, but it's good to know what to do if this happens. Dawn soap is good for a lot of pests, like white flies and aphids and probably other bugs as well.
What is the big plant behind you called
Agave Americana, one of if not the most common of the agaves in West and Southwest gardens. This one is the first agave that I planted.
2:09 I say it's all natural, isopropyl alcohol and Dawn dish soap is not natural but safe for the plants.
Have you ever thought to use coffee filters to screen drainage holes? I like to use them in my pots because by the time they decompose, they soil and inorganics have sort of situated as to not run out the drainage holes... Plus, they are inexpensive and easy to fit in any pot. I've been really loving pumice in my mix. It's nice because it keeps my pots nice and light.
Nice, thanks for the tip with the coffee filters, I'm going to try that!
when l move a golden barrel , l just cut all but about 3 inches of the roots and pit it on the porch in morning sun afternoon shade , wait about 8 days and work the soil where lm going to move it and make a litte dip in the soil and set it on top and in about 3 weeks its rooted in. l used to work in san diego and found out with cactus and succulents, roots are optional. Although l wouldn't try it with some tree aloes.😊😊
looks great! lm from south texas, my landscape is very much like yours. Maybe another golden barrel in front of the Americana, looks like a hole there. You have an absolutely gorgeous landscape.
Thank you for tuning in!
Plant some uncarinas !
Thanks but they didn't do well in this garden, it was too hot and dry in the summer and we get occasional frost here. I have some in the greenhouse though.
@@mr_agave I have 200 plus in Iowa. Outside in summer, basement storage in winter.Tallest is 8 ft tall. :-)
New subscriber here. Enjoyed your video. Incredible looking front yard. Where in California are you? What zone. I’m in Bay Area zone 9B and have had success with agaves and yuccas. I look forward to watching your other videos soon.
Thank you! Also 9B NorCal / Central Valley, about an hour east of the Bay Area
Nice! I need to move some plants around myself. Great layout!
Thank you!
Good job, great garden! 👍
I appreciate it, thanks!
Awesome plants! 🤩💚
thank you! 💚
Wow, it looks fabulous. I love agave too
I randomly stumbled in and enjoy your calming narration. And it looks like this is a new channel. Good luck with all your future content. Your agave are huge. Its a chore you easily able to tackle them! Your pup collection must be evergrowing.
Thanks, I appreciate you stopping in. Indeed, the channel is a little over a week old. This yard is certainly a chore, you're right. I didn't want a traditional lawn thinking a dry garden would be low maintenance. Boy was I wrong!. Blood, sweat and tears but it's fun - way better than mowing.
