Sadly this is where all things are going, I’ve even heard of some cars now charging monthly subscriptions for things. Thanks for watching man, really appreciate it
You can thank the democrats socialists and communists for this bullshit of ending the physical copies of movies and games thanks to the new world order and the deep state.
Going all digital would destroy the used gaming market. Gamestop would be out of business, and the game developers could lose prospective buyers by missing out on consumers who bought a used copy of an old version of a game and want to get the latest version. Being too reliant of digital media has pros and cons also, if game storage data gets lost or corrupted then you're out of luck. I'm team disc all the way.
@@FranchisePlayyer not to mention that and EV trend is driving higher electric rates, plus ISPs have brought back data caps to encourage you to pay more (either in a higher speed service plan or for removal of a data cap. And that's at a time when the economy hasn't recovered still and is still talked about going into a massive recession. And that's still influenced by Covid-19, Ukraine's war etc.
To be fair, Game Stop should have been out of business a decade ago, such a terrible company. The other things you said are all true though, and it sucks.
If physical ever truly ends then so will my interest in new videogames. I absolutely refuse to get anything digital, I want to actually own the product and not have to worry about it being taken away from me.
So many games have been delisted it’s tough knowing that a game might not be there in the future. The companies really have pushed people towards emulation
@@FranchisePlayyer that and just preserving old systems. I have a ps2 slim that I treat quite well and have a decent amount of games for it. I somehow managed to get sealed copies of Shin Megami Tensei digital demon saga 1 and 2, and a sealed copy of Mortal Kombat Armegeddon recently and they work great. But yeah I want the new Allen Wake that's coming out but might not get it at all because its exclusively digital. Even games that are on gamepass I get physically if I like them enough. Atomic Heart did that for me and I'm certainly getting the physical version of Starfield. I just want to be able to play all these forever, digital will see that being an impossible task so I will never support it.
Same here I buy only physical version game's I even bought another ps5 disc version because I really care about physical game's and my ownership. I play mostly offline without internet connection just to see how the game is without a update? Almost all ps4 and ps5 games work without a update right out of the case. Only few games require a connection or some game's that need it like cyberpunk or no man sky game's like that. However for no man sky they released that physical version like three times because of the updates and funny how they can do that but bigger organizations game company's can't that's something to think about? I like indie games and thier physical version games thier great. Just look at ubisoft this company sending a email about your account may be closing losing all your digital games lol we told you year's ago brother's and sister's now look? Now for emulation video games I don't know I would be very careful about that. Like look at that story about nintendo and dolphin.
I agree with you especially since I had some scary moments when I was locked out of my iPad 2 and I couldn't remember the password, and I was locked out the PS Vita digital until I connected it to the internet I'm worried about my PS3 digital games with the CMOS battery issue. I don't like digital only games because they can easily get lost in the digital landfill.
@@FranchisePlayyer order from playasia they have some cool library to combine through for new physical media. I just ordered the pixel remaster on switch
This is exactly it. Physical games are selling fine. Not seeing many games on the self at Target is a bad method of determining if physical games are selling. The fact is Covid brought about many big changes in consumer attitudes. Namely, people now buy their physical games via delivery of in store pickup.
No I stopped buying digital games when the ps3 launched and I could buy the digital game and could share it with my daughter on her PS3 then we could play against each other and only pay for one purchase. Unless your a collector digital is IMO way better. If you want to play an older game it's available somewhere online
Physical is always best due to the probability digital content can be lost in an instant if a company decides to remove it. I do buy some digitial content in general, but for games I always try to get physical.
You're seeing this with all forms of media. Music, Movies and Video Games. Music is the least concerning because you can find most songs you want for free online and they take up little space if you want to download and store digital music files. Movies in my opinion is equally as bad as games going digital. What if your favorite movie gets taken down from Netflix or Amazon or whatever, you can't watch it anymore and with the case of some of these newer streaming exclusive movies and TV shows they aren't getting physical releases so there's no way of finding them and watching them if they go away (for example Disney+ has already removed their Willow TV series which was only a few months old). Also we've already seen companies alter films that are now considered insensitive by removing scenes or making certain episodes unavailable. And with movies and modern games they take up a lot of space if you want to start downloading and storing backups. As you said we are entering an era where the companies control everything and the consumer has little to no say. It is really saddening. As for gaming I have a Switch and still buy a few games (always physical) but gave up on the other consoles once they weren't 'plug n play' anymore. It drove me nuts that I would buy a physical game and then have to wait for massive updates to install before I could play the game and I didn't have great internet at the time so it was really frustrating and difficult. It ruined the gaming experience for me.
Agreed buying physical switch games still makes sense, I also only buy physical switch as they are “plug and play” most of the time. movies getting removed from streaming services is such a pain
If consoles goes all digital then there is no point in buying a console anymore. PC suits both physical and digital markets depending how the user tailors it.
@@FranchisePlayyer Yeah ive not even caught up to the current gen yet. ive been collecting retros pretty faithfully since theyre steadily rising in price and i want to own as many classics as i can afford before they go ridiculous on the prices.
@@FranchisePlayyer just collected every nintendo console, and now collecting some games for ps1/ps2. latest purchases are Metal gear solid 1 and Final Fantasy 9.
@FranchisePlayyer I still play my og xbox and as with playstation classic mini with the games built into the system and then also planning to get a sega Genesis mini as with snes mini and a nes mini nothing those bastards companies can take away.
If the end comes for physical licensed video games for newer game consoles, I might turn to buying unlicensed bootleg game cartridges for my older game consoles in my collection from AliExpress going forward...
I will ALWAYS be a physical collector to the core and I support physical media whenever I can, but there's been one glaring flaw that has been hampering physical games in the modern age and that is the storage size. I'm not talking about hard drive space though. I'm talking about the disc and/or cartridge the game has to be put on to begin with. Lots of games have become HUGE, some close to 200gb. That is an absurdly large file size for a game. Consumer Blu-Ray discs for current consoles can store just 50gb of data and that's on a dual layer disc. There do exist triple and quadruple layer Blu-Ray discs that can store 100 and 128gb respectively but, currently, those are designed for specific re-writer drives for enterprise grade companies. Switch carts are worse for a different reason. Nintendo offers them at a maximum of 64gb which is larger than your standard Blu-Ray disc, but barely anyone who makes games uses them because they cost so much to produce. In theory, physical games could exist in larger physical mediums by going for physical board designs like the Switch, but no one is doing that because it costs too much to do. They would rather go the digital route and be lazy with game size optimization which is why these games are so large. This makes me sad...
@@FranchisePlayyer I collect for many different systems bold old and new. The oldest ones that I currently collect for are Sega Genesis and PC Engine Duo though one day I'd also like to add a ColecoVision to that list. My newest systems are a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One X though a Series X is in the pipeline. I'm waiting for Sony to release a PS5 slim version because the original one is so large and ugly lol. I also collect for a lot of portable systems. My favorite is the PSP for all of its hidden gems but I also love to collect for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color.
@@FranchisePlayyer Oh woops. I just realized you asked me what I "mainly" collect for. If I had to pick one console that I get the most physical games for it would probably be my PS4 but the PSP, Gameboy and my original Xbox are really close behind it.
Good call on waiting for a slim model ps5 the current model is pretty big. What games do you recommend for the genesis I’m wanting to explore the library some more?
Especially when Sony and Microsoft are updating system software with a virus bug stopping some physical games from working intentionally forcing users to buy digital games 😮
@@FranchisePlayyer it's true from my experience for over 2yrs..every system software updates is a malware bug..every time there's an update, some of my physical games won't install or can't be recognised..its too obvious..someone should put a lawsuit against Sony and Microsoft. My ps4 doesn't recognise disc anymore..now I only buy digital games.
It's weird seeing this footage in the stores. The Targets and Walmarts around me are always fully stocked to the brim with games and accessories. I live in the NYC area. With that said, we are certainly nearing the end of the physical as the main option era. It's a bit sad since I started gaming in the NES era, but, it's a sign of the times. First it was music to go primarily digital, then the movies, it was just a matter of time for games.
I think he makes some good points in this video, but is exaggerating the demise of physical games quite a bit. Even with stores like BestBuy and Target that don't have much on their shelves, you can buy nearly any physical game online for delivery or in store pickup. I know a manager at my local Target and he tells me physical games still sell just as well as they did a decade ago - it's just mainly via delivery or in store pickup. Even that shift has little to do with any movement towards digital, and a lot more to do with consumers buying preferences moving to delivery/in store pickup in the aftermath of Covid.
Yes, I've notice as I travel around the country and visit Walmart & Targets, each different location has different size stocks... from almost empty to full! Hear in Cleveland most places except for Walmart & Game Exchange, are pretty bare, or I already own most of their stock....😂 I remember when I was a kid in the late 70's you only had Sears & JC Pennys that use a small part of their toy department to sell Atari 2600 consoles & games, and Sears had their own brand of games to play on Atari 2600 consoles!!
game stores are already dying here in my country because everyone buys their games digitally. if they stop coming with physical releases im just simply not going to buy a new console. my switch , 3ds and ps5 ( tho i mostly play ps4 games with it ) have more games to last me a life time.
@@FranchisePlayyer i don't like to think , but i think next generation will be fully digital except for maybe the switch 2. Though Nintendo might eventually go digital too the generation after that.
I'm gonna keep buying physical unless they offer the physical deals i can get and the benefits to physical digital can't compete in that area outside of convenience they don't get many sales or deals
Yessir. I love me my physical games. Wouldn’t that be a bleak future? Streaming only systems becoming mainstream. I’m not down for that. I’m sure you already know, but Play Asia comes in clutch with physical games man. You should check them out if you haven’t. Screw Limited run games haha.
It will be a sad day when they stop releasing physical games man. I’ve heard great things about play Asia but I haven’t bought any games off there yet. Are the prices pretty decent?
@@FranchisePlayyer The prices are pretty decent man. Some of the limited edition games usually go for $35-$40 plus shipping and they usually come with a soundtrack and a couple of other things. US customers get free shipping if you spend over $100. A few of their exclusive releases are: Senses midnight, The Bridge curse, and Reverie. Those only have about 1000 copies each in case you’re interested!
The only games I buy digital are PC, mainly because physical PC doesn’t guarantee it’ll run on newer hardware, but Switch has kind of the best outlook for physical longevity as the carts don’t require moving parts. That being said, my local Walmart snd Target are fully stocked and has a good clearance section, seen quite a few folks buying games there,
There will probably be a gradual decline, but I don't see physical dying in the near future. People are increasingly realizing that these console companies simply shut down their stores for console over time, making it impossible to re-download or get support for their digital games in the future. Sony and Microsoft have both tried digital only consoles at a cheaper price, but I'm fairly sure consumers still favor the physical game consoles, even at a higher price. Nintendo hasn't released any digital only console model, and it seems unlikely they'll try it with their next console. I definitely think people are exaggerating the demise of physical video games. Looking at shelves at BestBuy or Target doesn't really tell you much. These companies still sell a large number of video games online or in store pickup. I buy a lot of games from those stores that aren't on the shelves.
So from what I’ve seen, your channel is awesome. So what I heard was from the balders gate makers. They said depending on digital sales…will determine weather or not they will make a physical for collectors. And from now on it will be like that. But my question is, what will happen if the main companies(Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft) make digital only consoles. These other companies make a physical yet we have nothing to play on. Collecting current gen is where it’s at right now. It’s the only way to find things and I have a feeling since 70% of people are now digital only. Less prints are being made compared to Mario 64 etc…
I completely agree that collecting current gen and even last gen are the only way to really find value right now. With less games being printed, I could actually see some ps4/ps5 games being extremely rare down the road especially if they get delisted like Godzilla on ps4 lol Appreciate the feedback my man and thanks for watching. If you are ever in Nor Cal hit me up there’s some good retro stores out here
@@FranchisePlayyer same with you, Gackt cognac came out last year from Vegas to visit me. I’m in south, high desert area. Boarderlands 3 on ps5(white label) goes for like 120/150 used. Sealed over 200
Love the video! The consumer actually have more power over the companies. The companies going to create this imaginary image that they do. They power only come from consumers that backs their practice of a digital only future. If consumers pulled together and stopped buying digital, then the companies will either return to physical media, or go out of business! I'm sure the latter isn't what they want to do! Consumers must unite on this, or these companies will continue with these HUGE profits (which is all they concerned about) without creating physical! #TeamPhysical
They've tricked the newer generation into thinking digital is the only way. Actually it's just a way to control and manipulate people into buying one thing almost being like a monopoly? We the people must fight back and show like you said to keep physical media alive!
Dude i hope playstation doesn't go digital cuz that when ima have to really consider quitting, unfortunately i don't want anything digital unless its tbe free shit from psn or sum game that was insanely cheap and i didnt care about it as a day 1 release...im still old school and like actually owning something not being leased something
I’m with you on being old school and wanting to own something instead of just a “license” to a game. I’m cool with the free games I get from ps plus too, but if your subscription expires you can’t play the games anymore which sucks. Thanks for watching dude!
I think even simply having digital games might even be a question at some point in time in the future as you have guys like Xbox who are really pushing gamepass. If companies get rid of physical games, who's to say they won't just stop selling digital games ether and just simply offer subscription models like Gamepass and Playstation Plus. Especially when we currently live in a time when it seems like everyone is trying to eat up someone else. It sucks seeing this happen to something that's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and if gaming does go this route, I will likely lose all interest in gaming going forward and stick with everything prior. These companies are destroying something so many of us love, imo and if physical games completely go away and at some point, subscription based gaming becomes the norm, I can't keep supporting. Great video as well. You made some great points like companies not wanting to see their games in a second hand market cause their not making profits, which baffles me if that's how they do think case if someone buys their game digitally thats it there not buying it again unless they somehow lose their account. Atleast with physical games you have the chance for some people to buy multiple copies of the game, orcof they buy it sell it then potentially buy it new again I feel like that's way more potential profit.
Yeah you made a great point, I definitely see the companies shifting towards a subscription survive like game pass. It makes sense as they would want to make as much residual income as possible and with doing this they will also take way the second hand market of games. Really appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching!
Physical media is not near the end. They are producing more movies and games then ever before? You have companies like Limited Run, Strictly Limited, Retrobit, etc still producing older titles and newer games on hardware. Was reading the other day Walmart is in talks with taking over DVD and Blu-ray disc so its going to be a while before all physical media is gone for good. Also never purchase digital because you truly never have it in your possession. Thats what these certain corrupt gaming developers/companies want you to believe thats its the future but it is most certainly not. They only want to control how and when you play and if they see fit delist it to never be played again. Show the nonbelievers that our physical is now more important today then it was back in the day!🙂
Everything will go digital at some point. There are a few reasons why physical will maybe last. One people just like buying them and if this happens some company might make a console and do it just because they want to. The second way is that maybe nextgen games will be so large downloading them will be a pain. So physical is just a way to move large data.
Yeah it’s only a matter of time until everything is digital. I think you’ll have companies like limited run games continue to produce some physical too
Knowing how the Steam Deck is and these PC handheld nintendo is probably looking at them for some ideas and would not surprise me if they make the same move because the company likes to make their consoles cheap.
Retro Game shops are the only places to buy games these days. Sure you can go to mainstream stores, but unless if you are focusing on current Gen consoles, you will find little else out there outside of EB Games and Retro Game stores.
Digtal-only games have been a common topic on youtube lately. I like digital more because I lose my physical games and the convenience of not waiting or going to the store to buy the game. Usually, when they delist a game, it is more than many years later when most have long forgotten about it.
That’s a good way to look at it. One pro of digital is being able to play the game right when it releases at midnight and not having to wait to pick it up in store or wait on a delivery
Its not even an issue of simply physical vs digital, its digital releases dominating, AND them having DRM or being apart of a subscription service AND physical copies being incomplete. There's been plenty of "physical" releases where the disc or cart doesn't have the whole, finished, fully functioning game on it. How can it be a "physical game" if it needs downloads/updates/patches to actually work and be complete? I think that in a way is the worse issue, because whilst everything going digital is bad for lack of ownership, you can't trust that the physical releases that we do get are going to be true physical copies of games.
I’ve been collecting from NES-Nintendo Switch era games for the past 15 years. Right now I prefer playing my Switch or PS2 to anything modern. Don’t have a PS5 yet because no game has really caught my attention and you can also get a ps4 version of a ps5 release. With PS5/Series X games pushing past 100 gigs per game, and the disc being merely an access key to play the game, I’m pretty sure physical will die in the next 10 years. I’m okay with this as every modern game feels like a cookie-cutter copy/paste version of what came before and modern games don’t grab my attention as those in the SNES, Ps2, Wii era. Right now is the perfect time to buy cheap PS4, XBONE, and even Switch games. I’m finding $1-3 Xbox one and ps4 games
Yeah right now is a great time to buy last gen games, I’ve been trying to scoop up a lot of ps4 titles for cheap. Almost everyone needs an external hdd with how large game files are now
If physical media "dies", I will only exclusively play retro. I do not accept the "you will own nothing and be happy" mantra. Im stubborn lol i still buy CDs and use MP3s.
Yearly sports titles I actually wished they went Digital Only that way i save space on my shelf, although full fledged AAA releases like the Sony Exclusives Physical all the way no questions asked. Spider man, God of war , Ghost of Tsushima Resident Evil series all deserve owning physical. Yearly games like COD should switch Digital Only
Yeah, I can see the people who like to collect stuff being very unhappy. No video games, no clothes and shoes, cars we will even borrow, or just ride a driverless trolley to work. Booo!
I don’t think we are a small audience of gamers. While we are not the majority anymore we are still %30 of the people who buy games yes 30% of gamers still buy games on disc. Also I think it was final fantasy XVI in the uk were 44% physical so it isn’t that smaller. I hope what I hear from Sony is they are making a ps5 with the detachable disc drive. They will probably have it that way so they can keep the 30% of the purchase but make a bit more profit. I think that is what they are planning. But I don’t think I will quit new games if we go all digital I will keep buying physical for as long as I can though.
I use to hate the idea of buying a game digitally at first, however over time PSN deals have lured me In on games I did t buy at launch like MK XL and MK11 both for $4.99 each. When I go say Walmart I don’t see them any lower than $15. Since then my digital library has Grown. I now own all the Assasins creed series on PS4 and PS5 100% digital. I don’t a single physical copy of that series. Got them all on great deals on PSN too by the way. All my PS3 games are 100% physical , during that time I prefered buying physical because the game was all on disc and very rarely did it require to download before playing. What I’m saying is I don’t mind the move to Digital in this era of games as long as I can download all my games I paid in the future even if delisted, say when the PS6 comes out I still have my digital library and I can redownload at will. I currently own 3 PS5 2 disc Drive ones and one Digital for the living room for convinience. The downside to that is some games I buy physical on release I wait for sale to buy for my Digital console, but That’s only with some games not all. Games with nostalgic memories like Resident Evil 4 Remake brings me back to the ps2 days so I need the Physical copy !!!!!! Alan Wake 2 I don’t mind buying digital
I say nostalgic memories cuz I was talking abt The OG RE 4 on the PS2, so I feel I needed the remake Physical, yearly sports games I don’t mind Digital Only I buy every FIFA yearly so it doesn’t matter at this point. Saves me space more convenient. My entire library in one spot. No need to get up and swap discs or disc scratching
Physical games are a thing of the past NOW. Think about it, every time i buy a game i out the disc in and pay close attention to what the ps5 is doing, most of the time the console will pull no more than 10 gb of the disc then the rest of the game around 40 to 80gb is download. So therefore the disc is only really a key like on the pc. And you have to use the disc every time you want to play games so sony can check you bought it legal. So you can see why people are digital download only theses days, no need to disc swap all the time. Also to note a bluray disc can hold a maximum of 50gb on a dual layer disc, so most games developers are not trying to fit whole game on disc anymore 😮 Sorry for the long comment. Great video by the way 👏
Yeah on ps5 the disc is basically a key like you said. It’s fun going back to older consoles and just putting the game in and it’s ready to play. Thanks for watching man!
@@FranchisePlayyer I could sell you one without a disk drive and one with a disk drive the one with a disc drive will cost more that's how I look at the business part of it
OK the biggest reason why I think so the only consul I really buy games for anymore is the Nintendo switch and every single time I get a physical game usually because of storage storage is so hard to manage on the Nintendo switch and I can fit like two games on a 16 GB SD card it’s so stupid
If a physical games dessapear then i will not buy them anymore I will start to pirate it everytime until they come to they senses and start making physical games again
That’s interesting, I’ve noticed some games will still get a ps4 release but won’t get an Xbox one release due to the lower player base, I wonder if it’s because of lower Xbox sales? How does the switch section look for you?
ONCE EVERYTHING IS STREAMING (WHICH IS PROVEN TO BE LOWER QUALITY) even if you download it on your ps5. I WILL PLAY OLD GAMES FOREVER. NEVER BE DIGITAL AND GET THEM TO KEEP OUR MONEY. I WANT TO BRING MOVIES AND GAMES TO FRIENDS HOUSES. DIGITAL IS ONLY MEANT FOR COMPANY PROFITS. IF I CANT TOUCH IT I DONT WANT IT. THEY BASICALLY RENT YOU THE GAME WITH LOWER QUALITY AND YOU PAY THE PRICE FOR BUYING IT!!!
Yeah I’ve never felt good about paying for the “license” to play a game. I’m assuming next generation will be fully digital and it will be interesting to see how that plays out. Thanks for watching dude
I got to say this, is physicals are dead, just like, what happened to Blu-rays and DVD did. In my country store The Warehouse, they don't sell Blu-rays & DVDs anymore. Everything is digital now. Even Anime. So I was right maybe, like I ask one of guy who work at The Warehouse about if Blu-rays & DVDs will die. And he maybe? Then on the news in my country said The Warehouse will no longer be selling Blu-rays and DVDs no more as all movies be on digital but that was couple years ago. So I think, the Physical games will be next just like VHS and Cassette tapes did. We live in a world now everything is changing fast. So I don't mind digital games, as I got no more room for Physical games in my draw at my home. I love Physicals too but we got to understand that we just can't keep the same thinngs forever, and we just got to get use to changes. Digital isn't that bad. If digital and physical games died when we all doomed. The future will be like no cars will be on road no more and cars will be flying next. And robots will take over the our jobs, and who's fault that is, us the humans. We all doomed the world to hell.
@FranchisePlayyer the good thing, though, with digital, if it rains outside. Then you just buy a game on digital right away. Order a game online takes a couple of days to get to your door. But if you got a car, then you're fine. But like me, i can't drive as I'm blind in one eye so I have to bus, that if the weather is fine though.
Yeah physical gaming might as well be dead. The selection is crap no matter what retailer I go to. Sure they stock the really popular stuff but that's about it. I just buy digital 90% of the time now
When ever i can i will always buy Physical games. Unless it's computer games then you pretty much have no choice. But Switch i always buy physical, same with Xbox. i dont want the game company to control the games i purchased, if they choose to take it down then i am SOL.
Same with me, I don’t own a single switch game digitally. My ps4 collection is mostly physical but I have bought some cheap digital games in the past. Thanks for watching!
It sucks that evolution is considered to be a good common thing about life, but now evolution is going to be a bad common thing. Another thing is that if physical video games are going digital, why isn't the price of games going down. Example Alan Wake 2 is $10 dollars more on consoles and $10 dollars cheaper on PC.
Those cards are for people that don't have a debt card or credit card. A lot of kids and teenagers might not have a checking or savings account. So its better just to buy a card for them. Or its like a gift card.
I'm not a big CC guy and I only use Discover which Nintendo, Sony (at least in the PS3/4 era idk about now) and GOG don't accept so I pretty much use these gift cards exclusively for digital purchases. I'm so in the habit of it I even use them for Steam which does accept my CC. The better question is why do so many brick & mortars stock these things when they make nothing off of them, unlike a prepaid debit card there is no activation fee, when you buy a $50 eshop card at the local CVS they aren't getting anything out of that transaction yet you can find these cards literally everywhere.
Push and advocate for DRM-Free digital instead then. It is still a form of *ownership* You are fighting a losing battle if the focus is only phyical media. The broader argument needs to be ownership.
@@FranchisePlayyer Yes, because that's a by product and logical conclusion of Capitalism. Everything is privatized to the rich 1% i.e. corporate publishers own the games, not gamers. Informing people of this is important, however discussing solutions alongside it is even more important other wise people will just feel defeated and dispondent if they only hear bad news. A solution is having more discussion and advocating of DRM-Free digital and physical media under the bigger banner of 'Ownership' - Which is easier for many to understand and get behind. like the GOG store - DRM free digital option for those who prefer digital. Explain to gamers that DRM-Free digital allows for gamers to have offline backups of their games They can play their games on any device that can play it as they see fit Does not require and rely on corporate servers and services for authentication does not have an 'end of life' like "live" service games Basically one owns their DRM-free digital game like they do physical - heck if they are technical enough make physical disc backs up of the game. Don't allow things like "IP" and "Copyright" confuse ownership. It's like owning a Blue Ray disc of Star Wars. The consumer owns the blu ray disc of the movie But they do not own the Star Wars intellectual property. Which is fine because consumers don't give a crap about owning the IP They want to own the media be it physical or software. Educating gamers of the terrible information is important but so is also discussing solutions and good examples encourages action and necessary change.
It’s weird hearing this as predominately an Xbox user. I’ve never had a problem finding physical games in my local area. Damn edit even further being called a casual is weird I own every system. I feel like you only own a switch and PlayStation. Because your perspective from an actual Xbox user is completely 180.
Not all Xbox gamers are “casual” some of my favorite collectors on UA-cam are team Xbox. My next video is actually based on the Xbox one, I think you’ll like it.
yeah digital is taken over. like when i go walmart theres not maney selecting of games now. not maney ppl buy games pysical no more. pysical will always be better because you own then forever. now ppl can buy there games from there own home without going no weres. it was fun when we had to leave the house to go buy a new video game. now today we just sit in our rooms and buy the game and download and play.
@@FranchisePlayyer wow lucky you. yeah back in the days in the snes and N64 and gamecube days my my walmart in my area had good games all the time. i rember in the gamecube days and ps2 and the 1st xbox days walmart use to have thos bins were they sell the games for 20 dollers and it would be for gamecube games they were players choice. and for ps2 greatest hits and the 1st xbox platinum hits. good times because they even had had triple A games in there. back when my super smash bros melee went missing and lugi mansion i had them since day 1 the gamecube releesed. and few years later my games got stoleing. and when i went walmart i seen super smash bros and lugi mansion in the bin payers choice. was super happy and buyed them both since they were 20 dollers each and thats 20 CAD.
We have small stores in my area (San Diego) that still sells retro games, hardware etc…their business is booming. Good luck to corporations going digital only. Guarantee they will lose sales. The niche hardcore gamer makes up small portion. I know people who only buy used or will pass on games if they can’t get it used
understandable points but what's the issue regarding it bc PC hasn't been a physical media thing in quite some time and people don't really bat an eye but bc its console it matters?
Yeah you’re right physical went away along time ago on PC. I’m not sure why console gamers are more attached to physical games, but there’s some pros to digital only especially Steam for example and the good sales that they have
I remember buying the physical copy of the original half life and blue shift but my originals got lost while moving house, fortunately for me I put the cd keys into steam when steam first was a thing and I still have those games available to me now because of it
The lastest triple A releases, SF 6, FF XVI, Diablo IV and F1 23, sold less than 20% as physical copies in the UK, and that market used to be huge for physical games. It's a sign that physical copies are dying much faster than we expected.
@@FranchisePlayyer maybe in US, Japan and other countries FF sold better on physical format, but still is a shocking stat, i mean, i'm not from the UK, but i think we are witnessing the last few years of physical media
“You will own nothing, and you will be happy” - tough times coming ahead guys : /
Great video man, keep it up 👍
Sadly this is where all things are going, I’ve even heard of some cars now charging monthly subscriptions for things. Thanks for watching man, really appreciate it
@@FranchisePlayyer For heated seats....😂😂
@@FranchisePlayyerwhen cars being Mande incomplete and all of the rest of the parts to be as an expansion pack or back then was called an add on
You can thank the democrats socialists and communists for this bullshit of ending the physical copies of movies and games thanks to the new world order and the deep state.
Yeah the data issue is huge too good point, if you didn’t backup your save files and your hdd gets corrupted then you are out of luck
There has to be a balance
Time to be a pirate
To me, I think it's important to have both physical AND digital games, so nothing gets permanently lost to time.
I own mostly physical but occasionally buy a digital game on the PlayStation store if it is a really good deal
And when that happens retro stuff will go up in value
Exactly we are already starting to see it
It's all moved to ordering a delivery. The stores have sucked for a while
Yeah the stores have really gone down hill
@@FranchisePlayyer order from playasia they have some cool library to combine through for new physical media. I just ordered the pixel remaster on switch
Dope I’ll have to check them out thanks man
This is exactly it. Physical games are selling fine. Not seeing many games on the self at Target is a bad method of determining if physical games are selling. The fact is Covid brought about many big changes in consumer attitudes. Namely, people now buy their physical games via delivery of in store pickup.
Dude stores in General are dying out people just shop online these days
Very true. If you don’t like having physical games then it isn’t a big deal
Do you still buy physical games?
No I stopped buying digital games when the ps3 launched and I could buy the digital game and could share it with my daughter on her PS3 then we could play against each other and only pay for one purchase. Unless your a collector digital is IMO way better. If you want to play an older game it's available somewhere online
I do physical games for life
Since I have bad internet connection. I only buy physical copies.
only for switch(some games). for my other gaming devices digital only
I remember being able to game share on ps3 with some friends that was cool
Physical is always best due to the probability digital content can be lost in an instant if a company decides to remove it. I do buy some digitial content in general, but for games I always try to get physical.
I always try to pickup physical too
You're seeing this with all forms of media.
Physical media is not dying out retail stores are dying out they rather have the consumers purchase online instead.
This might be part of the problem too
If consoles goes all digital then there is no point in buying a console anymore. PC suits both physical and digital markets depending how the user tailors it.
Yeah unless they somehow keep exclusives behind a streaming service
ive bought physical ever since ps1, and i still exclusively buy Physical games when i buy console games.
Same here! I only have one physical ps5 game so far though and that’s gran turismo
@@FranchisePlayyer Yeah ive not even caught up to the current gen yet. ive been collecting retros pretty faithfully since theyre steadily rising in price and i want to own as many classics as i can afford before they go ridiculous on the prices.
That’s a great idea you aren’t missing a whole lot tbh. What do you mainly collect for?
I don’t blame you, I feel like a lot of people will do the same
I will ALWAYS be a physical collector to the core and I support physical media whenever I can, but there's been one glaring flaw that has been hampering physical games in the modern age and that is the storage size.
Yeah it’s super sad but it seems unavoidable at this point. What systems do you mainly collect for?
Incorrect. Dual layer 4k blu ray discs hold 100 gb. GTA V physical for ps5 installs around 90gb right off the disc.
I reframe from buying digital. If physical ends so will my interest for video games. I have enough to keep me busy for a life time anyways.
I don’t blame you at all
Especially when Sony and Microsoft are updating system software with a virus bug stopping some physical games from working intentionally forcing users to buy digital games 😮
I haven’t heard of that happening
That’s cool to hear your local stores are stocked up with games, it seems like every target I hit up is just empty
Big cities retailers always went first to be stocked and then sending leftovers in other small towns
game stores are already dying here in my country because everyone buys their games digitally.
if they stop coming with physical releases im just simply not going to buy a new console. my switch , 3ds and ps5 ( tho i mostly play ps4 games with it ) have more games to last me a life time.
Yeah I feel you on that, I mainly play ps4 games on my ps5 too funny enough. When do you think they will stop making physical games?
@@FranchisePlayyer i don't like to think , but i think next generation will be fully digital except for maybe the switch 2. Though Nintendo might eventually go digital too the generation after that.
I'm gonna keep buying physical unless they offer the physical deals i can get and the benefits to physical digital can't compete in that area outside of convenience they don't get many sales or deals
Yeah digital really only wins in the saving space category for me lol
That being said, my local Walmart snd Target are fully stocked and has a good clearance section, seen quite a few folks buying games there,
That’s cool, my target doesn’t look to have a clearance section but the Walmart does
physical games all the way
100%
In the early 90s, the e music industry tried to destroy all record vinyls but failed.
With less games being printed, I could actually see some ps4/ps5 games being extremely rare down the road especially if they get delisted like Godzilla on ps4 lol
Appreciate the feedback my man and thanks for watching. If you are ever in Nor Cal hit me up there’s some good retro stores out here

True!
Thanks! Physical all the way
They've tricked the newer generation into thinking digital is the only way.
Most likely the next nintendo and playstation console will be all digital. Also GTA 6 could be digital only.
Sadly you are probably right
If they get rid of physical games they are gonna have to guarantee that games you buy digitally will be available forever
Completely agree
Physical media is not near the end. They are producing more movies and games then ever before? You have companies like Limited Run, Strictly Limited, Retrobit, etc still producing older titles and newer games on hardware. Was reading the other day Walmart is in talks with taking over DVD and Blu-ray disc so its going to be a while before all physical media is gone for good.
Also never purchase digital because you truly never have it in your possession. Thats what these certain corrupt gaming developers/companies want you to believe thats its the future but it is most certainly not. They only want to control how and when you play and if they see fit delist it to never be played again.
Show the nonbelievers that our physical is now more important today then it was back in the day!🙂
I hope it’s not near the end but we will see
If you support digital you CLEARLY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT GAMERS
👍👍
Yeah that would be pretty interesting
I can imagine limited run games will be the ones that still ship physical games just as the ps vita did well into its last year.
Yeah limited run and those other companies will probably keep it going for awhile
Retro Game shops are the only places to buy games these days.
Sure you can go to mainstream stores, but unless if you are focusing on current Gen consoles, you will find little else out there outside of EB Games and Retro Game stores.
Always nice to support the local retro stores, I have a couple good ones near me
Digtal-only games have been a common topic on youtube lately.
In the future retro collectors will have to search out used consoles with the correct games installed.. strange times ahead
Yeah or maybe even buy old accounts that have the game purchased on there
I went to gamestop and found crash team rumble didn't even know the game existed since I never saw it anywhere else but At Gamestop.
Good points
I don’t blame you at all. Physical media is amazing. I don’t collect dvds or vhs but I have tons of psp movies
If we all work together and continue to buy physical and not support digital
My best buy was like this but it was because apparently they were liquidating. Next time i went, the store was gone! I buy physical.
Wow I had no idea that some Best Buy’s were closing down
Yearly sports titles I actually wished they went Digital Only that way i save space on my shelf, although full fledged AAA releases like the Sony Exclusives Physical all the way no questions asked. Spider man, God of war , Ghost of Tsushima Resident Evil series all deserve owning physical. Yearly games like COD should switch Digital Only
This would definitely make sense man. I’m at the point where I only buy 2k digitally but the rest of my games are still physical
I started buying physical again recently so sad and bad to see it slowly being killed
Yeah, I can see the people who like to collect stuff being very unhappy. No video games, no clothes and shoes, cars we will even borrow, or just ride a driverless trolley to work. Booo!
Yeah collectors are not looking forward to all digital
I don’t think we are a small audience of gamers. While we are not the majority anymore we are still %30 of the people who buy games yes 30% of gamers still buy games on disc. Also I think it was final fantasy XVI in the uk were 44% physical so it isn’t that smaller. I hope what I hear from Sony is they are making a ps5 with the detachable disc drive. They will probably have it that way so they can keep the 30% of the purchase but make a bit more profit. I think that is what they are planning. But I don’t think I will quit new games if we go all digital I will keep buying physical for as long as I can though.
Yeah I’ll keep buying physical as long as I can too, I wouldn’t mind the detachable disc drive
I love collecting for ps3 for that exact reason, you can just pop the game in and play. I miss those days!
Also to note a bluray disc can hold a maximum of 50gb on a dual layer disc, so most games developers are not trying to fit whole game on disc anymore 😮
Sorry for the long comment. Great video by the way 👏
Yeah on ps5 the disc is basically a key like you said. It’s fun going back to older consoles and just putting the game in and it’s ready to play. Thanks for watching man!
They will always do physical copies but it does cut resale value and also there's more money in 2 consoles
Let’s hope physical stays around
@@FranchisePlayyer I could sell you one without a disk drive and one with a disk drive the one with a disc drive will cost more that's how I look at the business part of it
OK the biggest reason why I think so the only consul I really buy games for anymore is the Nintendo switch and every single time I get a physical game usually because of storage storage is so hard to manage on the Nintendo switch and I can fit like two games on a 16 GB SD card it’s so stupid
Game files seem to be getting larger and larger I feel you
If a physical games dessapear then i will not buy them anymore I will start to pirate it everytime until they come to they senses and start making physical games again
I think a lot of people will probably do the same
Might have to do with my area, but the playstation section has 3 times the games out on the shelf than the xbox section
Yeah times change, it’s tough to see especially if you grew up with physical media
At this point I’d rather buy that flash drive that has all of those classic retro games
Ifphysical dies there will be no point in console gaming. Double down on pc
If the companies release exclusives on pc this will definitely happen
@FranchisePlayyer playstation is porting everything over to PC never been a better time to be a PC player. Nintendo the only holdout
Yeah physical gaming might as well be dead. The selection is crap no matter what retailer I go to. Sure they stock the really popular stuff but that's about it. I just buy digital 90% of the time now
Don’t blame you at all
When ever i can i will always buy Physical games.
Digital games should definitely be cheaper than physical
Alan wake 2.... Only available digitally smh! This new way to only buy digital sucks!
Yeah when they said the new Alan Wake was going to be digital only it was a bummer. I’m sure other new releases will do the same
Those cards are for people that don't have a debt card or credit card. A lot of kids and teenagers might not have a checking or savings account. So its better just to buy a card for them. Or its like a gift card.
Good point I didn’t even think of that
I'm not a big CC guy and I only use Discover which Nintendo, Sony (at least in the PS3/4 era idk about now) and GOG don't accept so I pretty much use these gift cards exclusively for digital purchases.
Late '90s is not pre-internet. Ever heard of Napster?
Not as widespread in the 90s that’s for sure. But yeah never used it
Push and advocate for DRM-Free digital instead then. It is still a form of *ownership*
You are fighting a losing battle if the focus is only phyical media. The broader argument needs to be ownership.
Ownership in general is becoming an issue unfortunately. Housing to name a big one and everything is now a paid streaming service
Explain to gamers that DRM-Free digital allows for gamers to have offline backups of their games
They can play their games on any device that can play it as they see fit
Does not require and rely on corporate servers and services for authentication
does not have an 'end of life' like "live" service games
Basically one owns their DRM-free digital game like they do physical - heck if they are technical enough make physical disc backs up of the game.
Don't allow things like "IP" and "Copyright" confuse ownership.
It's like owning a Blue Ray disc of Star Wars.
The consumer owns the blu ray disc of the movie
But they do not own the Star Wars intellectual property.
Which is fine because consumers don't give a crap about owning the IP
They want to own the media be it physical or software.
Surprisingly my Walmart actually has a decent amount of games
Great memories finding games in the bins that’s for sure! Melee is my favorite smash
Fo you think alan wake 2 will release a physical copy
I could see limited run games or one of those companies maybe releasing a physical later on
We have small stores in my area (San Diego) that still sells retro games, hardware etc…their business is booming.
Good luck to corporations going digital only. Guarantee they will lose sales. The niche hardcore gamer makes up small portion.
I know people who only buy used or will pass on games if they can’t get it used
Yeah retro stores seem to be killing it everywhere. I have a couple retro stores near me that are doing numbers
I only buy physical games and movies
Do you buy blu-Ray or dvd?
understandable points but what's the issue regarding it bc PC hasn't been a physical media thing in quite some time and people don't really bat an eye but bc its console it matters?
Yeah you’re right physical went away along time ago on PC. I’m not sure why console gamers are more attached to physical games, but there’s some pros to digital only especially Steam for example and the good sales that they have
I remember buying the physical copy of the original half life and blue shift but my originals got lost while moving house, fortunately for me I put the cd keys into steam when steam first was a thing and I still have those games available to me now because of it
Wow that’s pretty cool. You basically have your OG copy still
Physical supremacy!
Yes sir!
I buy my games on ebay
Movies also
👍
The lastest triple A releases, SF 6, FF XVI, Diablo IV and F1 23, sold less than 20% as physical copies in the UK, and that market used to be huge for physical games.
It's a sign that physical copies are dying much faster than we expected.
Wow that is an insane stat. I’m most surprised by FF XVI selling that low on physical to be honest
@@FranchisePlayyer maybe in US, Japan and other countries FF sold better on physical format, but still is a shocking stat,
i mean, i'm not from the UK, but i think we are witnessing the last few years of physical media
Yeah it looks like a lot of games are now opting for digital only releases too. Enjoying physical while we still can lol
O will that life bye bye buying games I play movie more the playing games I like wrestling games in Old games like pacman Ninja turtles in Sonic
This is better
Thanks Ali!
@@FranchisePlayyer 🤙
I only use my PS5 Disc tray to play Blu Ray movies i never buy physical games
That’s a good idea I haven’t watched a Blu Ray on my ps5 yet
Don’t buy digital
You don’t buy any digital?
I will buy digital now
After what ubisoft is doing, I'll keep things physical. When physical dies in gaming. So will my interests. 🫠
I think a lot of people will lose interest when physical dies out
Good .. can't stand looking at my wall of games... Plastic cds and carts everywhere.
😂😂
@@FranchisePlayyer want em?. It's all just taking up space.
I’ll pass man thank you though!
Ninte do will always make physcial games
Yeah I think Nintendo will keep making physical for awhile
Who cares lol
Not everyone cares about physical games so I feel you
