the french soldier yells "rends-toi" at the beginning. Meaning he asks him to surrender and didn't want to kill him, it makes the scene even more tragic...

Paul isn’t french so in ww1 that might had happened a few times
shouldve shouted it in german and he wouldnt have gotten stabbed maybe, but yeah, shos the tragedy of war, the german kid didnt even know what he was saying, just that he was aiming a rifle at him, then he saw an opportunity to eliminate the threat to save himself.
adding a little detail to this. it seems like he says "non" just before being stabbed. truly frightening details of this movie
Watching someone suffocate on their own blood, and knowing you're the reason they're suffering is unimaginable.
I would imagine it's worse to die slowly, far from your family, choking on your own blood, while the guy who did it sits there feeling sorry for himself.

Not quite as up close and personal as in this video, but what really fucked with my head was when it was over and we searched the dead, turns out he wasn't quite that dead.
Instant PTSD trigger. It didn't cause the issues all by themselves, but that was the moment my mental health went "Bye, we're off, good luck without".
My issues were spotted the same day and I was voluntold to go see psych support who tried to keep it together the rest of the deployment and afterwards put me back together again.
Here's the thing: These guys didn't get psych support.
The whole concept of our mental state wasn't really known to exist at the time and the first attempts at psychology were laughably primitive.

@@youngstay2989 neither side made any long term progress. they may have advanced, but were then pushed back. All of these advances and retreats resulted in hundreds of deaths, often in horrific ways.

that's actually what the title refers to, a got a bit lost in translation I think, the German is 'im westen nichts neues' which means in the west nothing new. because you would read about the war- big battle there, big event there- and at the end it just gets a sentence, 'oh yeah and in the west nothing new'. THIS is what was happening, but it's not worth mentioning because there is no progress, the suffering isn't worth caring about, the front isn't moving. Nothing new, it happened, it's happening, it will continue to happen.
@@youngstay2989 the western front was a major area of battle between the allies France and Britain and Germany. it ran from the North Sea coastline to the Swiss border and passing through (at various times) Belgium, north-eastern France and southern Germany. The idea of a frontline is that you are trying to gain territory by pushing back the other side, and defend the territory you have. so if the line 'moves' that's because territory is being gained by one power and lost by the other. if the line isn't moving, its a bit of a stalemate because neither side is gaining ground, you want to push your enemy back, not stay static. So what Kyloluma is pointing out is that so many lives were lost on the western front and it was basically for nothing because the front only moved a little.
the two halves of Paul's face in this scene feels pretty symbolic. One side is his own face, the other is caked in mud/unrecognizable almost like a monster. One side is his humanity and empathy, the other side is a killer fighting to stay alive, altered by the horrors of war
Really good observation. As humans, we are so easily made monsters through bad luck and bad experiences. Makes you wonder what we actually are at face value

@@user-eh5ig5wp6l well during back then with black and white movies with the early early days there was no sound but once sound was added the actors kinda fell out of favor because they had the sound now and they could speak and it was kinda his last movie (idk if he stared in more) but it's vary erry where it's no sound but the young boy suffering and pleading
When you realize you killed a guy you didn't hate.
I read this book in 10th grade at the age of 16. This scene impacted me so profoundly at that time; I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks. The sheer horror of watching a man die, a baker with a wife and child, who offered you surrender to spare your life….and you were the one who killed him. Stabbed to death in a muddy hole in a blasted land, a soul forever extinguished.
The scene has never left me, and it’s equally profound these 13 years later seeing it enacted in such visceral detail. I’m stricken by it all over again.

That's one of the horrors of war unfortunately. Despite the fact that they were told to kill each other, there is still some kind of humanity left in these soldiers. The realization that their combatant too has a family, and has their own life story. It's so bittersweet

Finally a movie that depicts the true reality of war. Not like the other COD-like Hollywood war movies out there. These were all men with families and friends who died painful deaths in a pointless war. And its so sad knowing this is a reality not just a hundred years ago, but also today in places such as Ukraine. A very unfortunate part of human nature

Watched this film yesterday. How was he not? I love Fraser and I’m glad for him but give a nomination to Kammerer, at the very least.

I cried to this movie made me cry so much and I even had emotions of anger and sadness and sometimes it can even impact you even though it’s a movie that’s how powerful war movies are.

My great-grandfather was a Poilu (French infantryman) who fought during the Second Battle of La Marne in 1918. He was shot four times while trying to rescue a wounded comrade from no man's land: shoulder, both legs, and torso. Though he was assumed dead, somehow, he survived. He recalled waves of men, French and Germans both, running around him as he lapsed into and out of consciousness. At one point, he remembered that a German soldier fed him some rations. In that moment, they were just men, separated by arbitrary circumstances and forced to fight over...nothing. This scene was especially difficult to watch because I think of both my great-grandfather and the German who showed him such a basic act of human kindness. They deserved better. I hope that, like my great-grandfather, that unknown German soldier was able to survive the war and find some semblance of peace.

The fact that this is Flex’s (Paul’s actor) first movie role is insane. He did such a great job.

Horror/Violent Movies make deaths so unrealistic. When you stab someone, it’s not like the knife goes in and out quickly. In reality when you stab somebody it might go in quick but pulling out takes some force, also in movies where people get shot in abdomen and just fall to the ground as if they died instantly is not the case either unless you’re shot through the heart, it takes time to bleed out, also you ever notice in some movies or tv shows that someone will shoot someone else in the head and then walk up to them and shoot them again in the head? That’s because people have survived head shots, ( maybe not fully recover but recover enough to speak or blink when asked questions. ) that second head shot is insurance shot just to be sure they’re dead, also could mean not only to make sure they’re dead but if the killer has any compassion at all the second shot would also be a mercy shot bc who would want to be alive after being shot In the head?
It's good to see a world war film from the German perspective. I think since they were the 'bad side' it's easy to forget that a majority of their soldiers were just like those of the allies, young men or even teenagers victimised by fat politicians. be you French, German, or British, most do not want to kill and are forced to in these moments of desperation, stripped of their humanity.

Whenever I hear alot of patriotic crap about my military, how it's manly to join and "serve your country" and how you get to "see the world, become a better person, secure college and employment!"
I watch this movie. This is what war is. This is what Militaries are invented to do. They aren't masculine charity organizations, and eventually, if your in a combat position, this will be your fate. Horror, death, crawling in shit because the big men on both sides told you all to fight.
That's war. And simultaneously a reason to honor combat vets, while also spitting on the suits and politicians that think that THIS is an acceptable way to conduct politics.

I can't imagine the horror, the guilt and the sadness that one would have truly felt in a moment like that. You can almost feel the Lord's sadness and disappointment with this world.

My dad was in the military for a very long time he was mainly stationed in the Middle Eastern countries dealing with terrorist organizations. Out of all the horrors he saw there he said listening to someone choking on their own blood was one of the worst things he has ever heard and that is a sound you will never forget.
This scene made me cry how Paul regretted stabbing him and how he tried to save him in the end but realized there was no hope. Seeing the soldier die in pain and cry and then Paul cry and heave when he saw the photo of the French soldiers daughter and wife I broke inside 😢😢

That’s how Paul felt, he couldn’t stand the sound of the soldier gurgling and dying so slowly. That why Paul stuffed the dirt in the guys mouth, he was trying to shut him up because Paul was so rattled by that point he couldn’t stand the sound of it, but then he started to come back to what was left of his humanity and remembered that the French soldier was just another kid like him who didn’t want to be their either and he felt bad for not only dooming him to bleed out slowly, but stuffing his mouth full of dirt

0:38 this shot here highlights the ambiguity of the two sides two soldiers. The only difference visually is their uniform and gear and helmets but the colors and main details are obscured by dirt ash mud and powder, highlighting how theyre all the same
There is a massive difference between being shot to death, and being stabbed to death. Not only is it incredivly... _intimate_ for lack of a better word, you can be sure it was more painful than any gunshot they could have sustained.

This part made me cry. I can’t even imagine how it feels to sit there watching the man you stabbed gargle and asphyxiate on his own blood, seeing the look of defeat in his eyes, knowing that he’s human just like you, and finding pictures and letters from his family in his pocket. Paul realizes what he did and that he can’t take it back. Absolutely heartbreaking. No wonder men are different when they return home from war.
In this masterpiece of a film this scene got stuck in my mind. The enemy soldier's slow and painful death made him realize the horror of his action, the brutal reality of war. In the way the film was made it seem to be a anti-war-film. At first the young men were so enthusiastic about going to the front and fight for their home country. For victory. But they felt no joy or pride after.
This is why I don’t want to join the military because I know it won’t make a difference unless the old men in the suits decide to
More experience = More chance of surviving. That's why you should get the experience now and enroll before a war happens because conscripts only get about 2 days training and aren't expected to survive.

I would like to mention this isn't his first up close kill.for he had killed multiple men senselessy in close quarters combat prior. This is to depict how the how the flow of war and action and just pure adrenaline made him inhuman
The best scene of this great movie. It hit me hard. Very impactful. It contrasts how young men are traumatized by having to murder another human being for the sake of their own survival while the commanders are safe and warm in their headquarters. This scene made me shed a tear as it was lived in reality by hundreds of thousands who physically survived war but were permanently wounded in their minds. Great delivery from both actors.

And then it cuts to the scene of the generals fine dining and stuffing their bellies with warm plates. It's such a constrast to two men on the battlefield, fighting for their lives and being forced to kill one another. It's sad and theres nothing good about killing another person, even if you have to.

In every other war movie the protagonist will be glad to kill the enemy, but here you can see that Paul is crying because he killed someone who have a family like him and try to get rid of the blood to forget what he did and the french soldier look at him like "I understand you're feelings" instead of look at him like a Monster. And Paul instead of end his suffer he try to help him but sadly the french soldier died.
100% my favourite war movie.. the beginning showing paul and his classmates and friends cheering to be able to serve their country.. then the first day one of them was blown to pieces while paul must collect his friends dog tag.. slowly you see a young boy turn into a shell of his former self, turned sour by the horross of war, the constant death all around.. the ending of this movie wrecked me

my god just saw this movie for the first time 2 nights ago, unbelievable movie... This movie for me personally is the saddest movie I have ever seen, there has never been another movie that has came close to the emotional feelings I felt while watching this BRIULLIANT movie. BRILLIANT acting by this young Austrian actor (a stage actor starring in his FIRST movie role) the scenes depicting Paul when he becomes saddened at different points in this film, (specifically the scene when he first discovers the brutally graphic dead body of his Friend Ludwig and the emotion he shows, and ESPECIALLY THIS SCENE right here, im not ashamed to admit this, I barely can keep myself from crying everytime I watch this part of the movie, just the amazing acting by this young actor portraying Paul and the look he has on his face at various points as the full gravity of the fact he has just killed this soldier who is dying from an extremely agonizing death and suffering greatly.. Its the scene when Paul pulls his hankerchief out of his jacket pocket and submerges it into the clearly polluted and disgusting and diseased Pool of water at the base of this Artillery shell crater they are both in and brings it over to the dying french soldier and when he holds it over the dying soldiers mouth and starts squeezing it so that water drips down into this dying soldiers mouth, dude the look on the face of the dying soldier and the way he opens his mouth to try and drink this little bit of water so desperately as a futile attempt to probably ease his suffering by a little, and then when Paul pulls back out the same knife he had just used to stab this soldier and seal his fate and death shortly before, the sound this dying soldier makes thinking that Paul is about to stab him again and finish him off and Paul instead says "no no Comrade Comrade" as in its okay, and he is instead using the knife to cut the buttons from the soliders uniform jacket to try and access his Chest wounds and ease the soldiers agonizing suffering death, Man I cannot help but want to cry man goddamn... BRILLIANT MOVIE BRILLIANT DIRECTOR BRILLIANT ACTORS (Paul, "Kat", Tjarden, AND this dying french soldier too) AND BRILLIANT COMPOSER FOR THE MUSIC IN THIS FILM

I haven't seen the remake yet, but I have seen the original. Exemplary work of art. This scene in the 1930 film gave me a cold, eerie feeling at the moment the he gives the dying enemy a drink of water, and then after taking a drink, he just ever so gradually stops moving and freezes in place in such a way that made me unsure of when exactly he died. It depicted dying as not being just one singular moment where the body's switch gets flicked off instantaneously, but a process in which the essence of the soldier's life slowly drained from his body like a wine bladder with a leak in it. The way his body simply went stiff while sitting up in that awkward position, somewhat cross-eyed and biting down on his lip, which left his final expression as an unattractive, unflattering look. And his final experience on this Earth, as he cried, probably thinking about his parents, was to sit there helplessly listening to the insane ramblings of the person who killed him. Young men left the world like that, probably looking even worse in real life in a lot of cases. The fact that neither of the young men had personally wronged the other prior to their fight to the death makes this ugly death seem like such an undignified desecration of life that even the survivor is not guilty for because he had no say in the matter; he simply did what he had to do to make it out alive. It's a dirty business killing and dying just to protect the economic interests of a government that doesn’t give the first shit about you, your dreams, or your life.
This is what combat brings to people when they don't understand what could happen to them.... When you think that brining your hatred to your enemy can be justified? The enemy can do the same to you. When you die there is no glory after because you are dead and will become food for the rats and maggots after. Wars are no good, but when you force the other side to fight you. Be prepared for the consequences...

Well Paul died in a similar way, yet so close to the war's end.
The fact that his (Felix Kammerers) face is so muddy, you can barely tell who he is anymore. And the fact Paul goes mad afyer hearing the frenchmen choking was awful
This turned from an anti war movie to a psychodrama
The soldier peobably wouldnt feel the stabs because he was littelary exploded when he fell off and he maybe went numb
This scene was ghe first too make me actually cry a little because they didn't wanted too fight. But there leader made them
Paul would die in similar fashion. No point of war
