  • As I arrived at the beach I noticed it was busier than normal, with people casting over and over and sets of 6 feathers flying everywhere.
    Someone must have said mackerel!
With sunny weather and clear water it was almost tempting to try myself
    but I abstained.
Trying to find a spot whilst carrying all the fishing gear plus the dogs gear looked like it was going to be challenging but luckily the two fisherwomen in front of me started to pack down so after asking if I could jump in their spot and getting a quick catch report "just loads of dogfish" I set up without too much walking.
I used a vercelli enygma furia 16ft continental style rod to fish at long distance and a Daiwa supercast 13ft to scratch around with.
2 up 1 down clipped down flattie rig on the Vercelli
and a 1/0 2 flapper on the Daiwa both loaded with black lug I had pumped the day before.
within a few minutes a nice bite producing a 31 1/2 cm dover sole which I was very happy to catch one of these actually in dover!
Then attack of the dogfish for hours with the odd pout or whiting thrown in I switched to a 3/0 pulley pennal with squid and herring wrap as bait and cast out!
I started to gut my sole with the thought of packing up on my mind as constantly pulling multiple dogfish off my rigs had worn me down.
But then the Vercelli rod bends over and line starts to be taken definitely grabbing my attention!
A couple seconds later the camera is on and the line is still going at a nice steady swimming speed!
As soon as I lift the rod I knew I was into something large and powerful
after a great fight I see the creature surface 30 ft out looks like a thornie to me, but as I struggle it to the shore line it becomes clear this isn't a thornback.
Turned out to be a Blonde ray weighing in at 13lb 5 oz
    Happy days
after some filming and pictures it was time to take my shoes and socks off and take a dip to release this beautiful creature!
with one more cast and one more dogfish I called it a night a happy man!

Thank you Stephen, yeah Mr Bandit is a top fishing boy! 😁 He's even outfished us on some lure sessions snatching himself whitebait, mackerel and dogfish out of the shallows!

It can be unfortunately, I've seen anglers lose all their tackle every cast down there, but there are about four or five clear channels along the beach just don't go to far down or you run the risk of being cut-off!

Very good and informative video 👍
How about a shorty on using a disgorger properly. You make it look so easy but many of us are not….

Good video , you must fish pretty heavy though , even the double figure ray was winched in within a minute or so with not much of a fight , what strength mainline was you using

Nice one mate. I use 18 or 20lb mainline with a tapered shock leader. Some just come in easier than others

Is that why they are called dogfish? Sorry - couldn't resist it...

Gotta get them in when ya can lol, my dog gets a little excited when I pull up a dogfish but quickly losses interest when he figures out its a dogfish, where as bass and Big rays make him lose his s#!% until its either released or we go home 😆
