@@trafalgarlaw8373 It means that it is not figuratively in my list of top moments. You know how people will say, "This so-and-so is my favorite!" but then later that day something else will be their favorite? Well, that person meant that thing is "figuratively" their favorite. Let's use a more appropriate analogy; "This is easily in my top 10 anime", someone might say while never actually making a list of their top ten anime. If they used "literally" in that instance, it wouldn't be correct.
The song Ukai sung at the beginning is called Aobajo Koiuta 青葉城恋唄. This song is about Miyagi Prefecture, where this story is set. It was a hit song in 1978, so it's kind of funny to hear someone young singing it. This is a scene that shows his love for his hometown.
This is my favorite episode. This is where I got hooked into Haikyuu. I love EVERYTHING about this episode, from the music, the VA, how everything in the plot fits together with coach Ukai and Asahi, that final shot with Asahi that almost looks like he is shaking his tears away. My two favorite things are Nishinoya practicing "block-follow" because he feels responsible and he felt he had to improve on that one thing to get Asahi back. The argument between Asahi and Noya takes place in what could be the darkest place of the gym, for what could be the "darkest" moment they had as a team. And like I said, the music, THE MUSIC is its own character this episode: 16:54 it is mute, and as they patch things up it starts again, and ramps up to the SAVE, and then it goes glorious to the last spike, it is a masterpiece. I remember I binged the whole season 1 after this episode in the same day. I just could not stop.
the composer for haikyuu soundtracks is a genius, love how the music gets you so invested in the scenes that you can't even noticed, and we not even close to the real hype yet, love the reactions :)
Yuki Hayashi is an absolute gem of a composer. He’s created some of the most positively emotion driven OST’s I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to in anime. Even more so through his work in My Hero as well.
There are two composers. Hayashi and Tachibana Asami. The latter seems to always get forgotten about due to Hayashi just being more famous, but I am sure her contribution to the soundtrack is just as crucial as Hayashi's is.
Coach's "ukai'' means "raise a crows.'' It can also be translated as "feeding the crows." (lol) School sports in Japan include tournaments, and many students strive every day to win. A wonderful time when people grow the most physically and mentally. It's youth.
Takeda is the volleyball club adviser, each club has a teacher that is responsible for it, not necesarely because they know of the club subject, but because they need an adult to make it official and organise things, like training camp and practice matches. Takeda is also the coach on paper, it's a matter of legality, not because he does anything like a normal coach 15:48 that's why Suga said they could fix the broom and still use it, there is actually a really short extra scene of them fixing it 16:47 he was making a ruckus that he was warn not to, desrespected the vice principal, pushed him and broke school property, taking into account that respect is very important in Japan, you add everything and of course he will get in some truble 21:40 I feel that something that this story does well is make you believe that it's real by making the other characters have a lot of history, it truly feels like the second and third years have a bond and it's not that the team was created because we are following Hinata (I don't know how to explain it, there are some shows that feel that didn't start ubtil ep 1 but this feels we are only getting a started story) 25:08 just a quick nit pick, Noya did receive a looot of the blocks, some watching the match were prasing him, but it's imposible to return every single block, especially if they were block all the time 40:39 you can always read the manga😜 I literally cried in every chapter that wasn't animated (which were 100+ at the time), if I had read it before watching I probably would have cried in even more
That broken stick represents the relationship between Nishinoya and Asahi. Suga didn't want to throw away that broken stick because he believed that these two would come back to this club someday.
Hi, as a japanese fan, let me explain japanese high school sports situation (in general) Actually, the seriousness vary and depends on each school. Some school clubs are easy going and students play just for fun (e.g. practice 2-3 times/week). On the other hand, there are some schools called powerhouse. They takd it way more seriously like practice 7 days/w morning and afternoon, hire professional coach, trainer and even nutritionist. If you serious about it, you want to go a powerhouse school. Also, these schools recruit outstanding players from nationwide. Another thing (it may not related much to haikyuu tho) that school sports is consdered a popular entertainment in Japan. Major national tornaments are commercialized, which have some controversies.
Nishinoya is everything a teammate should be. Dude is the greatest. Suga and Daichi too of course, and a certain other captain we won't meet for a very, very long time.
Japan and America doesnt have that ”outside school club culture” as we do in Europe. The school teams mean more and are more inportant over there. I know in europe the private/outside school teams are more important but for usa school team is were you compete more.
Imo what truly sets a story apart is its ability to immerse us deeply in the characters' inner worlds-their thoughts, emotions, etc. For me, the magic of storytelling lies in "showing" rather than "telling." When a story vividly depicts what characters are experiencing, it becomes not just enjoyable but also quite impactful. Most importantly it also enables our connection with characters. Like the scene when a ball stays suspended in the air for 3-4 minutes (which obviously is funny), and we get to see what's going on inside everyone's head. Over time, both mangakas and animation studios have honed this technique, focusing on revealing the rich inner lives of characters rather than merely narrating their actions. A prime example is Hunter x Hunter, where narration was heavily used in CA, perhaps out of respect for the source material, because manga itself is heavily narrated. And it was perhaps difficult to convery everything through visuals alone. Many adore that narration bit of hxh however for me personally, it was a bit annoying. That experience of narration was very similar to a documentary on discovery or national geographic channel for me. Apart from that CA was perfect. In recent times i think Deadpool has done amazing job with narration. (Well of course in conjunction with breaking the fourth wall and talking with audience.) However, in 2024, both authors and animators generally shy away from this approach of utilizing narration. "Show, don't tell" has become accepted principle in writing. In modern novels ( in literary fiction), narration has been largely abandoned for decades-it's rare to find a book where the author directly explains what's happening inside a character's mind. This technique of slowing down time to delve into characters' thoughts and emotions has gradually become a standard of anime. haikyuu, demon slayer, vinland saga, AoT many animes have utilized slowing down of time to explore inner world of characters so well.
The more of this show you watch, the more I realize how much you'd both love My Hero Academia, so I'll keep my hopes up! Yuki Hayashi also does his incredible music for both series!

Asahi yelling, "SUGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" is literally one of my top haikyuu moments.
It’s top tier. I feel the same way as the first time I saw it. Literal peak
What is "literally" supposed to mean here?
