- This ain't your typical coastal town -- you won't find tourist shops, crowded beaches, etc. But you will find salt, sun and deep history in this laidback beachside city. If you want a day on the bay, this is exactly where you need to be.
This 1300-acre park managed by the LCRA is a refreshing mix f coast, wetlands and prairielands. And it’s also where the Colorado River crashes into the Gulf of Mexico - a sight any Texan needs to take in.
The Matagorda Marsh is a great place to kayak, because it’s somehow both peaceful and challenging. The waters in the dozens of paddling routes are undisturbed by motorized boats, making it a relaxing float, however, maneuvering around the grassy banks throughout keeps it an adventure.
In the middle of Palacios’s sleepy downtown is a place where history comes alive. Explore exhibits on the Karankawa Indians, the Camp Hulen military training base in Palacios in the 1930s, and even artifacts from the 1684 La Belle shipwreck. And when you’re done at the museum, sail the ocean blue in the La Petit Belle, a half-sized fully working vessel.
The Luther Hotel was built in 1903, and is still accommodating weary travels with historic hospitality and incredible views of the bay.
To get truly blessed, head to Blessing, TX for the massive Blessing Hotel Buffet that’s been run by Miss Helen for over 50 years. Devour dish after dish of homecookin’, like fried chicken, greens, and chicken and dumplings! In the words of Miss Helen, if you go away hungry from this buffet, that’s on you!
Texas is a big ol’ melting pot of flavors and it’s time to dive in! Get to The Point for Vietnamese food made with fresh seafood from the gulf. It’s mouthwatering, and I guarantee you’ve never tried egg rolls like theirs before. When you’re done eating, owners Bryan and Yen Tran can help you find bait to catch your own whopper in the gulf, because this is also the town’s grocery store and bait shop.

My mother was raised there and is now buried there, with my father next to her. My mom told me how hard it was during the depression there and how Camp Hulen changed everything for a period of time. I have lots of family buried there besides my parents. Great history and great salute to a small town that no one knows about. THANK YOU! Very weak done!
My mom was raised there too! My great-grandparents, grandparents, and numerous relatives are buried there. Gerhard, Eloge + more
@@socadream DITTO! My mom and dad and grandmother, great-grandparents, uncles, aunts all buried there. Jackson, Margerum, Crittenden, Blake +
@@wabitt11 I’ll bet they knew each other…and went to the same one room schoolhouse, which is now the Duestchberg (?) community center…cemetery next to it. Granny’s farm was/is on Star route, now Kubecka rd (family also)… Sells, Stuart, Mutchler+. Small world…here I am in So. California…lots of memories for me in Palacious.
Spent most of my childhood here and never thought anyone would ever make a video on this, thank you!!
Myself and some friends would go fishing here in the 80s.
It’s nicer now than it was then.
❤❤ I love the serenity there. I used to live there. It is peaceful and fun to fish there. Uncle Brian and Aunt Yen is my mom cousins btw. ❤
Dang never thought I would stumble on a video about my town 😂
Here we are. I hope I did it right.
Thanks for the trip! We vacation in Indianola, about an hour south west from Palacios. I've never been to paladins, so thanks for taking us there! Keep tripping my friend!
Can’t image the stories Miss Helen has to share after running her restaurant for 50 years! Yan’s fish sauce: on the list.
Palacios and Matagorda are special places. Surfed and fished Matagorda for 40 years. I need get back there it’s been a year since I was there. A lot of good memories surfing and fishing east and west bays.
I live in Palacios and I love it❤
I visit every chance I can.
Nice 👍
In the 1970s, dad would buy two kinds of shrimp straight from the shrimp boats at the docks: couple of pounds of small shrimp for fishing and the large ones for frying. Yum!
THIS IS SO COOL! I live in Matagorda, have all my life, and i used to work in Palacios for Transport Boats as a mechanic. Its really cool to see my small town get a little spotlight
So glad you included Blessing. My grandparents lived there on an oil lease and I had great memories of living there during the summer while they were there. My big daddy monitored the oil tanks and pumps until he had cancer and had to move back to Beaumont where he passed away. He would take me with him to hunt squirrels. I was his spotter and would follow the squirrels in the trees until he could shoot them. The Blessing Hotel is unique and the food is great. Locals and workers eat there.
Cool childhood stories. Amazing that Hotel Blessing has been around for generations
@@TheDaytripperI live in Port Neches. My dad was born and raised there. My grandchildren graduated from PNG.
@@rebeccadees2300 I'm PNG class of 99
@@TheDaytripper I graduated in 1970 from West Orange High School. I have cousins who graduated from PNG in the early seventies. My grandchildren graduated in 2011 and 2014. They’ve torn down several elementary schools and have built new ones. Unfortunately a few of them aren’t completely finished in time for new school year. The affected teachers are having a difficult time getting their classrooms ready in time for school to start. Woodcrest and Ridgewood elementaries are the newest ones.
I’m a Palacios!! I still need to go visit this town!!
you should have shown the Texas Baptist encampment in palacios, it has been a summer camp for kids for many years
😄 in spanish its Palacios 😄. Thank you for coming to Palacios, I live in Victoria but I loved seeing that you were so close 😉👍. Love your channel ❤
Thank you. Stay tuned for our Victoria episode.
@@TheDaytripper oh awesome 🤸♀️🤸♀️🤸♀️😄
At the place you went to (THE POINT) in Palacios,TX.,Yen Tran call it Shrimp Wrap. Sometime other Vietnamese,Chinese & Thai Restaurant here in TX. called them "Fire Cracker Shrimp" (same method using-"Eggroll Wrapper & whole shrimp, deveined, with no head and leave tail on)
9:17 love that sign. Hey what a great episode man!
Headed down to Palacious next month for a Barnett reunion! Have never been and can't wait. Our gr-grandparents lived there and are buried at Matagorda.
My family had a bay house at El Campo Club so we went to Polacios quite often. Word of caution about the catfish; their fins have barbs loaded with poison and they hurt like crazy if they fin you.
Grandma and grandpa had a place at Tres Palacios gated community. Grandpa built the fishing hood with his own hands
Great video, I love fishing there.
Great episode!
🤠
Love Palacios👍🤠
I like looking at the shrimp boat in the harbor. Yes I have eaten at that buffet. At least no skunk.
Enjoyed the show
Just moved to El Campo, which is about 30 minutes away. I went fishing there and had a little luck. Very nice place.
Next time try some food at PMR, we eat there often. Very good.
Never been there. Need to try it.
My birthplace.
Matagorda bay has some of the best fishing of all the gulf coast. People go down there to get away…
YES, I AGREE
Something that should have been necessary to include in your video is that The Blessing Buffet accepts cash or checks only! She doesn't accept debit, credit or Zelle or anything else! Another not so fun fact is that the bank directly in front of the hotel does NOT have an ATM machine! If it weren't for a kind gentleman blessing me in Blessing, TX with a $20 all because he liked my supportive Trump t-shirt I was wearing, I would have been in a bit of a pickle!
Shanghai Pierce. No, it IS PA-LA-SEE-OOS not PA-LA-SHAS.
My dads side of the family is from palacios and blessing.
Come to Sargent! Right up the road from Palacious
Eagle pass Tx, crystal city tx, Carrizo tx uvalde Tx , concan Tx
All good spots.
ha i live near there. the next town over, matagorda and i work at the matagorda by nature park lol
I have to make time and visit the Point and Blessing hotel
Just found put that this family owned restaurant at the Point sold. Now it is comfort food. So sad they were so nice and knowledgeable. Had good food. I hear the new owners food is not that good.
This is such sad news. I loved them. If you want great Asian cuisine. Try Tran's.
I was just at the point
Where you at captain Charlie?
SPALACIOS & THE HORTEL
Gringo mispronouncing a Spanish word and saying "yes, that's the way you say it." Palacios is Palaces in Spanish.
that river is not fresh right there bud. you shouldn't lie... also should have included how the government ruined the fishing pier in matagorda.
Because the fishermen can’t sell from the docks?
No, it IS PA-LA-SEE-OOS not PA-LA-SHAS
Not to the folks who live there.
So the folks that live in Palacios don’t know the proper spanish pronounciation.
@@steely_Bob Place names often stray from original, correct pronunciation. Other examples: Los Angeles, New Mexico, Baton Rouge, Miami, etc.
@@steely_Bob It's Spanish, not spanish.
