  • Romford, Essex.
Various shots of guitars being made at a factory in Romford. Good C/Us of craftsmen at work and of the guitars taking shape. Narrator says that guitar making is enjoying a boom in Britain because of the "Beat Groups". The guitars are electric guitars and a dozen different craftsmen will work on each one - "all this to make a bedlam of adolescent noise" says the narrator. He makes a gag about how expensive the guitars are, leaving musicians with no money to have a haircut.
Some of the guitars are sprayed bright red and hung up to dry. Guitars are strung. They are "Burns" guitars. Man tests the sound quality of a guitar with special equipment. Narrator quips: "Surprising when you consider the noise they make that each and every guitar is scientifically tuned just as if they were REAL musical instruments!" The guitars are then burnished to a high gloss - lovely!
David Michael from the Unit Four Plus Two takes one of the guitars and strums it - cue for a song, see next record for "Unit Four Plus Two".
Cuts exist - see other records.

The video is about making electric guitars, so of course, being British, the music played on the film has to be saxophone music. Somehow that makes perfect sense if you're british.

If it was said of kid's guitars that are often made so poorly that the kids can't get a good foothold in playing (I mean ones aimed towards 3 to 10 year olds,) then it applies. But here? I expect they're much higher in quality than that. I've never played a Burns Guitar, though.

OK, so I looked up the Burns London models that are shown in this video. As of September - October 2022, They go for $1,800 - $2,000, going by 2 recent eBay sales. I also saw an outlier at about $850 shipped. The point is, these aren't cheap trash. The narrator doesn't come across kindly, I'll say that much. I'm not quite sure what he was thinking.

@@robertraymond9107 A _bedlam_ of adolescent noise, mind. In other words, "a screeching cacophony like the Bedlam Insane Asylum." ... I think the cutting criticism was about 10 years too early to call it that.

At-least they had a dress code. I met Jim Burns in the early 80's , happiest Man I ever met. He did a Leo Fender and sold his baby and to Las Vegas and had a blast..pink Cadillac and all that. Hank Marvin and the Shadows used his gear(as you all know), thsnks for posting this gem.

All this to make " a bedlam of adolescent noise" at a time when British groups were topping every Singles and Long Playing music chart in almost every country in the world. No wonder Pathe News folded. :-)

"By jove," imagine their horror when The Sex Pistols showed up. The Beatles and other similar groups looked friendly by comparison, no doubt. Well, perhaps except for the song "Helter Skelter."
Insulting your customer base and possibly undermining their faith in their abilities, how "jolly well" that'll end? Though, perhaps the comment was a pessimistic one about anyone who's only just starting at guitar; they will not sound "very good" at the very beginning, even with a professionally adjusted and easy to play instrument that has thin (low tension) strings on it. Beginners won't know chord shapes, or songs, or even how to hold a guitar neck so their hand won't cramp up.

That bit at 1:09 where the painter _touched the guitar "after painting"_ is a *BIG* "no." I see the paint had already cured, but it was meant to look as though he just painted it. And why is there no holding stick? Normally, you have a temporary stick screwed to the neck pocket so you may hold a guitar while painting, then you hang it by the stick.

As if they were real musical instruments 😂😂. I've never understood the 'long hair' thing of the 60s. If that was long hair, what would they have called the 70s?

My Dad told me that it was "long hair" compared to what people were used to. Up to that point (well, at least for decades beforehand,) men did *not* frequently have hair as long as The Beatles.

I don't think that Burns polished their guitars after fitting all the parts, strings etc. Nor do i believe that the craftsmen wore suits or lab coats. Pathé- tic little film.

“Just in case they were real musical instruments” 😂 @ the disrespect
Honestly though, in hindsight I’m sort of with them, as I get older I like the electric guitar less and less, that’s not to say I don’t enjoy some (I adore the Kinks for example) but by large I don’t care for the instrument.
Guitars in all forms will always be inferior to Gods true instrument; the banjo. 🪕🪕🪕👍
