  • Hello and welcome to part two of building and extending the layout into the great outdoors.
In the video i show the track laying and installing electrics.
We also have a grand opening gala. Running lots of different locos and trains, it was an enjoyable couple of days playing trains with the children. Who were the train drivers for the duration.
We operated it so that locos changed trains at the end of the line, the loco of the previous train then took out the following train and so on. This led to double heading of the last service and also some light loco moves.
Part 3, where we extend the garden railway into its destination will follow in the spring.

It's great fun building and running an outside railway isn't it? I broke all the rules building my outside layout. I cheekily used PECO track pins and didn't run wires to each rail length but made sure the fishplates were tight and put Vassalene in the joints to keep out moisture. The track has been used extensively for at least 12 years with little trouble. After a number of years a few droppers have been added where the voltage was dropping. When the occasional fishplate stops conducting I squirt WD40 into the join and move the fishplate a little with a screwdriver which restores conductivity. You can see my railway by clicking on the logo.

Your out door bit would look good as a trestle bridge section

Hi. Great video, thanks for sharing. The bus bar info really helpful. You mention cutting the fish plates for expansion. With my garden railway I kept the plates in place as they help to keep the joint in line Without them I found that the joints can go slightly out of line. I usually have to replace the odd fishplate about every five years approx. Your bus bar method with intact fish plates and expansion gaps would possibly be the best sollution. Good luck with completing the loop next year.

Not sure 6ft will be enough for expansion joints. In the loft it got a bit over 30 n single bits of flexi track were too long n buckled, had to cut them n add fishplates. You may be ok though, hopefully.
I was using code 75 n your code 100 might be happier.
    Looks good progress either way.

Hi Ian. No i don’t cover the track. It seems pretty weather proof. I am slightly worried about the heat we have coming this week though
